I agree and ghee (not just clarified butter) is pure fat and shelf stable for quite a long period of time. If anyone out there decides to make ghee out of all that butter they have in the freezer: 1) put it in glass jars to store it; 2) don’t worry about having salted butter to make it from as the salt will be left behind with the solids; and, please do NOT discard the toasted solid bits left behind with that last bit of oil. It’s yummy to fry fish or really anything in. Or, just eat it with a spoon right from the pot if no one is looking. Oh! One more thing: use whatever butter you have. It really doesn’t need to be from grass-fed, organic, free-roaming herds of panda-massaged cattle.

Love Always wins From Lil Giant A comment says there may be a blackout of all social media, Amazon, Netflix, etc. When that happens cell phones may be overloaded and cause a power blackout for about 10 days. That might create havoc for those with health problems. You might try concentrating the goods you have frozen into one place and getting a solar generator to power the fridge/freezer. Other generators work but make noise and require gas or other energy source. Gas powered would need ventilation, like a garage, which would need supervision against thefts.Advises you get an antennae for TV so you can get emergency broadcasts. Small multiple radios from Amazon would allow more communication, especially for emergencies and communication with neighbors.

T Innerste From Lil Giant Sounds really neat. But I have no idea what base rock is. Are you in the mountains? How do you make a hole as big as a rainwater barrel in rock? @@henryvalero9235 well, im in a steep rivervalley in the mountains, baserock is the hard solid rock under the topsoil and the larger broken rock layer. Some people have a few inches and people can go meters before they hit solid rock or huge unmoveable ones. We have a four meter deep fast flowing well, so i would assume thats where my baserock is. The water barrels by me are from one to two meters tall and vary a lot in width and volume. They have a metal ring that clamps shut or are screw top but too big and tight for a racoon to unscrew. You could always make a different lid if yours always have the downspout hole open.

T Innerste From Lil Giant THANK YOU! That was sweet of you to reply. I understand a little bit better now. I have never seen a barrel with a lid, either. I have seen many wooden barrels wrapped with metal bands set under the rain gutter spout in Illinois and Indiana, where my grandmother lived. No lids. Perhaps they removed them, or used wooden barrels intended for other purposes. I will have to check that out. Never know when that kind of info will help. Sounds like really nifty idea. Wonder if would work in soil-sort of like a mud cabin built into the hillside, but your method would be cleaner. I went to Canada around 1993. Studied French at the University de LaValle in their immersion class. Had a hard time getting enough vegetables. Suspect because their soil is very thinly laid over rock. They import a lot of vegetables. Too bad I did not ask more about their agricultural habits. Thanks again. 😉

I'm in the commercial cleaning business. I heard on the news yesterday that clorox disinfectant wipes will continue to be hard to find for another year. But if you know or have a commercial janitorial distributor in your area most will sell to the public. They do carry disinfectant wipes. They won't be the store brand but just as effective. Look for "monk" brand. They are typically sold in large containers. The ones I have are 800 and 1600 per container. And very affordable. There are other brands but I thought I'd mention one so you get a good example. Just a pro tip!

Berkey is fine for those who can afford it and who put all their eggs in one basket. We bought a Sawyer Mini Filter for each family member and stashed one in each vehicle. For base camp (home or away from home) bought the Sawyer PointOne filter and the 5 gallon bucket kit, along with 2 5-gallon food grade buckets. One bucket to receive raw water, the other to receive filtered water. If the need arises, we can filter hundreds of gallons of water, per day, for friends & family. How much can the Berkey process per day? How much can it process before the filters have to be replaced? How many replacement filters do you have on hand? Please do your own research, my friends to make the best choice possible for your needs and budget. PS: We also have other methods, in place, to turn raw water into potable water, if/when the need arises. Google SODIS to see one example. Disclaimer: I'm not associated with any company, in any matter, that produces/sells water sanitation equipment/supplies. Just a satisfied customer.

@@oldtimerlee8820 Just, because one has a Berkey does not mean I have all my eggs in one basket. I have another method of filtering water as well as that, and it is done in a smaller vessel. I thought long an hard before buying a Berkey, and agree they are quite expensive, but they are worth it to me. I am very happy with my purchase, from their 'scratch and dent' dept.. Reality is that I do not need hundreds of gallons of water a day, just enough for my pets and myself. And, I love the taste of the water, it tastes so good it encourages me to drink more than I might otherwise.

@@sjordan7085 Great that you have multiple ways to have safe drinking water! FWIW... I believe it is important to relay this very need to people who might not be aware of "One is none, Two is one". Next, many people cannot afford a Berkey. Period. Again, IMO, it is important to give viable alternatives. Given them the option of choosing what will work best for them, in their circumstances. Continuing.... There are only 2 people and currently (sadly) no pets in our home. So, a Sawyer Squeeze ($25-$30) can easily satisfy our potable water needs. Yet... I live in a rural area where many rely on electric well pumps. There's a small, relatively clean, stream on our property. If my extended family, neighbors and even strangers need water, I'm going to do my best to make it available to them! It's all about choice, my friend. If you're happy with your choice(s), that's great! If it (they) satisfy your long term needs, that's even better.

Whiskey used as a medicine can break up the mucus if out of pharma meds, and onions will treat flu...because of the sulfer. Get a good natural medicinals book. I hope the stores continue to limit items. Slow stocking up is the way to go. Millions of people are struggling more than normal and even buying a weeks worth of their regular grocery items is a financial hardship. People who can afford to just spend extra money right now to look after their own families need to think of other families who are barely able to buy food. This is what I started doing in lieu of brea and having to buy yeast. Five easy ingredients to make flat bread or biscuits. I never have to worry about yeast shortage. take 1 cup All Purpose Flour, 2 tsps baking powder, 1/4 tsp salt, mix with spatula in med size bowl. Add in 3 tblspoons butter, mix it with hands or fork, whatever you method you prefer, till like it looks like beads. Sometimes I forget to take out butter from my freezer, so in a pinch I grate the butter into the bowl. Then put in about 1/3 cup water, maybe a little less. Stir around with spatlua till into a ball.if too wet, add a pinch of flour, if too dry add a drip of water. Divide in half, take each half and divide into 3 equal balls. Then put on baking sheet and flatten with hand. If you want flatbred, take the whole ball and flatten in the baking sheet. I use this as my pizza dough too, but you can just cook it plain which makes a terrific flatbread. My glass baking sheet is about the size of the inside of a medium size microwave or a little smaller than a lasanga pan. I cook it in my little counter top oven, on 425 degrees for 12-14 mins total. I turn it once sometimes, if I remember. Best biscuits ever. This is the easiest quickest bread type to have fresh with breakfast. No kneeding and waiting for dough to double.

A word of caution, if you have to use tissues, paper towels, etc. instead of toilet paper, do NOT flush them. Toilet paper is designed to break down in your sewer pipes. The other paper products are not and can clog your toilet system.

If you’ve saved the containers from the wipes you had, what I did was asked my husband to cut a roll of those blue shop towels to fit the container and just poured some bleach and alcohol down through it. Probably, the alcohol alone would be fine but personally I don’t trust that alcohol or Lysol will actually break down a virus to render it inactive regardless of what the companies claim. The end bit is about the size of a roll of toilet paper. But so far, I just use them in my art studio which was why I had so many rolls in the first place. I’ve always been a big fan of bleach (Javex up here in Canada). If bleach can kill the AIDS virus, it will do for Covid 19 too. Here I always kept a bottle of hand sanitizer at each sink in the house and several in each vehicle. Now I top it up with bleach and shake it around. Am I worried about staining my clothes? Not as much as I’m concerned about that virus. In a pinch, Absinthe (the liquor) is like 77 percent alcohol. Bleach deteriorates in liquid form but you can buy a shock treatment for swimming pools. Although here bleach came back in stock within days and is still plentiful. And don’t forget plastic gloves like the ones they use at Subway sandwich shops. Not dainty but they do remind you to not touch your face. Stay safe folks.

I did know that copper is antibacterial but is there another form I could use. The only thing I can think of is “Coppertox” which was a liquid used for horse’s hooves like 40 years ago. BTW: a silver coin used to be put in the water pail back In The days before running water was installed in every home. Growing up, our neighbours kept a pail of water on a specially designed stand just inside the kitchen door with a “water dipper” hanging from the rim and literally everyone just used the dipper to scoop the water and drank straight from it. Can you imagine!? My brother and I used that dipper too as that family had 8 kids and we spent lots of time at their house. That was In the ‘50’s and early ‘60’s.

I keep Tea Tree Oil around for first aid , First Aid is an area where a lot of folks that prep are weak in. Get first aid supplies - stocked up with vinegar for both cooking and cleaning - as I write this Im dehydrating 11 lbs of frozen veggies, not sure why I never thought to do this so long ago, but doing it now. Love how it frees up room in the freezer. Plan to do a few pounds of ground beef later this week. Typical stuff here was sold or hard to get as else where ( British Columbia) Costco has not had yeast for a few months, perhaps since May, was in there today and they had a very small amount but grab one. Other thing I would like to get but the wife thinks Im crazy as we do not use sugar is to buy 50lb bag from Costco. Would make for good bartering if it gets that bad. they're floating the idea that there is a tin shortage so canners of veggies may have a hard time this harvest in canning the veggies. Lots of misinfo and fear info being put out. We need to God's wisdom and discernment more then ever to determine what we should be buying and not wasting our resources as it may be needed else where. Something that I did, was to purchase 100 pounds of wheat berries. Really don t use flour but figured I may if these get out of hands and at least I can bless others with a pound or two if they need it. Of course I will have to grind it up for them. Mind you, you can just soak the berries and then warm them up and eat it that way very delicious. Also stocking up on spices, if folks have Costco close by large and cheap containers

Excellent advice! When I heard the hurricane forecast for the east coast of the US, I started cleaning out our freezer by canning and dehydrating. This was before the panic of Covid set in. Forecast, which has already been proven accurate is a more active one than usual. It has been and we haven't reached peak season yet. Because of the potential for even more panic, this fall, have been adding to our supply of canned and dried / DIY dehydrated as sales & time permits. Agree "lots of misinfo and fear info being put out". Especially for political reasons. (sigh) We DO need God's wisdom to guide us during these trying times. May God bless your journey.

I have chosen to sew 5”x5” squares of flannel material for toilet paper. I sewed them inside out and turned them right side out. I also stitched an X so they keep their shape in the wash. We used them when we urinated and then gathered them in a container with vinegar and water til we were ready to wash a load. This saved the toilet paper for poop 💩. We easily got through the shortage. I’m also willing to use it for poop if we run out of toilet paper. We would have to rinse the poop and scrub the wipes and then put them in the vinegar water container. It’s the same thing I did with cloth diapers back in the day. It works. We need to think outside the box.
