The Coast Guard Cutter Spar holding station in the middle of the Canal and setting out on their assignment following the Coast Guard ceremony for those lost in Lake Superior. If you’re interested in seeing the actual ceremony, that is in this video here, which I recorded for those who might have wanted to see it but couldn’t: Honoring Those Who Have Died in Lake Superior

But it also provided a very unique opportunity to see Spar and her operations up close and personal in a way that few people ever see! Built in 1999 and 224ft long by 46ft wide and a crew of 48, the Juniper Class Cutter Spar is Lake Superior’s main Coast Guard vessel. She mainly serves as a buoy tender and ice breaker, but can be used for rescue missions (although the smaller boats are much faster and better equipped for rapid response) and law enforcement / border patrol (not too much of an issue on Lake Superior) as well. She was long stationed in Kodiak, Alaska and serviced the Aleutian Islands and Bering Sea for much of her career. In 2008 the ship rescued the fishing vessel Equinox after it was damaged in a storm. In 2012 she was one of many vessels that responded to the floating oil platform Kulluk breaking loose in a strong storm off the Alaskan coast, and drifted ashore. In 2013 she participated in the testing of a new oil collection device. Then in 2017 she attempted to rescue the fishing vessel Lady Gudney which was adrift in heavy seas. The operation went sideways after one of the rescue lines got caught in the Spar’s propeller and disabled the cutter as well. Both ships ultimately had to be rescued by heavy tugs a few days later. In 2021 she was removed from Alaskan service and sailed to Baltimore, where she was refitted. She arrived in Duluth in 2022, replacing her sister ship Alder as Lake Superior’s coast guard vessel, which was removed for refitting and ultimately took over the Spar’s former role in Alaska.
Following the ceremony the ship departed with a deck and holds full of buoys, which she has been dropping along Lake Superior’s south shore, particularly around the Keenaw Peninsula to ensure safe navigation.
There are also some short cameos by the laker Paul R Tregurtha, harbor tug Edward H, and a Coast Guard fast rescue boat
