Superman wins due to the era that story resides in. Superman was a major dick during that period of publication. I would not put it past him to break Superboy mentally with his Super Psychoanalytic Powers(reverse psychology).

Here's how I imagine the conclusion: Superman opens the Superboy door and goes inside with Superboy. The two of them use the lead walls and doors to protect themselves from the kryptonite. Then, using superspeed, the two Kal-Els each save one of the LL girlfriends. They do it at exactly the same time, so saving one doesn't kill the other. His plot foiled, Luthor has no choice to surrender. Then, once that's all taken care of, Superboy and Superman come to a new understanding, just as Superboy fades back to his own time.

For Superman, I believe Superboy represented a time when he was more carefree in his youth. And he resented the younger version of himself for being able to still live those fun adventure filled days. As opposed to his adult self needing to deal with Lex attempting to kill him every other week. Jimmy Olsen transforming into a monster of the week. Lois marrying every dude who caters to her need for validation through attention. And Perry White barking at Clark Kent for some reason or another. In short Superman is what happens to most all adults at one point or another... we become jaded with our present and reminisce about that which we can no longer experience, the innocence of youth. And for many of us adults, that can cause us to subconsciously resent that past version of ourselves, who's filled with vigor. And wants for nothing due to our parents paying all of the bills. Also during this time Superman was a DICK! I can't believe I spent time attempting to psychoanalyze a fictional character. Eh...

The character dynamics in Silver Age Superman stories are wild! Everyone seems to secretly hate everyone...including themselves in this case. You could read this as a reflection of editor Mort Weisinger's own personality, as he was allegedly quite the tyrant and bully. Or more charitably, you could consider it Mort and his writers having keen insight into the psychology of kids, for whom every real or imagined slight is a HUGE DEAL.

The one I always think of is DC Comics Presents #14. It was before my time but a copy was in the kids' section of my public library and it was the first comic I ever read. In that one, Pete Ross wants revenge on Superman for stranding his son on another world (and would later be sent to an asylum over it). So Pete manages to summon Superboy from the past using knowledge he had as Superboy's confidante and quasi sidekick (sidebar: the last 50 years have been unkind to Pete Ross and given Lana much of his role). He swaps bodies with Superboy and attacks Superman. I believe this story has a few surrounding related appearances and that they snuck Superboy (or young Clark Kent) into the background of several contemporary issues to foreshadow Pete stalking his prey. Superman initially had cliffhangers and continuity in the Golden Age, warring with the police department and city government. However, his adventures quickly became episodic. It's fascinating to see how Superman started getting serial continuity again from 1959 to 1969. Most related to Supergirl, the Legion, and Lex's reform, marriage, and the death of his family. The Van Benson Lois Lane arc is a rare exception. As the 70s went on, readers got more and more villains (and former friends) bent on revenge for past stories and we got the Vartox/Lana Lang weirdness. Through much of these period, I'd say Elliot Maggin began creating much of his own side of the Superman world, which connected between his novels and comics. Meanwhile, Marty Pasko was doing a lot to nail down Superman's history and canon alongside Steve Gerber, much of it taking a darker tone on retelling. Paul Levitz did a little of each.

Because they are both the same person Superboy cannot time travel back to his own period & is stuck in ‘the present’. They come up with the solution of what happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object and slam into one another sending Superboy back home. Dreams are just random synapses firing off while your brain sorts out various lingering thoughts that went unresolved while you were awake. They don't really say anything about a person other than that these things were on his mind before he fell asleep. The actual content rarely ever makes sense by way of how it functions... unless you're one of those lucid dreamers. Then you retain enough self awareness to force it to make sense, if you so choose, but Superman clearly isn't one of those, else he would have just decided he's going to beat Luthor and save everyone, or better yet get along with his younger self from the start.

Um... But if the red kryptonite was actually time travel, and Superboy died and couldn't be returned to his time, wouldn't time... unravel? At least Superman would be dead, I think. So either way the door is suicide. Taking this approach he should probably choose the door without Superboy, because Superboy gets to go back and all good superman did would probably survive. Or maybe, Superboy going back in time with this knowledge would change the future to Superman's advantage, like not being so angry (haha) and come back to this puzzle of Lex Luthor's with a trap of his own!
