It’s like you have a new car with a new paint job. Nice work!

Love the yellow Cam, nice job. I think it shows off the Carbon better than the green.

Looks good! I've thought about doing mine, but I still love the white with black accents...

@SS OFFSHORE - the stormtrooper look is great, I had a ton of compliments when it was black/primer. Thinking that will be a future color option for me.

So is Plasti-dip the answer because it's DIY-friendly, or because you like the end product better? And I'm assuming no color sand and clear coat. It's more for the ability to change your mind every couple of years?

@Bauer Limited Production - I expect my body to continue distorting/cracking/popping until it's been seasoned, so no sense in painting the body only have the fiberglass open up as it's seasoning. The dip let's me age the body without worrying about ruining an expensive paint job. I like that it's DIY friendly, inexpensive, and allows me to try out several different colors before committing to a "real" paint job. I like it so much that I may never do a real paint job - I spend too much time worrying about swirl marks on my daily driver I'd hate to be obsessive with the SLC too. No color sand or clear coat, shoot the dip, let it dry, then you're done. It's got orange peel for days but it doesn't bother me. At about $400-$500/paint job (depending on color and complexity) I could probably do ~10 different dip jobs before being on par with a real paint job. Of course, side by side, I think a real paint job would look better than dipped.

@@CamThai you're overthinking it! I've painted lots of 'glass bodies....the paint flexes with the body. Further, you can include a flex additive if you're worried. That's what paint shops (and OEM's) do for urethane bumpers. However, I do understand not wanting to worry about the paint. I once built a perfect--PERFECT Ducati 888 with carbon bodywork and a custom paint job. My last act was to put a small scratch with a screwdriver on the lower fairing. There, no longer perfect! It's OK to drive it like you mean it now...

BTW, I've got a "play" shop in San Marcos. C'mon over if you're in the neighborhood and I'll show you some carbon and painted composite panels.

I was thinking about going with DYC paint for my Z. How is the texture? is it smooth or rough? How many times a month do you go canyon run?
@CamThai
5 жыл бұрын
@sickturtle13 - plastidip is a very user friendly product. Since it’s DIY the results will depend heavily on your abilities - my first time out, the finish was decent. This time around I think it’s better (I also upgraded my gun). But I’m sure in the hands of a more experienced person it would be still better. It’s still bumpy to the touch but a coat of dipcoat makes a huge difference to feel and to a lesser degree texture (feels smoother but not necessarily smoother). Dip will never lay as flat as paint unless you step up to autoflex which is their pro formulation. I do canyon runs 2-3 times a month.

Can you please let me know what sprayer setup you are using? Thanks!
@CamThai
4 жыл бұрын
@Jon - I’m using the DYC advanced turbine with the TSS ECOTSE spray gun. I used the DYC gun for my first dip job but it was giving me some clogging issues and more orange peel than I was happy with - the ECOTSE is better but my skills are still pretty lacking. It’s mostly a skill issue for me.

7 gallons of "dip" on that car?
@CamThai
5 жыл бұрын
@Gene Mounce - surprisingly, yes! I think it’s somewhere between DYC’s medium and large car kit. The car is low but it’s very wide and long, lots of surface area to cover. I think I could have gotten away just fine with 3 gallons of base and 3 gallons of color but I got paranoid and opened up a 4th gallon of color. Since the car is only primered underneath I want the dip as thick as possible so it’s strong when it comes time to peel.

Do the calipers still match the yelow?
@CamThai
5 жыл бұрын
@Mathijs De Guchtenaere - the calipers are painted “atomic orange” which is a candy orange. I’m not sure how good a pairing it will be to the yellow just yet. Need to finish putting it back together to find out!

Oh man... I am just not sure about the yellow. We'll have to see once it's nicely contrasting with the carbon fiber. As if you weren't conspicuous enough to the cops already! You've got guts buddy!

@The Ripe Fruit - to be honest the green never really did it for me. I’ve been looking for an excuse to change it out so the Labor Day weekend and family going out of town was the perfect opportunity!
