The roomette is a wonderful way to travel for one or two, and the separate dressing and shower area is much larger and cleaner than expected ( plenty hot water and clean towels ). Meals hot from the kitchen included and served on white, linen tables. What a way to travel...don't miss it.

Thank you for highlighting the lounge. When I took my first trip from Cleveland to Sacramento last year, and had a 4-hour wait in Union Station until the Zephyr left I wondered who the lounge was for. Now that I've reserved my roommette it feels good to know that I can have a nice and comfortable place to relax in the meantime.

I have friends about your height who stayed in a Superliner roomette, and did OK. I can stretch out as the bed is about 6' long, but taller folks will need to sleep with legs bent. I believe that ALL beds on these trains are the same size, even those in the full sized rooms. I have never heard anything from occupants of adjacent roomettes, snoring or otherwise, as the 'sounds of the rails' masks most low level noise that might otherwise seep through. You are more likely to hear the rain horn.

youtuuba - After a few delays, life happens, husband and I are leaving on our first Amtrak Adventure Dec 5, 2017 - Chicago to Vancouver via Texas Eagle, Coast Starlight [with bedrooms] and Cascade - to visit friends for the holidays. Flying out of the USA with CHF/PE and dealing with trying to get a small 'just in case' oxygen maker past TSA was a nightmare last March. The Amtrak CSA that booked our trip said as long as I have documentation taking the thing along would be no issue so BRAVOS to Amtrak! Your videos are very informative, very well done and provide invaluable information to Amtrak Newbies!! Thank you for mentioning the car attendants, especially the tipping issue. At one point in my life I owned a B&B in Florida and the policy was for guests to use the tip envelope in the room and leave it with the desk when checking out if they didn't see their room attendants to ensure the person got it. Also I assume most Amtrak travelers would know to add at least restaurant server tips to the overall tip for the car attendant if meals were requested delivered to the room.

Yes, but Amtrak has two kinds of sleep cars; Viewliners (single level) and Superliner (two level). Viewliners mostly run each of Chicago while Superliners run mostly west of Chicago and on the City of New Orleans. Tunnels and bridges to the east are not always high enough for the tall Superliners to fit under. It seems that Viewliners may be older, and I prefer the wider seats in the Superliners, and also no toilet smell in the roomette!

Very informative video, especially for those who haven't ridden in the sleeper car but would like to. In Portland, OR (where I travel to frequently), the Metropolitan Lounge is a little smaller, but nice. And is only used by sleeper car passengers. There are coffee & hot water dispensers, but no soda machines. Instead, there's a mini refrigerator stocked with soda, juice, bottled teas and water. Haven't seen any snacks in there, but there's a newsstand in the main hall that sells snacks and lunches.

My train did have WiFi in my roomette. It was not super fast or anything, but it did the job for me. Also, on my particular trip, meals were free to all those who were staying in the sleeper cars. The attendant asked that we make reservations for meals in 15 min intervals so that everyone could get chow in a somewhat orderly fashion. The food was actually really delicious. I was shocked in that regard. It was a fantastic and fun trip traveling by rail and seeing the country. I just wish it was less expensive.

I recently travelled Amtrak and had a roomette on both trains. The video helped me decide to take my scanner and gps which really enhanced my experience. In my opinion, a roomette is fine for one person. Two adults can probably be ok for one night. Any longer than that, I would say a regular bedroom might be a better option. One adult and one small child might be ok for more than one night. There was no dining car on the Capitol Limited. In my estimation, this is a ‘miss’ by Amtrak. The food provided to sleeper passengers is limited in choice...especially breakfast. Other than the diner, the trip was great! The metropolitan lounge in Chicago was a great benefit! Thanks to Youtuuba for the excellent info...my trip was better because of it !

Tyrus Hillery, I use several different models of Garmin "NUVI" GPS, all wide-screen versions. I use the windshield suction mount that comes with the GPS. But something important that you might need to buy separately is the 'wall wart' AC power adapter intended for use with the Garmin GPS. I have found that you cannot run the Garmin in navigation mode when connected to just any old UPS power source (it would want to go into 'update mode' if you tried. So if your GPS does not come with an AC supply that can be used to power the GPS while in navigation mode, then buy one from Garmin.
