There’s such a disconnect between the supermodels and the Kendall Jenner-Hadid ilk. Supermodels are extraordinary beauties and personalities who made their name in modeling alone; they transcended modeling. Most models of today are not supermodels. Certainly not Kendall or the Hadids. They started in reality TV and basically had their modelings careers bought for them through connections, PR, and plastic surgeries. You cannot even compare them to supermodels. Just watch them on the runway. Boring. Yawn.

Of course there is no mention of Gia Carangi. The fashion industry still don't like her because she could take 'em or leave 'em and that's what they don't like about her. But, Gia was, is, and always will be the ONLY supermodel because she is the one who broke the mold. Before Gia, models were tall, thin, blond. They didn't move. They only gave one look. Gia is the one who changed that. Gia was short, dark. She knew how to move. She didn't have to be posed. She gave attitude. Her pictures were tantamount to works of art. And, ever since Gia, models have been trying to figure out how to do that.

Because they are actually considered the top commercial models and spokesmodels of that time, not supermodels. Supermodels were a different breed all together. The fierce five, Linda, Naomi, Tatiana, Christy, Cindy, were the original and first supermodels of the modern age. But I don’t think we’ll ever see their like, or the heights that the 90’s supermodels rose to, ever again. It was a very specific time, with a very specific culture of that time, and it was literally capturing lightening in a bottle. The rise of social media really marked the end of the authentic, iconic supermodel.

As Carre Otis said, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Christy Turlingotn, Linda Evangelista, and Kate Moss were probably the most famous names we associate with the 90s supermodels. But there were plenty of famous models during the supermodel era, Carla Bruni, Karen Mulder, Tatjana Patitz (one of the OG and still shocked of her early passing, RIP), Shalom Harlow, and Amber Valletta (the latter two being more part of the new wave of supermodels with Kate Moss). Others that could be included in that list are Eva Herzigova, Nadja Auermann, Kristen McMenamy, Stephanie Seymour, Helena Christensen, Yasmeen Ghauri, Carolyn Murphy.

linda evangelista was the best model out of all the names mentioned in these posts where people have no clue about fashion as a cultural practice. Linda was the ultimate supermodel in that she walked better and looked better as a model than the others. It’s not about being “the most beautiful”. Lots of women are beautiful and all of them were in their own way. It’s not about that. That’s only a part of it. It’s about how you present, move, photograph, perform and project. It’s about charisma. She could act and present the clothes the best by far. Linda really epitomised the model of the 90s. She had incredible and dramatic features, and could be both androgynous and very feminine at the same time. 10 ай бұрын
I'm afraid you're mistaken: Catherine Deneuve was the face of Chanel from 1969 to 1977 (period when Chanel was considered a dying brand) and is essentially remembered for her Chanel Numéro 5 fragrance pictures in magazines. She never was a runway model for Chanel. Whereas professional model Inès de la Fressange, during the next decade, as Karl Lagerfeld revived the brand from 1983 on (Inès was hired by him that same year) was completely ubiquitous, not just doing ALL Chanel runways (appearing many times in each show), at a time when fashion shows start being shown on TV and become the staple of popular culture they are today (probably partly thanks to her and her famous showmanship) but also promoting Chanel fragrance COCO through 3 spectacular TV commercials, and being frequently invited to speak on TV as the icon she quickly became. So she truly WAS the original supermodel, not only creating the archetype for the 1990s supermodels, but in many ways outshining them (retrospectively) with her creativity and strong personality both on the fashion shows and about town. As such, she can definitely be credited for playing an important role in the revival of Chanel.

I love how the doc showed how professional and dedicated the art of modeling the originals was. I feel that drive and inspiration lack from the current roster of models today, not all, but some see it as just a way to get followers, and ultimately, I feel it should be a celebration of the designer's work, a collaboration on a vision, a creative dance with the senses and camera. This documentary touched on all of that, and more. Beautifully done.

Could the lower ratings on the Victoria’s Secret tv special have been because so many people don’t watch TV like they used to. We are all on our phones doing other things. My tv only gets turned on from 8pm-10pm for Husband. I catch things I want to watch through other platforms etc. Just wondered if it was because we all just live differently now. 🤷🏻♀️

@@KellyBell1 good point! I feel it would have increased it though, since so many were at home….there may be some other things behind the scenes plus the market share has decreased with brands like Savage Fenty, Skims, and Amazon joining the mix….not to mention the controversy around VS too…

Or maybe even a Cindy? I mean give me a break! she was the top tier! She was the first beautiful face I saw on vogue when I was a child.😊 and Nikki Taylor. Her story was so sad. But she still had her reign.

For the people saying Gia wasn’t big: Gia changed modeling. Before her, it was a cliche with blondes being in the spotlight, and boring poses. Gia changed that. The designers and photographers themselves said it. Thanks and bye.

True. I think that if Gia had been able to work and stay focused and healthy longer, her fame and recognition would have grown. Industry insiders are quick to pay tribute to her. She just didn't live long enough to truly benefit from her influence on modeling and fashion.

I personally agree with the rest of the comments they blackballed Gia like she never existed. The image of the movie that I got was that they only want to showcase the models that made the industry look good. Honestly Ibb bc think that people used to see Cindy and think she was Gia. That period overlaps so well and they look so much alike minus the mole. I honestly think the industry knew that and tried to use the visual to dupe the people at the time into believing it was the same person especially because the internet was not around yet so unless you were privy to Gia and her story you would never know.

For me, Tatjana Patitz wasn't talked about enough, she was also a trend and was in the top 5 of the first supermodels of the 90s. Not enough attention was paid to her, for example, when talking about the making of the Freedom from George Michael video in this film. A bit of a shame, and Tatjana was great.

Ou est Ines de la Fressange?! If you are wearing Chanel, or have in the past, or hope to in the future, you can thank Ines de la Fressange, Lagerfeld's muse in the 80s, for greatly inspiring women to covet Chanel. Her triumphant performances on the runway totally embodied both the spirit of Mademoiselle Coco and the freedom of the modern woman. Her print and TV ads are unforgettable. Inès attitude totally permeated the brand of Chanel and is still there today. Great shorts here of her on YT.🎉

My favorite has always been Stephanie Seymour, such a stunner. She looked good in high fashion, more commercial gigs and everything in between 🙌🏽. I guess that the reason she kind of "got replaced" by Kate Moss in the "Big Six" lineup is that she choose to put motherhood before modelling and she did slow down a bit in the 90's. But she's still one of the best to ever do it in my opinion.

A supermodel is beautiful, educated and she moves with grace to show her clothes. People buy clothing because models know how to show it and sell it. They deserve all the money and so much more. People buy the items they promote, make-up, perfume, or lotion is the job a model does and they get pay well for such reason.

I have a bunch of Top Model magazines from the first issue in early 1994 to about mid 1997. Then In the late 90s I kind of said goodbye to pop culture in general, stopped watching MTV which had become a hip hop and r&b channel with reality TV shows interspersed and models were no longer larger-than-life figures - the heroin chic made many of them look very dull and deliberately ugly. The magic was starting to wane, guess I became too old for a lot of that stuff... But it's fun to occasionally browse those Top Model magazines and go back in time.

How come there is no mention of Gia Carangi, the first 'supermodel' here? Refusing to acknowledge the existence of someone who was so famous in this field, albeit for a short time, just because of her sad life story, renders this documentary unreliable.
