I would be a fundamentally different person without this show. It's what got me into comics and storytelling in the first place. It's got problems, but I'll proclaim my love for this series until my dying breath. Also, this show's portrayal of Spider-Man himself really holds up (at least the quips and voice) and very much reminds me of the way the character was written in the 70's and 80's. Spectacular is the best adaptation of the web-slinger, but I'm really glad I have both.

While I agree this was great for its time, one thing that bothered me in later years was how they depicted Peter Parker, age wise. I don't buy that he's a college freshmen in this, considering they chose to depict him as a man who suspiciously looks like a bodybuilder in his mid to late 20s. It's a strange choice, considering when this story is supposed to take place in Peter's life.

That line about seeing a more sophisticated version of something you love making it harder to appreciate what came before...that is so true for comic fans in general, especially with these live-action properties. Happened when Garfield was cast and people started to shun Maguire, and with Holland, now both Garfield AND Maguire get shunned, as if there's nothing valuable in either the Raimi or Amazing films. Heck, I'm willing to bet that by the time Holland is recast down the road and there's a fourth live-action Peter Parker on the big-screen, some will turn on him as well.

The reason why Gargan can't take the Scorpion suit off is that he has a psychosis. He could very easily take the suit off but he is under the delusion that he can't, that it's a part of him now. Which is a pretty horrific concept to put in a kids show. I know this is never stated in the show, but it's portrayed like that in the comics. Given that this is a saturday morning cartoon, it's obvious why that angle isn't explored further there, but it is subtly implied

It has tons of issues, the recycled footage being the biggest one, making the show impossible for me to get lost in now. It's true what you said about how I viewed this show when The Spectacular Spider-Man came out, I was still young when it premiered and had watched repeats of TAS for years around two years before it was on, and I thought TAS could never be beaten. *SPOILER ALERT FOR SPECTACULAR* After I watched that episode of Spectacular, where the black suit took control of Peter's sleeping body and beat the Sinister Six in an epic fight, that was when I knew, without question, that it was the definitive Spider-Man show for me.

And for me, even though I love, love, love the short-lived Spectacular Spider-Man: Animated Series, it is kinda/sorta painful for me to re-watch the pilot episode of Spectacular Spider-Man because I like Peter Parker pretty much immediately and I really feel for him when Sally Avril turns him down with extreme prejudice. And I feel a combination of emotions during that moment. I feel emotional pain, I feel embarrassment for Peter, I feel ashamed for Peter and I even feel a little afraid for him, for a split second because I think accidentally hitting on somebody else's girl of a close-knit group of self-proclaimed "cool kids" would give them all carte-blanche to gang up on Peter Parker and really start to take him to task and generally harass him for what he tried to do out of ignorance.

Eamonn Deane If there's one thing I've learned in this lifetime, it's that everybody on this planet has an opinion. And often times it's a different opinion from your own. And even if you become part of a consensus, there might be a certain percentage of people out there who will probably tell you that you're just jumping on the bandwagon or you're a band-wagoner. And it's kind of a hard thing to consistently disprove, because people are going to believe whatever they want to, and you can't stop them from doing that. So, most of the time I often think to myself, "Why bother, trying to even be self-conscious about myself. People are going to believe and speak about you in whatever way they want to, behind your back or behind closed doors. You can't control what people think about you, so, why get so bent out of shape over your public image and how people perceive you?" (I know I went on a bit of an irrelevant tangent there but I just had to get that out of my system.)
@BrightbBurns1985

Eamonn Deane You know, people will often say the same thing about Mark Hamill as The Joker or they'll even say the same thing about Kevin Conroy as Batman. But at the end of the day, they're just voices. It's not like they had to perform in front of a big-budget film production camera, in live-action at the behest of a relatively inexperienced director or even somebody making his or her directorial debut. And I mean, I want to say that I absolutely cannot disassociate Dana Delany from her voice-recording studio sessions as Lois Lane back in the mid-to-late-1990's but that would be very disrespectful to Teri Hatcher. Who had to be the first live-action Lois Lane on Television, again, since the untimely demise of the late, great, George Reeves. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, look up the words "George Reeves" and "The Adventures of Superman" on the internet. I mean that's one of the internet's many purposes....Educating you a little bit on pop culture phenomenons.)

I agree. I think they are way too harsh on this show. Like you said it isn't perfect. It definitely has its share of flaws but I don't think they are as big of a deal as Cap portrays them. For example the whole censorship issue. It is annoying at times and I wish they didn't have to deal with it but I don't think it's that in your face unless you seriously look for it. Like Cap said he didn't realize Spider-Man never threw a punch until Eric pointed it out. You really have to notice most of it. Obviously excluding shit like Morbious, though it honestly didn't bother me that much. I don't think he gives the plot threads enough credit. I thought especially the second season did a great job at bringing all these heroes and villains into the mix in a way that made perfect sense as the plot line progressed. All I'm saying is that sure the show has flaws but it also has a lot of great things going for it.

The one thing I will kind of meet Captain Logan, half-way with, is the way the Fox Kids Show had "developed" the "romantic relationship" between Mary Jane Watson and Peter Benjamin Parker, (I heard him say his middle name was 'Benjamin' at the very beginning of The Spectacular Spider-Man) and if you compare the relationship to said couple in the '94 cartoon show to their relationship in the Sam Raimi "Spidey" Trilogy, you really can't distinctly say that one is technically "better" than the other, can you? Literally, the only difference is; the 1994-1998 "animated show" had FIVE SEASONS to really sell and make us "believe" in their romantic entanglement and they definitely didn't really do that. And the early-to-mid-to-late 2000's Spider-Man Trilogy actually had less time to sell us on their relationship and somehow that virtually made it worse because Sam Raimi couldn't make every second count for something and give us the "Definitive" Spider-Man/Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson relationship, and some people are still waiting for that. But as for me, I've given up all hope of that becoming a reality outside of the various comic book iterations.

Well, I think my very very FIRST ever introduction to Spider-Man when I was in kindergarten in the late '90s besides toys, I remember watching on TV "Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends" which had an episode dedicated to Spidey's origin (him telling it to Ice Man and Firestar) and it was 100% faithful to the original comic, but then I was overtaken by the Pokemon craze. Eventually 2002 came along, age 8, and I saw Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man movie. And because of that, they gave re-runs of this show on television. I left Pokemon and other 'anime' stuff and got into Spider-Man and superheroes. The first Raimi movie was my introduction to spiderman when it first came out, and then I remember buying a VHS of this series that had a random collage of episodes. If I remember correctly, each episode stood on its own and didn't leave off on a cliffhanger that left me confused. It actually was a good introduction to the series since it had episodes like Spiderman losing his memory and being saved by a little girl (Which thinking back, was a really dumb and cheesy episode, but also included things like the origin story and even the introduction of Madame Web. It was also my introduction to Doc Oc before the second movie came out.) In fact, when I was a kid, I thought that this series was adapted from the movies since the VHS I had included the introduction of the Green Goblin. Although I was confused why Spiderman confused him for someone named the Hobgoblin, so I knew that I was missing something and had to watch more of the show. This show is clearly not very good, but it also shares a place in my heart for introducing me to some of the things from the spiderman lore.

I got into Spidey via Spectacular Spider-Man, which even on multiple rewatches, is obviously superior to this show, but I did a recent watch-through of 90s Spidey, and its truly a gloriously cheesy affair. Yes, a lot of plot lines are really dated, and the acting kinda hokey at times, but its obvious that everyone involved truly loved Spider-Man, and it shows, since everybody’s having a lot of fun, and most of the plot condensing and reworking from the comics, especially compared to the 90s X-Men show, which is horribly dated and really struggles to tackle so many different X-Men storylines, and frequently adapting them to death and stripping them down so much they end up anemic. Always felt X-Men: Evolution did a really good job, albeit with a touch of an awkward first season (high school shenanigans), but once season 2 comes around, it gets a lot better. Except that weird episode where they ripped off The Craft... that was weird.

This spidey show may not have aged well and I'll watch it for nostalgia but this alone with the 2 rami movies and the ultimate comics made me fall in love with the story and the character ever since.

If you're taking request, then I suggest you check out Green Lantern: The Animated Series. But if aren't a GL fan, then I'd say Beware the Batman instead. Two underrated shows in the DC library.

This is quite exciting! I have a lot of nostalgia for this show, I got caught up in it around the first Raimi flick and that was a great movie/cartoon combo for 6 y/o me. I found the X-Men stuff and dug it more later but I'm really not sure I would've without Spider-Man. Good birthday present for me, this Rewind!

I know this show hasn't aged the best, but I don't think the censorship was that bad. Honestly it never seemed worse than any other mainstream cartoon.

I'm kind of in the same boat as you are Captain Logan. One of the first few episodes I saw of this series involved the symbiot and venom, I was very taken with the idea (i was sadly very into the 90's extreme and edgy pop culture explosion) and immediately assumed he was spidy's biggest, baddest, best and main foe. Though to be honest the fact that he was at the end of the intro for EVERY EPISODE probably didn't help. I was a little disappointed to find out he only really appears in about 4 episodes lol

Spidey actually does throw a couple of punches. He punches Scorpions tail in Sting on the Scorpion, in the Neogenectics Nightmare final nightmare when he gets his youth back from vulture he attacks Scorpion with a shoulder block (I'm counting it) and then runs up to scorpion and punches him in the face (He even attempted to punch the Scorpion when he first loses his youth), he Clocks "The Spot" in the face very cleverly by punching one of his portal holes that has his fist connect with the Spot's face, leading to his phrase "That hit the spot!". When he's fighting Green Goblin on his glider after Mary Jane went over the bridge and he thought he was dead, you can see Spidey throwing a bunch of punches at the Goblin. In partners in danger when Tombstone tries to escape the prison, Spidey breaks into the prison and has a pretty decent fight sequence against the guards. Judo throwing one, back elbowing another, then doing a pretty cool split kick to two coming at him from both sides. See the problem with this show in terms of physical action was that Spidey was not allowed to make physical attacks with his fists.

I think you're missing the point here. No one in the entire series ever gets punched in the face, except maybe The Spot, which was immediately played off as comedic.

I completely agree that I always associated Kingpin as a Spider-Man villain. After all, there's also a lot of early Spider-Man comics where Kingpin and mobsters were the villains. Although we'll never get it, I'd love a Spider-Man movie where he goes against the mob. All of, like Silver Mane, Hammerhead, Tombstone, and Kingpin. That'd be so bad ass.

Also, the way that most audience members felt for the Coen Brothers big screen adaptation of No Country for Old Men, based on the Cormac McCarthy book of the same name...Where audience members practically "hated it" because Josh Brolin's character was taken out by a Mexican Drug Cartel off-screen and we just see the complete aftermath of that...is pretty much how I feel about The Spectacular Spider-Man: Animated Series. I really wanna see characters of "Spectacular" finish their arc. You wanna see me speak in intellectual terms, "Finish your God damn story arc!" The 1994 Spider-Man series may not have had a "great ending" or even a "flawless ending" but at least it had an ending. Spider-Man Unlimited was so bad, and they didn't even explain how MJ came back right away that it might as well be ignored and forgotten by the hands of time and future generations, entirely.

You know, a thought just occurred to me is anybody familiar with that comic book superhero documentary called, "Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked"? Because in that documentary they eventually talk about the Comics Code Authority and the 94' Spider-Man show struggled with the censorship surrounding it so much, you'd think it was actually made by the Comics Code Authority, years and years after they were disbanded.

The censorship also reminds me of a Idea I have: a family friendly cartoon (I am not using "kid's show" because that is used as a excuse for lack of effort) with characters that homage, satirize, and pay tribute to characters from R rated/mature material that are self aware of the fact that some of their traits are being toned down or removed to be in a cartoon.

You know, when we finally get to the end of 2017. Specifically the time of year either around or slightly after Christmas. I think I know what to expect from Captain Logan now. Whenever he finally gets around to reviewing "Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life" like he told me that he would in the KZitem comment section of one his videos...What I've come to expect now is maybe Eric Holden helping out with the creation process of the vid. (That's to be expected since they both live somewhere in Kansas now, under the same roof.) And maybe now, Cap will critique a few aspects of the film that most laymen viewers of the 1946 classic, would probably overlook since he sees everything with that analytical lens, he seems to view most of the world of pop culture phenomenons through.

These are just some random musings I have about the show and this top 10: My preferred viewing order for the show is as follows; Season 1, The Insidious Six episodes, skip the rest of season 2 because it's all garbage about mutation which is are the kinds of Spider-man stories I can't stand, watch all of season 3 since that's the best season by far (well except for the Rocket Racer episode), the Tombstone, Black Cat and Green Goblin episodes of season 4 and the wedding and finish with six forgotten warriors from season 5. The best example of the censorship is in the episode "Turning Point" (which also happens to be my favourite episode of the entire series) where the Green Goblin fights Spider-man. Spider-man: You? I thought you were... Green Goblin: I'm not. But you'll soon be! Obviously the word that was censored was dead but my brother and I still love making the joke about filling in the censored word with funny verbs like "a brony" or "Willem Dafoe". That Carnage "MAN" joke really got me. So did the "FELICA" joke. Another weird censorship thing is that they changed the name of the villain team from Sinister Six to Insidious Six. I don't know why since I don't think Sinister is really that scary of a word. This is probably one of my least favourite versions of Doctor Octopus. Unlike the comic version where he is one of Spider-man's three arch enemies (the other two being Venom and Green Goblin) this Doc Ock seems like a random throwaway villain. Most of his stories either have him work for Kingpin or just not have a lot of presence. His costume is also really dumb with muscles and body amor which spits in the face of my preferred Dock being overweight and wearing a trenchcoat. Dr Landon is such a random character. As far as I know he doesn't exist in the comics and was invented for the show because I guess Batman Forever had just come out. I did not like making Kingpin the main villain. This is mostly due to the fact that I much prefer other crime boss Spider-man villains like Hammerhead, Tombstone and Silvermane who are all more distinct and interesting than Fisk. I also always saw Kingpin as more of a Daredevil villain though that's mostly because of when I grew up (funnily enough another Daredevil villain, The Owl, is featured in the show's second season). The problem with Kingpin is that he is a very boring design and in a show full of Goblins and Alien people making the main villain just a fat man in a white suit is pretty lame in comparison. I'm really interested in seeing your second part since there are episodes from seasons 3 and 4 that I feel are underrated and I'm curious to see if you included them.

It seems that melodrama it something that modern superhero TV Shows had inherited, but at least Spiderman melodrama was goofy and fun, modern heroes TV Shows (excluding Smallville) have the melodrama but not the payoff for investing in the character development, Smallville had melodrama but it was more tune down and become even less after Lana Lang left, but it seems that shows like the derived from Mavel, like Agent of SHIELD, and DC like Arrow, Flash and Supergirl is always constant hit, after hit, after hit, after hit, with no payoff whatsoever.
