Imagine there was a gang called "The Patina Boys" that break in stores and steal all the tools, leave them out in the rain so that the metal rusts , the wood gets white from the elements then apply linced oil all over them and return them back with a note writing" NOW THEY ARE PERFECT!!!!"

I get home from work, like most of us, tired, grab a beer, and 3 days a week, wonder, what does scoutcrafter have for us today? Now I have another hobby collecting perfect handle screwdrivers, ford wrenches, plomb ratchets, and someday I'll find that german socket set, man gotta have one of those. Thanks for putting out these videos, really enjoy and inspire me.

Once again you bring back great memories. Stanley owned the tool world when I started carpentry school in 1975. Our tool room was fully stocked with great tools like this. I think you made it look better than what I remembered. Should have mentioned that by that time almost every tool in the tool room was several decades old.

10:05 Reminds me of my '77 Cutless Supreme. Brown with cream top. 350 Rocket with that Rochester Quadrajet and those massive 2 1/4" vacuum secondaries. I remember racing a camaro down the on ramp and the kid being so surprised I pulled out ahead of him. Because he definitely had the lighter car. I think some one had cammed my motor up before I got it. It was a very fun car. Ran near whisper quiet too. Oldsmobiles were always so comfortable riding cars. Love the mouse tote! You are too much sometimes! I gotta upvote this video for that alone.

Another great restoration. That No.52 came out wonderful! Looks like it be a good screwdriver for adjustable floats on a Holley carburetor. Your scrap wood/cutoffs reminds me of a file handle I attempted to make recently. Didn't feel or fit a file tang properly. Ended up with a split too. Mini tote is awesome. I use a Craftsman Carryall tote from the 50's or 60's. Handle was missing when I got it. Replaced with wooden coat hanger rod from an old house and lag bolts. I instantly knew where you was going when you mentioned sleeper too 😂

That really turned out nice! I never have a problem with making any tool my own. I always do what I like and makes me happy and dont worry about the "rest" out there. I did a lot of racing in my young days. In the 2 small towns I lived between thats just what we all did back in those days...and it was great! I really miss those times. Around here we had our share of sleepers too. Great times and great memories!

I had a sleeper car. It was a 1953 Plymouth sedan I bought from my old maid Aunt. It was a homely car with a straight 6 motor. It had a Hy-Drive transmission which had a column stick shift and clutch pedal that you could drive like a stick shift or you could just leave it in third gear and drive it like an automatic. I took the indicator off the top of the steering column so it looked just like a standard transmission. When I found a really hot car I would open the hood to show them the tiny motor and then challenge them to a short race in 3rd gear only. Won a lot of bets that way. I got a good laugh seeing the Patina Boyz.

That coating is I believe a "genuine workman's hand oil, garage surface, and natural toolbox tumbled finish." Oil, grease and dirt. Because fewer people seem to be disgusted by handling dirty tools than it seems. Which reminds me: Can you do a quick couple of tips on cleaning sockets at some point? They seem almost impossible to get clean once they get gunky, especially in the smaller sizes. Maybe a mosh topic?

He swapped in a 327 chevy v8, and was built to the max. Talk about a sleeper! It was well muffled unless he opened up the dump pipes. 4 speed, positraction and the thing stomped everything. Excellent job with this. I love the Millers Falls-ish finish. And anyone who thinks rust and pitting is patina is insane. True patina is oxidation without rust and can even be somewhat of a natural rust prevention. I have even forced a patina using vinegar and/or mustard on some of my carbon steel knives. A good patina and some oil will go a long way to prevent rust when using your tools out in the elements. If there is patina but no rust or pitting I will sometimes put some oil on and leave it. If there is rust and pitting and you let that go...is there a tool jail to send people to?

@57WillysCJ
3 жыл бұрын
I bet that is not BLO on the handle. That is grease and grime from some guys dirty hands that rarely wiped the tool down. When he did, that was all he did, no cleaner, no brush, just a dirty shop rag. As far as sleepers go, there was a guy where I grew up that had an old Plymouth business coupe with no hood and a ratty strait six that was coated in grease and rust. In the back behind his seat he had mounted a Hemi with a short drive shaft like one from a Toronado. He would start cruising bars after dark where no one could clearly see his car. Somebody was always willing to bet. I was really young and I remember asking why you needed two engines. They told me and then told me to keep my mouth shut about it.

Larry- That’s why we always joke about “walking the line”. A poor restoration will take away the value but a well done restoration increases the value. Old rusty tools are without value so if you restore one of those you can’t go wrong. I stay away from “Collectible tools” most of the time. I prefer regular tools.
