This trick has really helped with my pup who is now 2 and a half & still needs work when in distracted settings. The natural way she comes back when playing fetch in an enclosed area is slowly going to make me more comfortable in other settings. I'm trying to work with her strengths & cues so that I'm reinforcing her natural way of being

I have a really confident little Patterjack, I had a rehome dog before her, a really insecure little dog, she'd come back because of her fear of being left so she was no problem on recall. This one is different, nothing she likes better than hide and seek, at 16 months she is really really well behaved for her breed. Recall is so hit and miss, this is due mainly to her high prey drive (working line dog) so I have to keep her on a long lead and have just ordered a tracking collar. This guy is right it takes months of training, I have had no problems training puppies or older dogs, but this one has a strong will and it's been difficult and it's definately the recall thing. She's not treat motivated and I dont want her to miss out on a good doggy life. I live on the South Coast of England with some pretty wild countryside surroundings, so plenty of temptations (rabbits etc) around. She likes the beach but I'm so worried she'll run off, she likes ball games etc, but gets bored/distracted easily. Anyone got any hints of tips to my problem, we have a shared garden which the landlord has not fenced off very well, so the garden is a no no. This dog needs to learn it's important to listen to recall, otherwise she's a very well behaved dog.

All dogs learn in the same ways--regardless of breed. Training a chihuahua is very similar (yet very different) from training a Great Dane. The difference is in your position when dealing with the dog. With a Great Dane, you're likely standing up while with a Chihuahua you may be sitting on the floor (or doing a whole lot of bending. With learning loose leash walking with a mini-dog (like a Chihuahua), you'll be doing a lot of bending that you're not doing with a larger dog. When bending, you need to watch your body position so you're not "looming" over the dog and terrifying the dog. The training is pretty much the same. What differs is the trainer's body position. Care must be taken with smaller dogs not to bend directly over them. But Zak's example here of starting to teach the dog to come can be done with any breed. If it were me and I was training a chihuahua, I'd be sitting on the floor. If I was training a Great Dane, I'd probably be standing (unless I was dealing with a very fearful dog in which case I might be sitting in a chair). Same exercise, my body is just in a different position.
