I agree with a lot of what you said. There was so many tone shifts in this book. It felt like it wanted to be serious and then it fell back into comedy slice of life things.

There is so much I don't understand how someone can get to those conclusions, but saying that you enjoyed Alice is still something. And as you said many times, is based on personal preference. And instead of recapping everything you mentioned I'm just going to share some personal thoughts. - You mentioned that you expected Hershel and Roy to actually merged. But this will negate the bases their / his power (as explained in book 2). At the point in which they are worried that they will merge, Mary consult them that they both come in here dream hopping. But about this I get where you are coming from. I actually thought that this is reversed flag and Hershel will create third personality for a specific need. But again I can see where you are coming from, he might remain a shifter, but both minds to merge and yes this would've been interesting. - As a whole, I come with quite different conclusions and fillings from the books. The "slice of life" parts made me care for the characters, for the awkward behaviour of Chad in his relations with Angela and so on. Getting to know them as friends in height school, and the juxtaposition with the violent live they are aimed for, was quite enjoyable and well presented. But then again, I do enjoy stories like "The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet" by Becky Chambers - Also what, no emotional effect in the last battle - you didn't felt anything? And no one dies - yes no one of the main characters, their friends and the teachers, but that's thanks to Nick, and makes sense in the story, it's not a Ex Machina. But Nick alone have 2 kills in this fight and there are so many more. Or did you meant that outside of Crispin and Charles (both killed by Nick) the rest were more like SGI monsters in the current Films, soulless pawns? However, despite the different options, the review was interesting, and I did enjoy hearing different view on one of my favourite stories. And you should read Corpies - it fleshed out the world more, and gives better perspective for book 3 and 4. Yes it takes place between book 2 and 3.

I’m just a little confused as to why you rated it a 4/5 when it seems like you didn’t enjoy the book at all. I know you briefly mentioned that you liked the amount of care given to teaching kids to be heroes, some of the fights, and Alice but those positives seem to be outweighed by the things you didn’t like, or were confused by, or would change. So I think the real question I’m asking is what specifically did you like about the book that makes it a 4/5?

The series is fun, but it would’ve been better if the girls weren’t just written to tease and allure the boys. Also, it would’ve been better to see a classmate who makes the move by the time of graduation to be a villain full-time. We see a few side characters that make the move, and we see Nick’s obvious shift back and forth, but we never see someone who becomes bad for good reasons. I also have to question the obvious Naruto/Dragonball Z “tournament” approach to the supers’ curriculum. Obviously they have to learn how to fight, but it would be far more realistic for a “Top Gun” or “Red Flag” approach where you have the “OpFor” (opposition force) of experienced instructors giving more structured, gradually progressive training to learn how to deal with combat. With so low a percentage of supers and powereds in the population and so high an attrition rate from villians killing off the less successful rookie heroes, you wouldn’t just throw freshmen into a ring and have a bare knuckle brawl that could result in fatality be the driving decision of whether a person is hero material or not. It’s also just the sheer cruelty of it compared to fostering the psychological well-being of someone with the ability to hold the world ransom, and hope they don’t decide to switch sides.
