There is no Slot A. AMD's chips used Intel's old Socket 7 until they came up with their own Socket A design. Intel was the only company switching to a slotted CPU design, AFAIK. The K6-3 was the product AMD put up to rival the Pentium 3, and it was still a socket 7 design. I think it pretty much required the Super 7 boards by the time the final 500MHz K6-III+ came out, although I'm not sure of that.

I'm not sure, all I can see on the motherboard, is that it uses the SiS 530 chipset. There are no clear markings telling who made it, so it may just be a custum board. I must admit that I didn't really take notice of the manufacturer while having it taken to bits to clean everything. It's very compact when assembled, which makes most of the motherboard hidden away. I did remove the PSU (which is mounted right over the center of the motherboard), but nothing much was revealed.

it really depends on what CPU you plan on using of course. for a K6-II I would use an SS7 machine just for the extra FSB speed (wont make a huge difference, but for demanding games its welcome) if youre planning to run something like a P200 or an MMX , I would stick to a standard Socket 7 board with an Intel chipset if possible , since at that point the 100Mhz FSB means nothing, while the stability of the intel chipset does, especially since AGP really doesn't make a huge difference.
@kaneCVR

@4:00 - the pentium does not have a superior FPU to the K6-II (it does however outperform the K6-1). The reason you get higher FPS in quake with a pentium is because the game is HEAVILY optimized for pentium P54 CPUs - but don't take my word for it, do a google search on the subject. In fact, a pentium MMX will outperform a Pentium II and even a Penium III (P6 architecture) clock per clock in quake, witch is silly (tested with pentium MMX running at 3x100 @ 3V vs pentium III 450 running at 4.5x66).

Well, I feel like I've won the lottery. Today I saved 3 retro PC, that my friend was planning to dump on scrapyard. Looked like both weren't used for about 15 years. So far I tested only two of them, both are working great with some old W98 installation running, CMOS battery OK, harddrives are working well too. The first one, that had 486 sticker on it was unfortunatelly upgraded to Cyrix 6x86L PR166+, but it had i430VX mobo (southbridge revision with working USB controller, now i have to made an appropriate header), S3 VirgeDX 4meg card, 32MB RAM simm and two DIMM slots. The second one is a real gem - inside is FIC VA-503+ AT/ATX motherboard with VIA MVP3 chipset, 512k L2 cache, AGP, PCI, 64MB RAM simm and free dimm sockets. It is equipped with Pentium 233MMX with intel stock fan, some TV card and again S3 VirgeDX card (2MB only). This board has jumpers up to 124MHz FSB (in this case PCI is overclocked), classic fan header... so I think I'll pass the cpu and ram into the VX board and get myself "my dream CPU" - K6-III+. Hope I'll get to 600 MHz. Luckily I have one GeForce2MX card and some DIMMs laying around to nicely fit in this rig 8-) Haven't opened the third computer yet, but it looks like something from PIII/Athlon era.

I think it would be interesting to compare the performance between the Intel 486DX-50 and the DX2-50, since the very faster 50MHz bus might help in RAM-intensive tasks (the video card in the DX-50 certainly will be the bottleneck, since the DX2-50 could use a VLB card, but the DX-50 will have to use a ISA one in order to be stable, but the faster communication between CPU/RAM might help in some tasks)

Slot A / Socket A boards? I have a Epox 7KXA Slot A board with K7 600 that I used to overclock to 850 This was later reduced to 800 due to the power supply rails not handling the current requirements of 5v rail pushing 12v rail to 18v I remember voiding the warrant by cracking the CPU case open to access the golden fingers for the golden fingers device and to re-solder the resisters on CPU cache divider changing from 1/2 to 1/3 clock speed divider. This was one of the last CPU's I overclocked by so much. The computer used to have a lot of travel on it travelling to LAN parties back before broadband become available killing of the need for large LAN events.

I have a SIS Super Socket 7 board. It's FSB goes up to 133Mhz. The only downside is the missing AGP slot. Also, don't forget on many boards, the AGP Bus Frequency is not just PCI x 2, but a FSB - AGP divider at best at 3:2. So anything above 100Mhz FSB overclocks your AGP bus. Especially on a Asus P3B-F, which caused me alot of headache.

Nice video Phil, it looks like the asus board is more optimized with better chipset. Back in the days it really depended on which manufacturer you chose, especially with via chipset boards in the slot1/sc370 era. But the same was happening with supersocket 7 too. Maybe the ali board has slower cache, so if the application fits into L2 it is faster on socket7, if it is not, then faster fsb on supersocket7 machine helps. Would be interesting to test K6-III/K6-III+/K6-2+ in both boards with onboard L2 cache (aka L3) disabled to really see if there is benefit from the faster FSB.

About Super Socket 7: Anything special to look out for regarding these boards? I have no experience with these, since I never owned one. (maybe thats why I would like to try a build) I can see they are made in AT and ATX form factors, but both supports ATX PSU. VIA or ALI Chipset? Max HDD capacity support? Some of the SS7 board are ridiculous priced on Ebay. (it's just old electronics, not Gold) But I have found a few reasonable ones, But are AT FormFactor. And one ATX that should be "working" but needs repair for stability(two new caps) . Might snatch that one, since I orefer ATX for a new case build. Its in Europe, so shipping is reasonable..

Super Socket 7 was AMD's response to being unable to license Slot 1 from Intel. Prior to this, x86 was on the same sockets 3/5/7 during a generation. So Super 7's competition was the technically-superior Slot 1. It survived on cost and being shared by AMD/Centaur/VIA-Cyrix, and it endures today among hobbyists because of the broad range of components you can use with (Super) Socket 7.

Direct VGA capture. Everything I show is on real hardware. I do some tweak guide DOSBox videos, but everything else is using retro hardware.

I have two VooDoo 5 5500 64mb agp cards laying around, one with the original box. It would have been nice if I could find a socket 7 motherboard that I could use the VooDoo 5 5500 with it.

LellePrinter82 I think SS7 is too weak for a V5K5. I'd suggest a 1 GHz P3 Coppermine or Slot A Orion 1 GHz

You need a Socket A platform to use the V5 5500 to it's full potential.

No. You dont need it. You can Max out a V5K5 with good graphics quality on a 800 Mhz Slot A.

So how do you explain that I gained a lot of performance with my V5 5500 when I went from a Pentium III 733 to an Athlon 1400 C back in 2001? 3dfx-enthusiasts use the Via KT333-chipset for optimal V5-performance but I didn't try myself yet, if that is of any benefit compared to socket A board with only 266 FSB.

I've just done a video on that CPU. If you didn't get a notification about it, click on that bell icon below the video and enable notifications.

The problem with SiS was never the performance, it was their shit chipset drivers. They work now, but back when they were new they were very unstable and Win9x bluescreened enough without help. It was difficult to sell reliable PCs with SiS chipsets, so it was better to stick with Intel.

Ran a non steam copy of cs source & half-life 2 back in the day when my older brother upgraded too a new pc he left his old one to me on a 1600 pro 512 mb card (his ice q pci-e version) if i still had that card id love to put it in with a am2+ dualcore 2.7 ghz & 2 gb ram for a pretty neat direct x 9 & below windows xp machine.

K6-III ran Morrowind pretty fine enough. Morrowind. Wolfenstein 3D isn't a good test; all the CPU's run well beyond the specs needed for that. You need to look at stuff like Quake 2 and beyond. And also Windows stuff instead of DOS stuff. That's how you can use the 3d now maths.

K6 eqv to Pentium MMX, K6-2 eqv to Pentium II, K6-3 eqv to Pentium III. K6-2 vs Pentium MMX is not an apple to apple comparison.

Yes it is, all you change out is the CPU. What you are proposing is changing out motherboard, RAM which introduces a lot more variables.

@@philscomputerlab What I an trying to say is K6-2 is equivalent to Pentium II. Performance benchmark on AMD K6-2 vs Pentium MMX is just like comparing Pentium II vs Pentium MMX, and of course K6-2 (Pentium II eqv) will perform better.

@@user__fs That's great, but it's on another Socket/Platform. I'm interested in Socket 7 performance.
