My dad and his ford racing maniac friend were doing this to their mud bogger truck in the 1980s. Cash was low so he got a set of old worn out Allmost bald gumbo monster Mudder 44s. From a guy who was throw them away in garbage FREE so , They shaved them very cool , they had to use an old soldering gun thing , it took so long heatiing up , not easy like using this one . I wish I had a pic. Their truck was top truck many years in mud racing. Shaved them deep only good for mud. They would pop or damage from rocks and serious off roading , but they worked in mud bog races,

To lay out your final cut on the sidewall just use a cardboard template. Measure out 3"(or whatever dimension you want) poke a hole for a marker, silver sharpie works awesome, and drag that around against the rim. To keep it a uniform distance press the cardboard against the rim to emboss the arc. Then cut the cardboard to that line so it slides right along the rim and gives you a perfectly consistent radius. You make a template in 5 minutes and then you've got one for every single rim diameter you see.

Man back in the day I use to cut custom tires for dirt track racing ATVs. Used Volkswagen tires and cut them with a hack saw. Let the cords show!!!! Wish I had a groover back then. Been a heck of a lot easier and quicker!!!!

I have 35x15.5x15 boggers on a jeep yj that are almost bald and beaten is it safe to do this or something similar to get some more life out of them while using them on rough terrain?
@jeffclark4008

What is the reason for shaving the sides? Seems like that would greatly weaken the tire. Do you need them to flex like rear drag car tires? Also, I noticed these are on 5 lug rims, what are these going on? I have 35" boggers on my bronco with 1/2 ton axles and a 400hp motor, I snap front axle shafts left and right. I can't imagine what 44's with that much grip would do.

Reducing rotating mass is the main reason, which means that it takes stress off of all moving parts and also frees up wasted horsepower, lets the tire flex where it needs to flex and stay stiff at the lugs to increase traction and you can also change the tread pattern to work better in certain applications
@andrewk332
4 жыл бұрын
Is the purpose just to make the tire lighter?
@sizemattersoffroad9103
4 жыл бұрын
Yes lighten the tire up and reducing rotating mass which frees up wasted horsepower, also let’s the tire flex where it needs to and keeps it stiff enough to get the power to the ground

Joan Rodriguez The depth varies from the side wall to the center it will always be deeper at the shoulder than anywhere else if you want to play it safe set your blade between 1/4” and 3/8”, but I let the blade ride on the cords, it takes a lot of practice
