Bowser Jr.'s Fiery Flotilla - Mission 1
Gobblegut's Aching Belly
Good thing the stage itself is pretty short, since Gobblegut, if you ask me, is one of the most difficult first bosses ever. There must be something I'm missing, because even now, I have quite a bit of trouble getting rid of him.
The stage consists of a bunch of walkways leading up to a small fort, then a lava planet directly overhead. After that, you go straight to the boss. The normal way to get through here is to defeat the Magikoopa, then turn the switch that opens the fortress door. Instead, I went onto the Thwomp, grabbed the Comet Medal, then made my way to the top of the fortress walls. This automatically opens the door, but you can also jump straight to where the Dry Bones are and use the Sling Star.
Bowser Jr. is ready to face Mario, and he's brought the giant dragon Gobblegut with him. Looking at its appearance, it seems to be a relative of Fracktail and Wracktail from Super Paper Mario, just substantially smaller. And a lot more difficult. Gobblegut's weak spots are the red bulges on it; there are 6 of them total. Gobblegut normally flies too high for Mario to reach, so he has to spin to hit the bulges either where it's digging into the planet or where it's digging out. After you destroy three bulges, Gobblegut gets mad and now travels faster than Mario can run and burrows out of the planet from a closer spot than before. It travels fast enough that its head will probably hit Mario (or Luigi) before the last bulge even gets within range.
Personally, I have more trouble with Gobblegut than I do with Megahammer or even the Boomsday Machine. It's a pretty tough introduction to the increased difficulty of this game compared to the last...perhaps a little too tough.
