I am retired now, but I once was an art teacher for lower grades. I was picky about construction paper, tissue paper, scissors, pencils, pencil sharpener, crayons, colored pencils, pastels, glue. I would pick a different brand and be using all year. It does make a difference with young children on up to high school.

Umm, yeah, those kids reaching those milestones, a combination of pride and sorrow. Mine are in their 40s so I know that feeling. As for art--I'm picky about all things watercolor; paint, brushes, paper, art journals. Anything else is pretty much anything goes that's on sale. I've collected quite a few WC palettes and am now down to two favorites. Once the quarantine is over I will bring those that don't bring me joy to my art club where we raffle off donations each month. Stay well and safe. Thanks for all your videos!

I've become picky about adhesive. Primarily a papercrafter, and when I started making cards I was just using cheap snail tape because that worked fine for scrapbooking, but I started finding that the cards a made a year ago were coming apart, as well as some paper purse gift bags. Now I am a die-hard ATG tape (w/ the pink gun) and Art Glitter Glue person.

I ran out of my usual adhesive, so into the tried and not true collection of glues. Tried a particular one and after 2 layouts of it buckling fairly substantial paper, I tossed it into the trash and that felt so good! So, picky about adhesives, and ordered online. Picky about lighting, and getting things cut or placed straight. I will see a variant of 1/32nd of an inch immediately after I adhere and press it down. Fun fireside Chat, Ms. Lindsay, thank you!

Loved this video as I do all of your videos. I like hearing what your are picky about as well as not picky about when it comes to art supplies. I learn so much from you and always look forward to watching. The fireside chats were before our time, but I remember my parents talking about them. I do remember Jimmie Carter having a few as well as Reagan! That ages me considerably. I find more things I am picky about than not. I am picky about paper trimmers and am still looking for the perfect one. I am picky about my base weight card stock, and I am picky about adhesives, both tape and glue. I want a glue that doesn't take long to dry, flows well, and doesn't wrinkle or mar the paper surface. (don't want much do I!!) I like a tape that adheres well and applies evenly and easy to manage. I am a card maker at heart, take a great deal of time designing and creating my cards and I want them to look nice. So, I continue to search for the perfect of these three things. I am not picky about layering weight papers, or brands of stamps, prefer clear stamps or unmounted rubber ones, and ink is a toss up, but I stay away from Distress Inks. I have spendy inks and cheap ones, and like both as long as it does the job. Staz-On is my permanent ink of choice.

I was having trouble finding a good paper trimmer until I got a guillotine trimmer - LOVE it! I'm not picky about a lot of my craft supplies in a way. My adhesive is whatever works as long as it's NOT a tape runner - I can't use them to save my life. The runners with dots or squares are okay - but NO tape.

I really enjoy these chats. Maybe a fireplace and mantle painting would be fun for a little background piece? I'm not real picky about supplies, but I want a glue to do its job. I made Christmas cards years ago and I have a feeling they were puzzles by the time they got to people. I had a doctor's appointment after spending the first few weeks of stay at home with my husband ( a non-crafty, tidy person) and my blood pressure is up for the first time in my life so I started walking in place indoors while I'm doing other tasks. My bp is a little better, but my lungs feel more open than they have so my asthma is better. I laughed about the pants! I'm right with you there! And our babies do grow up, but they'll always be our babies. Thanks for all you do.

i am picky about my trimmer, but not because i get crooked cuts. i like the fiskars sure cut because it has a wire that shows you EXACTLY where you will be cutting, without having to measure. i mean if you wanted to cut on a specific line, the wire tells you where the blade will cut. i love that. i also am picky about the cutting knives, because once iwas using one and it flew off, and just missed stabbing me in the eye! so now i use the cricut one, that is locked in, but i will try the fiskars one that locks too, if it uses a regular blade, because the cricut one needs their own blade because of the housing. love your humor and videos as always!

I love your chats in your down to earth eclectic craftroom. You inspire me. New with me has been with me just over a month, I broke my right arm just below the shoulder (and I am right-handed, of course) so that has made this isolation time extra challenging since I have been limited in what I can do. I have discovered just how much takes 2 hands and is oriented to the right. Even paper trimming! I have been slowly healing and looking forward to mobility with renewed respect for lefties and those who have permanent one-handness. I will be so glad to return to my right-hand, both hand privilege and back to playing with all the stuff in my craftroom. I like experimenting with everything and am always looking for second-hand or clearance/sale items. I hate the tacked on price rise when an item goes from being considered an art supply to a "craft" or scrapbooking one or starts getting carried with one of 'those' brands without any change (an example of that is Yupo, the price of Legion Yupo vs Ranger or watercolour paper of various types). I'm often glad I knew about "art" and those supplies long before I picked up papercrafting and mixed media.

I'm picky about canvas, but not canvas panels or pads. I'm picky about watercolors, as well as watercolor paper, but not pastel paper, as I can make my own gritty surfaces. I'm also picky about colored pencils because, frankly, if I'm going to spend so much time on something I want longevity, but also because cheaper ones cause me more wrist pain. Acrylic paint quality has come to matter because I can't stand the yucky odor of craft acrylics. I admit to being very picky about my phone case, too, preferring a specific look and design. I enjoy trying to make anything work. I limit myself to 2 watercolor sets, two colored pencil sets, 1 of each type of scissors, 1 die cutting macine, etc. In order to get a new one I have to use up or give away one (I prefer to use up because it's more time spent with that thing). I feel like limiting myself and making things work makes me more creative and helps me gain experience. For that reason I'm not super picky. I do tend to purchase fewer but better quality items so maybe that's why. Maybe it's that I'm not anywhere close to a professional artist. :) The one thing I would not want to do without is my Tim Holtz stamping platform. I feel like it's more durable than other brands and I feel fortunate to have one.

Loving these "Fireside Chats". A kind of sub-topic for this video could be "how many of that category of supply do you need?" As an example, I see beginners asking " what's wrong with my card?" Turns out their card is warped and rippled because they used their child's glue paste, or such. Another category is paper. Having the right supply is do the thing that you want (alcohol markers & watercolor paper don't play together well) but without buying tons of different supplies will give you pleasure in your art. I recommend your videos that are primers on supply categories to newbies because it's easy to get overwhelmed with the choices of supplies.

I’m trying to thin my supplies so I’m learning what I love best lately! I am picky about my paint brushes. I have favorite ones I grab consistently. I like the feel in my hand, and I know how much water they retain. I know how fine of a line I can draw with some and how bold with others. And, as with clothing, not all size 2 brushes are the same, neither are 6's, etc. They vary from brand to brand. I'm also particular about my watercolor paper. I'm an Arches fan, although for practice I will use other brands.

The more supplies I try, the more picky I get! 🤣 I think that's because I tend to work mainly in watercolour, though where the quality of the paper and paint actually matters. I've also discovered that a really good quality pencil sharpener can change your opinion of a pencil completely - I got very frustrated about Arteza coloured pencils breaking on me when I tried to sharpen them, but then I got a Faber-Castell pencil sharpener and the breakages reduced significantly! I wouldn't be picky about alcohol markers since I found out none of them are light fast. 😊 I'm not a brand snob, but there is one cheap brand of art and craft supplies (a store brand) that have proved to be constantly trash across the range for me so I won't go near that.

I'm picky about You Tube tutorials and look at me, I always come back to you! My favorite paper cutter is a rotary cutter and mat (I'm a quilter). I use the blades that have dulled from cutting fabric...thankful for a purpose because I have trouble throwing them away. So I guess I'm picky about using what I have, dang it! I am a little picky on ink pads, more about the pad itself than the ink though. Some pads are super thin and I steer clear. I have zero idea about what's good in drawing or painting. So far my work is terrible, so it must be the supplies, right? LOL. I may do lots of spattery galaxy cards with my Daniel Smiths and move on to something else. It's all fun to watch, though. ;-).

Keep after the drawing. If you draw a little bit every day you Will get better, and that will translate to your paintings. Sometimes I think our brains finally just give in and say "Well, she's not giving up on this, so just go ahead and draw the flower like she wants." 🙄 I'm not a "loosey-goosey" painter, I totally find utter bliss in doing detailed work, so I have to work hard to do loose florals and such, but I still try. My "avatar" (for the moment) is one of Lindsey's tutorials she did a couple of weeks ago. It came out alright, enough so I sent it to an aunt to brighten her day. So don't give up. After all, we didn't learn to read in one day, right? We had to learn the alphabet first. 😉

Hi Neighbor! I am learning to be not picky but more discerning mostly because I was raised frugal and hate to toss anything away. I say discerning because I have limited space and I'm starting new with a lot of these mediums. So I rely heavily on KZitem talent recommendations and craft room chats. That said, if anyone is looking for a place for their cast off art supplies don't forget about scout troops, or your local homeless shelters! I am married to the Signo uniball white pens. I buy them now in the box of 10 on Amazon. Tim Holtz small scissors for fussy cutting. Love the big holes for my fat fingers!! I am in love with Arteza! They are making crafting well for the masses affordable. I feel confident buying a big set from them, I feel like it's not going to be a waste of money and will let me know if I like the medium rather than feeling like Eww this is no fun, when really I just bought a really bad quality product. I have never met a sale I didn't like... so it's hard to be picky. My threshold of, am I going too far?, is the look in my honeys eyes. He's so tolerant and supportive despite the fact that he can make no sense of my love of mixed media. The product I am in fear of running out of is clear gesso! I use it as my mod podge, my base and my finish. I do a lot of mixed media. Have an awesome day! Everyone stay healthy and safe! ❤ Laura m 🦋 Bangor, ME

Bye now Oh, I forgot about the picky thing - I buy in the children's areas because it's what I can afford without feeling so guilty. I guess that's a preference too. I do like to watch those who are doing art as second nature. I wish. sigh.

Love the fire side chat. Let's do it again. I'm picky about my brushes when I do decorative painting. I use liners and angle brushes a lot. I'm also picky about the pens I use when I do zentangles; the ink has to flow smoothly and the color has to be vibrant. I love the sweatshirt by the way. :D Thanks

Enjoyed this! I'm not picky about most of my craft supplies. In the past I'll keep using whatever I started with because I never seem to use it up and I dont throw things away! However, I recently got a new stampin up paper trimmer and OMG, cant believe how straight it cuts and it has the scoring tool on the same tool. Fabulous! Also recently bought a gemini jr die cutting machine. OMG I love the electronic cutting, so great for detailed cuts. I'm most picky about adhesive. I've been trying every glue on the market lately. I cant stand using glue that i cant get off my fingers easily. I love ZIP (you can easily rub it off paper too) but it dries out so fast, before the bottle is done. So now i use Art Glitter Glue, fabulous stuff, and FabriTac.

You earrings match your clothes so well=) The topic you've chosen today is a great one - not many artists and crafters are talking about it. I am not picky about glue, gouache, acrylics and mechanical pencils. A mechanical pencil should be just comfortable to hold and be not-too-heavy. On the contrary, I think I am not picky about everything else, I am semi-picky=D. For example about erasers cause to find something suitable for me can be hard. Also, felt-tip pens, I love this material, it is colourful, mess-free, easy to use and can be used as watercolours too. Perfect for sketchbook pieces and BJ. Semi-picky about pastels and crayons in general - sometimes you can get really awful ones, which leave dirty wax with dots of another colour on your paper.

I am not sure if it is on the subject, because you spoke about drawing and painting, but I am very picky about the good quality of yarn I use to my knitting and crochet projects. It is because if I spend a lot of ours to make a scarf or shawl it is much better effect if the yarn is good quality. If not you make the same effort but the final result is not so impressing. The same as for the metal part of earings. Even if the earings are made from paper I like feel good quality ear wire, which is not giving the allergy or pain. Best regards ;)

I'm super picky about paper. As a watercolorist, I want the best. As a cardmaker and scrapbooker, I have my favorite brands. As a preschool teacher, I buy Michaels color cardstock packs for my children - I loath construction paper.

I'm a scissors snob. I love my cutter bee scissors for fussy cutting and I have certain scissors for fabric. I don't have the same pickiness about my cardstock except 110# Recollections for card bases. Ok, I guess I'm a little more picky than I thought. 😜

I love the color you are wearing the earrings especially and sweat looks great - becoming to you. I’m dieting. Lost 6 lbs on WW. I am going back to RE-listen to this. You have been my favorite art teacher and YOU have got me doing so many different art mediums including painting and stamping cards. I would love to do the lemons you posted in gouache as I don’t have oil paints. Happy weekend!

I too am frustrated with blades always coming loose in craft knives. I'll try the Fiskars one you like. Thanks for the recommendation! I'm quite picky about watercolor paper. I haven't yet found a cheap one that I like. I like to paint quite wet, and the cheaper ones can't handle it.

I have not tried a wide variety of arts and crafts supplies; so, can't say I'm picky about any of them. I could say that I am most particular about fountain pens. Of the ones that I have, I like the TWSBI Eco best. I like a fountain pen that can hold a lot of ink and will write right away even if it has not been used in over a week. My Eco fits that bill. It's not even the most expensive pen that I have.
