This makes me want a DRZ400SM. Looks way more fun and a lot safer than riding my GSXR600 through canyons.
@DeadmansPoncho
10 жыл бұрын
I have a 400sm, they are fun and quite bulletproof as long as you stay on the basic maintenance. But, they are really heavy and underpowered, plus long distances anything over 150 miles a day is really taxing on the little thumper's and is uncomfortable. I work on motorcycles for a living and while it is a good solid motard, I would look into getting a Beta 450/520 or a KTM 500. Both are plated and can be converted to SM really easily. Only problem is the price.....but such is everything in life.
@cdsmith1990
10 жыл бұрын
SMC419RR Mcinroe What are the Beta / KTM like day to day though? From what I've seen the DRZ is quite reliable as it isn't necessarily a race bike.. I've seen some bikes converted to road use but they're so highly strung that they need services every few dozen miles..
@DeadmansPoncho
10 жыл бұрын
CBRsmithy Just from talking to a few other mechanics and a few people that ride Beta, A lot of people are liking them. I personally have not had a chance to work on one, but I do trust the people I talk to. KTM, a lot of people will still complain that KTM are junk, parts are hard to get, and the maintenance is a killer. KTM use very high quality parts in their bikes and yes, it can be costly to do maintenance on them. But a large bore bike like the EXC500 and RS520 are designed as dual sport motorcycles and the motors are built around the kind of style you would do during a long Dual sport race with a lot of Wide open areas. Now ringing the bikes neck constantly will wear down any motor faster, whether it be a single cylinder, V4, L-Twin, Inline 4 and so on. But maintenance should be a number one priority on your vehicle. You shouldn't rely on the fact the motor may be able to go another couple hours or hundred miles before a service. Yes, I have seen a few guys with CRF450R's converted over to motard and they have plates and lights and everything. The only problem with that compared to a DRZ is, Motocross bikes are designed to do Moto. The stator output stock is not reliable to put a full lighting system on. Also if you look at the gearing, they are way different in transmission and final gear ratio. A DRZ stock gearing is 15FT 41RT compared to a general stock moto bike with around 14FT and 49RT. The gearing is going to be great in tight corners and short straightaways. Also Moto bikes are designed to rev fast and have a very high output (HP and Torque) so the maintenance is going to be needed a lot more often.Plus getting 450's plated can be a bitch in some states. Although I absolutely love true supermoto bikes, In a daily commuter, they are not what I would like to ride everyday to work or do errands. So when making your decision, think about what you are going to use the bike for, if its just putting around town and going to work doing about 80 miles a day, The DRZ400SM is an excellent choice with a few minor mods you can kinda get that pig into a firebreather. If money isn't an issue, go with the KTM500 EXC and slap some 17's on that beast, adjust your suspension, get better brakes and enjoy smiling for the rest of your life. Finally, if you just want to shred around town and like to do regular upkeep on your bike, Convert a Japanese 450 over and shred til your days are done.

SMC419RR Mcinroe Amazing reply dude, thank you! It would be a hard choice to make I think, I'd definitely have to test ride the bikes and see what suits me usage the best. But you're right what you say, any bike should be maintained properly, but I too have seen road-legal CRF450's and the like in the UK, and the owners generally say they're amazing fun for a short weekend, then they're doing full services on them almost weekly.. For me, that kind of constant servicing would take away the fun factor of the bike somewhat. When I've been looking at bikes for sale, DRZ400's in good condition are around £3000, for the same money or a little bit more I can find something like a KTM 640 SM, which I'd definitely be interested in. There are road 'legal' SX's for the same money too, but I think one of those on the road would be pretty crazy!
@ladyeclectic

You don't need a DRZ400SM to do this, you can get any 400/450/whatever dirt bike and put a set of sumo wheels on it. I've seen peeps using two-stroke bikes on the sumo courses and doing a kickass job of it. DRZ's are heavy, even the kicker/E models, but they do come from the factory kitted with the 17" wheels. I swear if Yamaha made a WR450X, I'd be ALL over that baby!!!

An observation from somebody who was into racing up to 125cc (& basically living on Honda's for my teens-twenties) back in the early to mid-80s; this generation has sorta grownup w/ the 4strokes. None of this seems correct without 2strokes is my initial reaction after consuming 15min of this footage. It's got a similar feeling as Indy500 racing does vs F1 to me.

people usually say this about 2-stroke engines all of the time. 4-stroke has good sound, i know. i would know since i got a daytona anima 190cc on in my everyday transportation of choice. there's a guy in the area driving a dual sport 2-stroke down the road, i felt nostalgia to smell the exhaust of the 2-stroke and the high rpm, buzzing down the street.
