If you are vacationing in Riga, Latvia, and are looking for a real thrill the Olympic Bobsleigh track in Sigulda may be a perfect place for you to visit!
Olympic bobsleigh is an extreme and exciting sport to try but is not suitable for everybody.
In this video, I will share with you some useful tips and actual footage of a bobsleigh ride, so you see it for yourself and decide if it is worth doing or not. To get to Sigulda Bobsleigh track (Sigulda Bobsleigh, Luge, and Skeleton track) you can use a train, or a bus, or a private service.
We hired a private tour with a driver and paid Euro 290 in total for both.
After the hotel pickup, it took us about 1 hour to drive from Riga to the track and 1 hour back. (Hotel Pickup, 1 hour drive)
The Bobsleigh Track was built in the town of Segulda in 1986 and is 1 km long. It has 121 meters of elevation and 17 over-banks. Maximum speed of 120 km/per hour and gravitational force of 5G can be reached on the Olympic bobsleigh. Soft Winter Bobsleigh. When we arrived, we were provided with helmets. I would recommend wearing active-style clothing and comfortable, no-heels footwear because you will be exposed to extreme speed, quick turns, and tremendous pressure during this experience. Our first activity was the Soft Winter Bobsleigh.
I really liked it, because it gives a perfect amount of excitement, thrill, and fun. And it is not TOO extreme. In my opinion, everybody can enjoy it. The ride lasted a little over 1 minute (1 min 7 seconds). We got back to the base and were waiting for our turn for the Olympic Winter Bobsleigh.
Because it is an extreme sport, it imposes significant stress on your back and core muscles. To mitigate a potential risk of injuries, it is very important to:
have NO previous problems with the spine or neck
have strong core muscles
and generally, be in a good physical shape
Now it was our turn. The professional instructor explained the rules and was very knowledgeable and accommodating (Safety Briefing). Now, let’s enjoy our 44 seconds of the Olympic Bobsleigh ride. (Video of the ride) (44.6 seconds). It was a powerful ride and I was glad to end up all in one piece. When we reached a speed of 80-90 km/h, we felt like lifting off and flying away from the track! Extreme speed and quick turns gave us a tremendous adrenaline rush and a sense of surreal excitement.
On the other hand, the gravitational force of acceleration is so enormous that your movements are completely uncontrollable. Gravity bounces you around quickly and powerfully, exposing you to a potential risk of injuries.
A few years ago, my husband and I did a similar Olympic bobsleigh in Norway, Lillehammer. They provided us with a helmet and a G-Force Gravity safety belt, something like that. And it made a world of difference. The belt keeps your back protected, decreases the risk of injury, and makes your ride overall much more satisfying. (G-force Gravity Safety Belt helps). At the end, they gave us a Certificate of participation in a bobsleigh ride which was very nice.
To summarize, if you are in Riga, Latvia, and are looking for the real thrill, the Olympic Bobsleigh track in Sigulda is a great place to visit.
Soft Winter Bobsleigh - is an exciting, thrilling, and fun experience that everybody can enjoy. Olympic Winter Bobsleigh - is an extreme, surreal, and potentially risky experience that is not suitable for everybody. But if it is for you - you will love it!
