Dr. Manhattan is hands down my favourite superhero because of many reasons: 1 - he is quite possibly the most powerful superhero ever of all time (teleportation, molecular reconfiguration, size change, self multiplication, precognition, immortality, etc). 2 - the fact that his powers make him great while at the same time destroy who he is, case and point: his precognition, while we only perceive time from moment to moment, he perceives time all at once, therefore he can never truly be sure which moment he is living in because to him it's all happening simultaneously (in complex terms, he is a 4th dimensional being). 3 - His stoic-ness is one of his defining characteristics, and it works!

Probably my favourite fictional character to date. There's something about his (usually) calm demeanour which I like. Perhaps a little too inhumane and callous but, as others have said already, he probably can't really be classed as a hero or a villain. His ability to see events 'ahead of time' (at least ahead of time as humans know it) coupled with his inability to change the course of events potentially throws up some interesting debate on freewill, however.

He's one of my favorite comic book characters of all-time because he is a great attempt a real "superman." When you're as powerful and all-knowing as a deity how can you relate to a normal man when your trials and tribulations are completely different from man? I mean it makes sense you still care if you're just newly transformed at first and still harboring socializations from your former self before you became the superbeing, but over time you're bound to lose humanity once you realize just how ominpotent you really are and start to understand the significance of everything else out there in the universe beyond us, humans. I mean we as humans are less than even specks of dirt compared to the whole universe when you really think about the scope of freaking space.
@TenjoZakito
10 жыл бұрын
I think the difference between Superman and Dr Manhattan is that Superman was born that way, he was born and raised to use his power for goodness, his humanity was never truly lost(if we're talking about the traditional Superman) because it's a constant thing for him, he has people in his life who he respect highly and would allow them to guide him in his life.
@Lotus-Son
10 жыл бұрын
TenjoZakito I actually disagree. The superman character was written that way; but I think it's overly simplistic and wouldn't actually pan out that way at all. Even if you were born that way then a few humans trying to direct you in a certain direction would be like ants trying to tell us how live our lives. It just bears no significance to our being. At best Superman would probably heed the words the best he can for a few years. But over many lifecycles that an average human could live, the superman would still be there and will have matured his thought process so far beyond what an average human can do just because of the time he had on its hands. There's no way an average human could comprehend what the superman would be struggling with in his head. To him our thoughts are so simplistic that it'd most likely become humorous over time to him and he could probably deduce our typical behavior the way scientists predict behavior of matter in physics and chemistry today. It would just be another subject to study; how could he have emotion towards something so much simpler than everything else he knows? And factor in the fact that he could go way beyond the earth to discover and understand what's out there he would keep growing farther and farther past thinking anything human is really that important to the grand scheme of things. Maybe that's a good thing about the majority of Superman comics that we know of; they only really talk about the first 50-100 years of Superman since he was born on Krypton and raised on Earth. In a weird way, maybe it is accurate for his "infant" years of existence if he really cared. But to me it's inevitable that he starts to not care for a "fellow man." He would eventually become a Dr. manhattan with time.
@newguy90
10 жыл бұрын
TenjoZakito Actually, in the scale of the Universe we're pretty huge. The smallest size we can theoretically observe is a Planck area. If we blew up a dot of 0.1 mm to the size of the known universe, the Planck area would be the size of that original dot inside the new "dot-verse". Or in math terms, if an average sized adult human is a magnitude of 10^0, then the known Universe is 10^(26), while the Planck area is 10^(-35).
@Lotus-Son
10 жыл бұрын
that's 26 orders of magnitude greater than us. We can't even make out micron particles out visibly and that's only 6 orders of magnitude smaller in relation to stuff we see. That's less than a speck of dirt. I don't think I was inaccurate in saying that to the rest of the universe we're pretty insignificant in affecting anything else going out there.
@TenjoZakito
10 жыл бұрын
ThyChrysanthemum I wouldn't disagree with the idea of Superman becoming similar to Dr Manhattan after many many life cycles, but Dr Manhattan became that way in a matter of years, Dr Manhattan was a human and he lost the ability to comprehend human emotions in a very short time after gaining his powers. Superman, on the other hand, is always depicted in a much more human way, the charm of his character is that he never kill and would save as many civilians as possible. His mortal enemy is a human with high intelligence, and when facing a fight with Batman, another human being, most fans have the confidence that Batman would still put up a good fight. Superman is always shown being more naive than others, some would say too much of a goody two -shoes, but I think that's the selling point of Superman, he is stronger than us, but he is one of us. His humanity side is what makes readers get attached to him. This is also why I loved the Watchmen series, because Watchmen dealt with it's characters in a much more realistic way, because they're telling a story with an ending, Dr Manhattan could be cold and distant but that's part of the story and they don't have to deal with low sales rate while trying to sell Dr Manhattan's name.

D.M is by far the greatest. Everyone always tries to compare him to Superman Prime but I say that if we go off the true story, D.M were evil and would want to kill another hero, he would see the future and what Superman becomes and stop it before it happens by killing Superman in the now. In the end, D.M wins every time. Also we never got to see all his powers because he felt that he was too powerful.

I honestly don't see the anger towards the changed ending. Would a huge CGI squid fit into a movie involving rape, pregnant women being gunned down, nuclear war and people getting their head chopped open with meat cleavers? Sure the graphic novel got away with it , but the squid's design and look fitted the novel's art design, and was therefore consistent with the tone. If a CG squid appeared in the movie, there would the risk of it looking silly and would derail the film. At least the new ending is consistent with the movie's tone. Anyway, the rest of the film followed the source closely, so why does one change make people angry like it was an M. Night ending or something? At least Zack Synder has a few good films under his belt, whereas M. Night's only good film is Unbreakable (Sixth Sense is overrated tosh).

The crazy part about Dr. Manhattan is that I understand him...If all of the sudden you had the power to go anywhere, any place, and not be bothered by food, work, people, nothing could hurt you... would you worry about the trivial things "we" humans fight about? he was simply fed up with Humanity and left to be what he was as a Demi God... I would do the same.

"With great power comes great distance..." Dr. Manhattan is an extremely alienated character with his unique nature: I'd say his role in the story was dead on. Not everyone who stumbles onto power gets a chip in their shoulder or genocidal intentions....this was a real character to me.

Yeah, I totally agree with you, he's get obliterated if what he shown is his maximum power, but we don't know his limit, his absolute strenght, so we don't know for sure if that would happen. But if his maximum power is what he show, he is weaker than any cosmic superheroes/vilains.

I think flash or zoom could be dangerous to Dr manhattan, they literally just run so fast that they run in the past and kick Dr manhattans father so quick and strong in the nuts that he can't make Dr manhattan, but Dr manhattan must be quick and turn flash or zoom into powder...
@connordutton674

Dr. Manhattan himself tried to figure out himself while he was created. He got to the point where he considered that he was a ripple in time anomaly that even if you went back in time and stopped his father that he would still exist. Because you went back in time to stop his father because of dr. Manhattan but by doing so dr. Manhattan supposedly never existed so you would never have a reason to go back in time and so your interference would disappear. You can literally do anything except you couldn't kill him we're not making be born. That's why Eobard Thawn never kills Barry Allen because without Barry he wouldn't be the Reverse Flash.

out of any superhero or supervillain out of any company or book, i would like to have Dr. Manhattan's powers over any others, even over Galactus. yes, there are many other great choices, like god mode Superman, but Dr. Manhattan's powers aren't limited like other hero's powers. he can literally manipulate time, space, and matter in any way he wants. he can literally do, create, or destroy anything he ever wants to. and he can SEE INTO THE FUTURE FFS!!! yes, there are definitely drawbacks like the ones shown in the movie and in the comics. but i think it would be worth it overall as long as you can mentally deal with the downsides.

plontulublalulu It wasn't an expirment it was an accident. Yeah it wasn't realistic ofcourse but he's sorta like a parody of super heros. You know like the cliche "accident gave him powers" origin, and the cliche OP abilities. Watchmen is more of a "what if super heros were real" story rather than the traditional fantasy super hero story.

+poiuytr it's weird cuz even normally reputable sites/channels seem to make up and overstate his abilities all the time. Hell, even in this video they say he can manipulate time when he even stated that he can only view events within his own timeline but cannot change anything. Just things like that get spread around a lot. And you're right, people do claim he is all-knowing when there are dozens of quotes directly from him saying he was unaware or didn't know things. People say he is omnipotent yet he admitted he wouldn't be able to stop all of Russia's nukes. He's certainly powerful and an insanely deep and interesting character. But he isn't as powerful as most of the internet seems to think.
