Whoever designed Para Beetle Challenge must have been involved in designing Wonder's Special Stages, I swear.

For The Lost Levels I used Mario mostly, due to better jumping control. Thinking about World e here, I think the devs had a lot of fun designing those levels. Maybe they even heared about Lunar Magic at that time already or were early "Kaizo"esque players, who just used their personal experience, upping the difficulty bazillions of times. Another thought is, maybe they needed to think anout value when players bought those card boosters. So it might be the levels had to be extra difficult to stretch those levels as well :P

I think the ironic thing for me is that I used Luigi throughout much of the SMAS Lost Levels and it was all because of the springboards. There was one level where I never could figure out how to get further, because this jump seemed impossible for me using Mario, so I went with Luigi and found he got a lot more air. I have a memory of me beating D-4 with Luigi, but... I honestly wonder how the hell I did it...

I'm surprised you were still using Luigi. It seems to me that these levels were designed with only Mario in mind.

Yeah, I wanted to do some clever/cute by alternating between Mario & Luigi. Then I realized the horrible truth that Luigi was far more extreme than his Lost Levels self. I eventually learn it the hard way on one particular level that was especially built for Mario in mind.
