What great year 1979 was in music, what good album Breakfast In America (Supertramp), it was top selling album in the US. Followed by Bad Girls - Donna Summer, and Minute By Minute - The Dobbie Brothers...the there was Damn The Torpedoes - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, In The Heat of the Night - Pat Benatar, In Through the Out Door - Led Zepplin, 52nd Street - Billy Joel....etc etc..

I would suggest next to go back to their breakout album "Crime of the Century" and listen to any or all of the tracks on that LP. "School", "Rudy", "Bloody Well Right" and on you go!! Great band! This one is from their Breakfast In America LP! A few hits came from this album, and I dig most of those songs! One song comes to mind that I may have mentioned before, but I really don't recall! It was a hit around the same time frame as this one! It's The Devil Went Down To Georgia by The Charly or Charlie Daniels Band! It is a pretty interesting song, and you'll know why if you decide to listen to it! Happy New Year, and I hope 2024 is leagues better than last year for everyone! Goodbye strangers!

What always impressed me about this was that the entire song is one long buildup to that epic ending guitar solo. And the anticipation of that ending gets stronger each time you hear it. Which gives it a kind of sexual connotation -- appropriate, given the subject.

Not just a nomad, but a player... no commitments, one-night stands. Goodbye, Mary, Goodbye, Jane, etc. Love the verse, "Now some they will, and some they won't, and some you just can't tell; and some they do, and some they don't, and some it's just as well." About as cynical about picking out who to spend the night with as it gets.

I always thought of this song as the guy is kidding himself that he never has to get close to anyone. Just a life of one night stands. As far as hearing it somewhere, it was probably sampled by someone in the 90's like many great tracks from the 70's were. The song was most likely forgettable except for the sampled part that stuck in your head.

Hi Angela great reaction as always! Supertramp truly were one of the "Super Groups" as they called them back then. Literally every song they did was a hit. Hey I have a theory as to why you may have think that you have heard that falsetto "Goodbye Mary......part. Could it be that they actually sound VERY similar to the Bee Gees? (in my opinion anyway).....just a thought ha ha ha! ❤from Canada!
