Overwatch and League are also very one dimensional, they take the core idea of making people angry at each other and build every unique mechanic and balancing decision into that philosophy.

League of legends is actually a metaphor for a toxic relationship. Well... actually I'm not sure about the 'metaphor' part.

@@Guyro3278 every character is designed to feel as bad to play against as possible. It's genius how every victory feels great and every loss even worse. Riot has also made it so that if at all possible, your team includes at least one person that will take the same role you did even if you picked it first. Truly incredible design.

@@Guyro3278 I almost forgot to mention. Riot engineered superintelligent flies with an estimated *3* IQ. These are the players you are actually playing against. They've even invaded the highest ranks and even one pro player playing in the grand finals was later proven to be one of these flies. These flies only play the new broken champions and that's why they succeed. Here is the interesting part: These flies are the players you are actually playing against. They've even invaded the highest ranks and even one pro player playing in the grand finals was later proven to be one of these flies. You've never actually played against real humans, but instead these superintelligent flies (superintelligent for fly standards) This is why it seems that in every game only your team has those idiots that don't understand the game. It's nit meant to be balanced. It's not meant to be fair. It's all there to simulate addiction and toxic relationships. You could go endlessly deep into this. For example they've created many characters with really interesting lore they never do anything with and so many people are left waiting for the next shot of unfulfilling lore for characters no one cares about.

Something else people take for granted about modern platformers that came with SMB is how smooth it's movement actually feels, the way Mario's jump works in SMB was miles ahead of basically anything else that came before it in how you could alter your height by letting go of the button at different points and how it carried momentum naturally from a run, it's obvious today, but comparing it to what was around it at that time is just stark, like Pitfall.

Yeah you're right. Everything that came before was just a binary input of max jump or no jump. And the way he sorta slides around was crazy for the time

As a 2D-platformers lover, I can confirm that jumping is a very fun mechanic.

One thing I think Nintendo does better than any other AAA developer is managing their franchises. Over time, they've done a really good job of diversifying their IPs into different experiences to appeal to a wide variety of different genres and trends. Mario is a classic platformer. Zelda is an action RPG. Splatoon is a squad based multiplayer shooter. Metroid is a metroidvania with strong survival horror elements. Fire Emblem is (usually) a fantasy turn based strategy RPG. If real time strategy is out of fashion this year, then Nintendo can go with Animal Crossing and publish a slice of life farming sim instead. The diversity of franchises they've cultivated and their ability to maintain them over time means they are always relevant no matter what the industry is doing.

Mario kart Wii, Mario kart 7, and Mario kart 8. Nintendo re releases the same game for like three generations, but yet we can't get a new f-zero let alone just remaster F-zeroX and GX with online compatibility without the stupid split screen limitation.
