Not sure what your financial situation is, but if you can put one on layaway, you might consider getting you and the boy a fishing kayak and you'll love it.

A good trip! Some nice catches and then your daughter gets to be the hero at the end.

I grew up on the coast of Northern California, and caught many Starry Flounder! They only stank when caught out of the river when they run the same time as our Steelhead run,but they only went a couple miles past the rivermouth ! Otherwise they were pretty tasty as long as you knew how to skin and filet them, same for big Soles! Starry flounder can get pretty big as well my father and I were fishing off the pier in Santa Cruz once when dad hooked into a Starry so big that even with 50 lb. test he couldn't even begin to pull it all the way in! There were people trying to get a Crab trap under it and runng all over the wharf looking for a gaff hook on a rope long enough to reach it but after about 15 minutes floating on top the fish got a second wind or something as he suddenly started thrashing around like mad and broke the line and swam off! Dad was using squid for bait.. That fish was at least 36" long and people were screaming its a Halibut! But the orange and black striped fins clearly showed it to be a Starry flounder!!!

Hey there🖐️. I was thinking that you should build a catapult using multiple strands of surgical tubing. You should be able to nearly double your casting distance. Building a hair spray powered spud gun would also work well

Casting is probably the most effective method and it works. It’s not necessarily about distance, but good bait and timing as well as holding bottom

I’d take grey cod over pollock n sand sharks any day ! it’s kinda funny how a lot of people consider cod as a lesser fish species around here even though cod has been an extremely important seafood fishery for hundreds of years !
