Great review and comparison. To me, the ZDM-1 wins on tone and average sound, the AT2040 has too much nasal tone... I can say that I will buy the Zoom, I was almost decided to get the AT2040, but after watch your video, I do prefer the ZDM-1. Thanks.

It was a tough decision for me as well and maybe depending on the day I might flip my decision. I think both of these mics would be good for anyone starting out making content. Let me know what you think of the ZDM-1 when you get it! Thanks for checking out the video!

Well 2 years later and the ZDM-1 is now half the price at $50 compared to the AT 2040, I agree the 2040 is very odd but the problem is when it sounds bad it's really bad and sounds super nasally and flat and the ZDM-1 is more consistent and sounds better even than when the 2040 is sounding good

Thank you for you experienced review and perspective. 👌 I really love the AT2040. ...Note: I noticed midway through the video the label was switched for the two mics. But it sure looked like it kept switching to the wrong mic mismatching the audio and video for a few minutes at least. 😬 Kind of confusing for us viewers.

I just listened back and the labels are right. I even check the Premiere project and it is right. It's pretty obvious when you hear the AT2040 and the narrow low end. The one thing that I did notice is that the "Noise Test" in the Untreated room had the wrong mic for Broll but the tag was right. Did you use headphones?

thanks for the good review! Keep the good work coming! I heard on another review on the ZDM-1 that the size is slightly off standard and the shock mount could be difficult to find? I don't have the microphone but planning to get one, could you please let me know which size or model shock mount did you use? thanks!!!

I just added the link to the shock mount, that I have for the ZDM-1, in the description. It's right under the ZDM-1 Link as well. Thanks for checking out the video!

Hello! I think I will choose ZDM-1. I have a Zoom H1n and I want to continue with Zoom, but I don't know if it is better F3, H5, H6 or PodTrak P4.

Hello friend, my room does not have acoustic treatment, there is a lot of external noise, which would you recommend these 2 microphones?
@RebelTech1990
2 жыл бұрын
For the price, both of these are very good. The polar patterns are perfect for u treated areas. I do recommend treating your room with some cheap soft stuff, just to optimize the sound quality. Moving blankets are the best cheap option. When it comes to these two, choose the one you think will compliment your voice better. The AT2040 is better at noise rejection but consider the tone. You don’t want to sacrifice your tone for rejection of noise. Hope this helps, thanks for checking out the video!

we got two of the zdm mics for our mobile podcast kit. I can't say that I would use them as the primary studio mics unless we had to on the cheap, but for the most part, no complaints. I also think the AT2040 is really nasally and can't handle plosives at all. 20 bucks more to sound like a goose? I sound bad enough, I don't need help, thanks. Speaking of Zoom not being a mic company? I don't care at all. I like the sound of these, for 80 bucks, especially. Audio Technica makes some fantastic mics, their low end offerings are just "meh." MXL only makes mics, and their broadcast dynamic is hands down, the worst thing I've heard in this category. Btw, the more I see your vids, the more I like your work and your vibe. Keep em comin, wouldja?!

To be honest, I got to a point of resentment towards the ZDM-1. The more I covered it the more annoyed I got with the lack of care towards the build. I know it sounds good, for the price, but the build is something I take seriously with my gear. To be fair, I said they aren’t a microphone company to give them slack. It takes time to build a department and hopefully they expand on the mics. As far as the AT2040, it has the build, off axis rejection and the company track record. But it is made for a specific type of person that can benefit from the tuning. Thank you for checking out the videos! I really do appreciate it. Don’t you worry, videos start back up tomorrow!

Kinda weird coz I feel like even with 80hz cut off by the 2040 it sounds darker and has a deeper tone.

That seems like it will work for you. I would say, if you already have a mic, emulate it by cutting up to 80-90Hz. Then you’ll understand how your voice sounds with out those tones. If you don’t then you should be good with the AT2040. Worst case I’d you return it. You’ll know as soon as you plug it in and listen.

I think I play it up for the camera lol. I just feel that they cut corners where they shouldn’t have. Especially with other mics, in the same price range, with excellent builds. Who knows maybe they’ll listen with the next mic they make. Thanks for checking out the video!

@@RebelTech1990 I gotcha. I actually picked one up because I just love a good sounding cheap microphone. For less than $80, I feel like they did alright for anyone who wants to dip their toe into this world. Yeah, the build quality might be lacking. But as long as it lives on a boom arm, should be ok.

I think that is where I was a little off with my take. I am thinking too much like a “audio snob”. Taking the market into consideration, the mic does as it’s advised for.
