Awesome hack. Loved it ❤ On variance and variance %; Cal item - Variance = selectedmeasure() - calculate( Selectedmeasure(), Dateadd( datecol, -1,month) ) And the % would be the above calculation divided by prev month

Hi there, Thanks for the feedback and the reply on the variance. Although the DAX is good but it will not be added a calculation item. It will be another measure as placeholder and then we will check in the existing calculation items (MTD/YTD) if variance measure is used and then perform the calculation. I hope it make sense. Thanks!

True, then we need to have a dummy column named ' Variance' & add in the switch statement a row which checks for when isselectedMeasure as 'Variance', need to do a difference of above CY & PY. thanks for the feedback & learning a lot from your videos.

Another great video. Using the Current and Previous measures as triggers for the calculation groups is a great idea.

nice...my biggest issue is the inability to hover over a column and show a nice tooltip (ON THE COLUMN name) Like show the desc from the measure meta data

Calculation groups limit your options of conditional formatting. For example, it is impossible to use bars for some cells and do not for others at the same time. Another restriction - “Discourage implicit measures” property of semantic model. When this property is set to On there are problems with using some of the crucial custom visual such as Microsoft Gantt chart, HTML Content and, I guess, there are more. The main reason I’ve been using calculation groups is the custom formatting they provide. With the resent update of Power BI custom formatting for measures is now possible out of the box. Calculation groups are not needed for that purpose anymore. I plan to get rid of calculation groups once I am ready. “Discourage implicit measures” set to On is pain in the backside.

Hi Sergiy, Thanks for your opinion on the calculation groups. First of all, as a best practice, one should never use implicit measures regardless of whether calculation groups are used or not. Don't want into detail, there are many many discussions on this already. 2nd, the calculation group is more than just the dynamic formatting you mentioned. It is mainly for reuse of calculation. In my earlier videos on calculation groups, I explained what that is, and this is the biggest and the most powerful use case of calculation groups. Regarding conditional formatting, yes it can be challenging. I have a video on it. End of the day, it is a powerful method but power comes with a lot of responsibilities, and one has to make sure they understands the workings of it insight out otherwise they will run into issues. I really appreciate your feedback and your thoughts on calculation groups. Keep on bringing it. Best!
