Glass shrinks a little when it cools. By putting a hot glass into cold water, you are forcing it to shrink faster on the surface than inside the walls of the tumbler. Essentially the glass is cracking to relieve the stress created by that shrinkage. To sum it up: hot glass, cold water= broken glass.

Back when I was just a kid we would cut bottles like that to make funnels. Just tie a string where you want to cut the bottle, soak the string with lighter fluid or gas and light it. Once hot, dip it in cold water, like in the video. Instant funnel and a glass if you emery paper the edge a little.

I have purchased some diamond files for jewelry making, for mostly smoothing out inside if hand made porcelain type beads, these work great for smooth chips in glass stemware and other chips of plates etc. They would probably work gtlreat for smoothing edges that are sharp after cutting, I'm sure if it, u would use slow movwnts as smoothing edges and then carefully check with your finger tips around edge, in my opinion of course.
