Have you ever watched Below Deck? How real is it as far as tips and guest behavior?
@WorkonaSuperyacht
3 жыл бұрын
Hello Nonc Ched. I've only ever watched a few clips from Below Deck. There is always the possibility of having guests on board that are difficult, or that make strange requests; however, it would be wrong to think that all guests provide endless hassle and drama for the crew. Equally, not all crew members cause endless hassle and drama; if they do, something is going wrong with the hiring and management of the crew. As for tips, the numbers posted by Below Deck seem to be pretty accurate. EUR 200 / USD 250 per day, per crew member is about right. Just remember that not all charter yachts are fully booked all season, in which case there will be no tips.

@@WorkonaSuperyacht Re the tipping, this applies to guests on a charter the yacht? What if the yacht is private and the owner brings their friends or family onboard for a few days/weeks, do they (owner's guests) also tip the crew? Forgive my ignorance, I'm new to watching super yacht videos, this is a whole new world to me 😆

Hello Kayleb. I shall make a video on knots at some point in the future. In the meantime, here is a list of knots that we regularly use on deck: Bowline; Reef Knot; Clove Hitch; Sheet Bend; Rolling Hitch; Round Turn and Two Half Hitches; Figure Of Eight; Monkey's Fist. For an explanation of all these knots and many more, I recommend this website: www.animatedknots.com/

Hello, I will start my courses in June this year, but unfortunately I live in Bucharest (Romania) and I don t have a harbour here for doing dockwalking. In my past I was a professional swimmer, I love being around the water, but Im a little bit confused about "dockwalking". The courses costs around 1500 €, and I can't afford to move in Antibes, Palma de Mallora or stuff like that... I heard that is difficult to enter in this industry, especially if you're not dockwalking. What is your opinion ?
@WorkonaSuperyacht
3 жыл бұрын
Hello Razvan-Vasile. I agree that it's difficult to get started without basing yourself in a major yachting destination. It's not impossible, but it's certainly more difficult. If you're worried about money, remember that you should be able to earn enough from day working to cover your costs. A daily rate will be at least EUR 100. If you can't move to a major yachting destination then you'll have to work particularly hard with online agencies. You'll also need to ensure that you're constantly developing transferable skills that are attractive to a yacht. I know people who have found their first job like this, but it often takes a lot longer.

A bit of a dumb question, but what do you do with the wing covers once they're off? Is there designated, purpose-built storage for them (albeit temporary). Just seems like a tripping hazard to have them laying around.
@WorkonaSuperyacht
3 жыл бұрын
Hello Matt. Unfortunately, on this yacht we weren't provided with any short term storage for the covers. We tuck them away as best we can, but it isn't ideal. On other yachts that I've worked we've had brackets to hang them on temporarily. Making some of our own will be a nice little winter project!

Why don’t yachts use the type of 360 degree views many high-end cars have? Surely that would greatly assist the crew.
@WorkonaSuperyacht
3 жыл бұрын
Great idea! I've done a bit of research and found a solution from Raymarine that does exactly this. It even provides corrective throttle and rudder if it senses that the yacht is going to make contact with an object. I imagine this sort of technology will start to become more commonplace on super yachts in the coming years. I'm told that the yacht Dilbar went one step further and has a system installed that means she can park herself! It works using sensors mounted on the yacht and on the dock; however, this is only any good when parking in a berth that has the sensors installed.

Hey, in regards to your UK passport, have there been any complications with working over in Europe due to Brexit, is everything relatively similar as before or are there new visas and obstacles to get round to be able to work over there / get in to countries be able and get a job on board.
@WorkonaSuperyacht
3 жыл бұрын
Hello TCM. For UK crew who are already employed on a yacht in Europe, the main difference is that we can no longer freely travel away from the yacht for leisure purposes. Other than that, there is no major difference except for a few more stamps in the passport! Unfortunately, UK crew who are looking for work do have some additional challenges. I always recommend checking with the relevant authorities, but here is my understanding of the situation now: UK nationals can still enter the EU without a visa, but will only be given 90 days before having to leave. If they find a job during this time then there's no problem; they will be stamped onto the yacht, and can remain in the EU. If they don't find a job, they will have to leave, and won't be able to return until a further 90 days has passed.

Cap doesn't want to get dripped on? Now I'm wondering who would last longer, even though it would be measured in days, perhaps hours in either case--a Navy crew manning a yacht, or a yacht crew put into service on a Navy ship. I'd barely give the edge to the Navy crew on a yacht since they'd be able to adapt to their new surroundings. The yacht crew put onto a Navy ship would get eaten alive. Only downfall for the Navy crew would be their temperament, or lack of it.
