I'll never get tired of a Wurlitzer piano through a chorus pedal sound. It's instant Supertramp.

Thanks for the reply - it’s clear to me now that it’s the twin reverb being used that affects the tonality so much, as the rest of the set up I’ve tried. For any major repairs I use Supertramps own wurli repair guy (David Wiseman) and I’ve even discussed this with him. I honestly don’t believe the reeds are set up any differently - so I believe Roger used something unique or say, two CE-1s through a twin reverb amp [unknown model] although I have tried that too, albeit through my Roland JC120 ... that’s effectively three CE-1s! Maybe the JC is simply too warm a sound?... I know they used Boss CE-1s as I have seen them in a concert video of the Band. I’ve watched him turn down the reverb to increase the chorus density on the Logical song (my set up does that also), and I too have a 200 model (which they did use, as you can see no screws in the pianos facia). Interestingly the CE-1 only has an “intensity” knob and most chorus pedals since have rate and speed, even Boss’s most recent release which emulates the CE-1 & CE2. Next step for me .... mmmm.... hire a decent twin reverb I guess and test out the theory. Thanks again for the reply - good playing (although a couple of chords are incorrect). Maybe I should upload the song using my set up - not a utube uploaded though, no idea how to do that ! THANKS AGAIN

Trust me Ive tried that and a lot more... I can get close but it’s not right. Trying to establish if it’s the amp. by asking this guy exactly. I have tried using semi delay, drivers, flangers, phasers.... no luck. Even spoke to the man who tunes Supertramps Wurlis (who tuned mine a few times)... no joy. Help...

So long ago but lets see if I remember. This was a wurlitzer 200. I went through the MXR Stereo chorus into a blackface twin reverb reissue. Recorded with a Shure SM57 into a Firebox Firewire interface into a Macbook with Garbageband. Turned the bass and mid down and the treble up! That's it! The rest of that "sound" has to do with the voicing of the keyboard. The reeds on the bass end were voiced evenly and slightly closer to the pickups. I've still never had a wurlitzer that sounded exactly like this, but close! Go to Bandhub and search for my username "wurliguy" and there are a couple supertramp songs on there recorded the same was as this one was recorded. It's a different wurlitzer but I voiced it pretty darn close to this one...

can you share your effects pedals and amp. I have a Wurlitzer 200, a RolandJazz 120 amp, the MXR shown and Boss CE-1 (plus many others) and don't get close to your final effect. Ten years searching for Hodgsons sound and STILL trying!!! Many thanks.

Wow, with all that gear you still havent found the tone? Try this: Wurly with no tremolo / Roland Jazz clean, with no chorus effect on (maybe on but with a veeeery subtle effect) / boss CE1 and or MXR chorus: try to get a heavy depth sound but with a fairly slow rate, you dont want a tremolo effect in the chorus but more of a flangy one. Hope it helps!
@joaquinvelazquez913

It must be the tuning of the Wurly then... or the miccing technique they used, because i read a post where it suposedly explained how Logical Song was recorded, and that was it. Wurly, boss CE1 and something more. I think the wurly was split into 2 amps and one was clean and another had the chorus effect. IDK :(

If you're talking about the effect that makes it sound different, it's a chorus effect pedal.

Very good, put phaser to your piano, no chorus.

Hahaha not al all. Rick and Roger always used the Wurly clean, and then by Breakfast they started using the Boss CE-1. Never a phaser. Only one time, in the song Casual Conversations.
@EphemeralProductions

nope. incorrect. For pretty much all the Breakfast in America songs, they used chorus effect on their Wurlitzers.
