If Super Mario World had been ported to MS-DOS shortly after release, what would it have looked and sounded like limited to the traditional CGA palette on a computer with an AdLib soundcard? This is my attempt to answer that question.. Download the MIDIs here: www.mediafire.com/file/h58qgchhe455j6i/smw-mid-clean.zip/file Download the MP3s here: www.mediafire.com/file/t6c6kum0lgyaj9g/smw-mp3-opl2.zip/file These songs are all directly converted from a clean SMW rom. I had to select the instruments for each track, so I always chose the closest GM standard equivalent. Sometimes finding an equivalent wasn't easy since SMW uses some pretty unique samples, but I'm content with it now (as would developers doing a rush-job port back in 1991) ..Some nerds out there will probably point out that this is only 99% faithful to a soundcard of the era, and that DOS games are stretched vertically to fit a 4:3 monitor, so this image would look stretched, and they'd be right. Enjoy! This is like getting nostalgia for a set of experiences from a different universe. Synesthesia of these melodies from playing SMW and these OPL instruments from playing LucasArts adventure games.

I tried these on SCVA-55 (that's what I like to call SOUND Canvas VA's SC-55 mode, Falcosoft MIDI Player also refers it to that, Virtual Sound Canvas with SC-55 instruments was called the VSC-55 officially, so yea) and it sounded like they came from a legitimate PC port which may have happened in a different timeline where Nintendo didn't shut down id's planned PC port of Super Mario bros that in this timeline turned into Commander Keen.

Not better music The Yamaha OPL2 (3812) has 9 Channels, 6 are regular, 3 are dedicated to drums, which means that each Channel has a kick, a snare or a hi-hat, and you cannot switch beetween them, while on the Super Famicom's SPC700 you have 8 channels where you can switch whenever you want Besides that SPC700 is literally ADPCM compared to OPL2's 2op FM
@ssg-eggunner
2 жыл бұрын
Update: It turns out that this is just the percussion mode which is used with MIDI If you actually write something from Scratch, you can use all The 9 channels indepentently and create Custom FM patches too Even using PC Speaker which has some PCM capabilities which might require CPU cycles
