Finally being able to play Mario Bros. with my kids is the reason its so HUGE that they removed the timer. Perhaps The timer made sense back in the day, but today ; values in a game are devided into so many more things than just challanging yourself to completion. i really tried to play new super mario bros and 3D world with my young kids, but the timer just made it impossible for them to get properly introduced.

The later ghost houses in Super Mario World especially were the ones where the timer mattered because one could get lost. Some of the longer SMB3 levels especially in World 7/8 also made the timer matter. Most of the time throughout the series, though, the timer was generous enough to not create any real urgency.
@rickyricardo4331

The timer absolutely mattered in the final Special level "Funky" in Super Mario World. If you didn't sprint through that stage, you'll definitely run out of time. SMB 3 was breakthrough for the franchise because it did away with linear progression and gave you the impression of world exploration by choosing what level you wanted to play next and even bypass levels.

This is why you can have a game after 20 years suddenly get new tech to optimize a run. Wonder actually already lets players make meaningful choices that define your game experience: you can choose to equip badges that trivialize some parts of the game, play easy heroes that literally cant die unless they fall into a pit, enable being ressed by other players if you turn online play on. It's basically a perfect "choose your adventure" type of game. And I understand why they removed it - Wonder actually incentivizes exploring the level just like they do in 3D Mario games, so it makes sense there's no timer here as well. But I don't see any issue in making the timer optional as it reinforces their "choose your adventure" paradigm.
@Vexal50

> play easy heroes that literally cant die unless they fall into a pit Honestly this is my biggest gripe with the game. Not that there's a mode that just lets you breeze through, but the fact that if you want to play as *Yoshi*, you're forced to take the invincibility. It's so arbitrary.
@drdynanite
10 ай бұрын
@@Vexal50 I can see why it's annoying to you, and I agree they could've just made it a customizable perk. But it's not arbitrary for sure in case of Yoshi, since Yoshi is invincible in all 2D Mario games I'm aware of.

Yoshi himself plays more like he does in the Mario games as well, albeit with the arcing double jump from the Yoshi titles...though I can't remember if that was ever added into NSMB. If we go to the Yoshi games in regards to Yoshi being invincible, you weren't invincibile in Yoshi's Story, Wooly World, or Crafted World, so there's already precedence for Yoshi not being invincible in his own series. And I'll be honest; I feel the Island games don't give Yoshi a health system because it'd be weird to mix that in with the timer system. As for invincibility being tied to a badge; that's definitely how they should have handled it honestly.

I appreciate the removal of time because now a level doesn't just need to be a "go left to right till you hit the finish." They can make more exploration based levels, puzzle levels, levels with secrets... All things they have done. It'll let them really sink into levels and make them more in depth, ones players can really sit in and enjoy without the pressure of running out of time. Levels open up to becoming a playground rather than a cheap 0.25c ride you'd see outside of a mall walmart in the 90s. If they want to design levels around having a time limit, they can do that, too! "I'm going to go backwards from the air and see where these clouds go, oh nvm no time to do all that." "I haven't figured out this castle's layout and tricks yet, but I'm dead now because Nintendo God arbitrarily decided I took too long." I got sunshine when it came out, but I’ve honestly never gotten past the early part of the game. I still have my GameCube hooked up and have it in the Switch All Stars collection as well. I really should get around to it. I’ve probably put close to a hundred hours into Odyssey. And it’s not exactly a long game. I’ll never be able to judge Mario 64 objectively. I still remember getting it with my n64 on Christmas Eve 1996 and playing until 3AM on Christmas morning. (We always did presents on Christmas Eve when I was a kid). Anyway, I have too much nostalgia to be a fair judge, but I put Odyssey right up there with Mario 64. I’ve never been able to really love Galaxy because of the Wii motion controls, which I have very little tolerance for. I don’t care what anyone says; no matter how successful the Wii was, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s the worst Nintendo home console. Unless you count the Virtual Boy as a console. I mean, it wasn’t really portable…

The last Mario game I went all in on was 3D World. Fantastic game, and Champion's Road was a hell of a beast. Using Punch Out as an example of timers being archaic design, even if it's only footage, feels really cheap. Each round in boxing is timed, and it was like that long before video games lmao. I feel like it all depends on the game. I'm glad Mario Wonder doesn't have a timer because it lets me fully explore any stage without fear of losing a life, and I also appreciate that there are seeds that require you to reach the end of a level (or close to) very quickly. I think it manages a very good balance. My only complaint so far with the game was due to needing certain characters in order to find tokens in a level. That kind of trial and error annoys me.
