I recommend you add some jig heads with spinners attached underneath for dirty water or cloudy days. I've been catching a bunch of flounder on them, and the redfish like them too around the Chesapeake Bay. I grew up in Sarasota but now I'm in VA. I miss snook fishin' but we have redfish, flounder and trout here. Plus other stuff. I need to get out on VA Beach and fish the actual beach instead of the inside of the Bay all the time.

Good tip! I will certainly do that. What jigsaw head/spinner/tail combo do you like to use?

Great info, thanks for sharing! What size and brand of inline hook do you recommend? 1/0, 2/0? Thanks!

Thank for the view! I’m glad you liked it. I generally use VMC. However I have also used Mustad, BKK, and Owner and have no complaints. Size depends on the jig, I like to try to match the weight and width to the table hook that was on there as close as possible. For the most part I am somewhere between a 1/0 and a 3/0 for the jigs I use in the beach.

You can't really go wrong with a Kastmaster. I just ordered 5 for snapper season here in the Northeast. Never fails, we called them snapper zappers. (1/4 oz to 1/2 oz.) Thanks for the video.

Hahaha! Snapper Zappers is great! I’m going to have to steal that one. What kind of snapper are you catching and what kind of depth are you fishing?

I just got a 10 foot six rod for some long casting distance for surf fishing would you recommend a Shimano Saragosa 6000?

That’s a great reel! I have one and use it regularly. I actually have a couple, one on my surf rod and another on my big offshore spinner.

What rod/reel set-up you got there?

Rod specs: 7’ long, medium heavy power, fast action. Built for lures 1/2 oz to 1 3/4 oz in weight. Reel: Shimano Stradic FL C3000 series packed with 20# power pro braid and 25# fluorocarbon leader. The rod is a custom rod that I built a few years back. This and another custom 8’ are always with me for fishing with artificial.

those jigs might work in the midwest or eastcoast, but not westcoast claifornia waters

Thanks for the feedback. I was actually getting a lot of comments on a Redit post the other day from fishermen in California claiming the casting jig kills on the west coast. I was told in “Southern California the 1/4 oz to 1/2oz Kastmaster works well for yellowfin and spotting croaker”. I also hear folks fish socal use shore jigs with assist hooks to cut back on snagging seaweed. Curious on your experience though. What do you use and why don’t you think the jigs work for your waters?

How far do you cast?

With the jigs, I cast out as far as I can. With my 8’ rod in this video and a 1 1/2oz jig, I’m probably getting it out there between 50 and 80 yards.
