Please consider re-doing all the benchmarks, as there were clearly windows updates going on in the background, in cinebench you should be seeing around 160cb cpu score, and you got 54. That is a massive difference and should tell you straight away that something is wrong, making this review very misleading as the surface has almost 3x of the demonstrated performance

zollotech But the geekbench score is lower than what it’s supposed to be. Are you on the latest Windows update? Or maybe Windows was indexing files while you ran the benchmark. Be sure to check task manager to see if that wasn’t the case, Also check in device manager whether there are any errors, and run the Surface Diagnostic to be sure.

Yes John Smith, these test results are way lower than all other reviewers out there (like less than half…), so there must be some big task running in the background (which the reviewer didn't realize), which is probably the case for other tests in this video too, which makes it unfortunately pretty misleading for viewers
@Tomconno

Digitalguy I totally agree with this. Last night I scored a 2000 on my single CPU alone, while in the video he only scored a 800. It’s a shame that his video will be misleading people to believe the GO is underpowered when it’s actually his device.

I loved your review so much that I needed to stop and drop a comment. Having recently seen quite few videos on Surface Go, this one is probably the best and most comprehensive review I watched so far. From very picture quality to actually presenting a very clear shot of the tablet and its size in relation to your hands. I really like that you showed the actual device in operation, switching between apps, discussed pros and cons. It sounded very balanced and did not seem like generic sales pitch masked as a 'review' or unfair comparisons to much more expensive models (or opposite). You really showed it device in real life situation and reviewed it from a perspective of an actual user. Very, very informative (more than other bigger channels with a lot more subscribers) I think your video sold me on the device and now it's a matter of saving a bit. Channel subscribed :)

I really still dont understand why people want to push this machine to apps or things that it was not meant to be. This is just a Media consumption and light productivity machine using mobile versions of apps. I know we are trying to justify the price but we just can't haha...If you manage to run those apps and do it constantly your machine will not last 6 months and that's for sure. But I appreciate the time you had in doing this video to finally show them... Take care..

Just to add, if you plan on getting the pen, it is really nice for OneNote or other windows ink apps. On Windows OneNote, you can record lectures and annotate at the same time, then click on your notes to go back to that exact point in the recording. You can also organize all your notes easily and store them in the cloud, and though the iPad does have OneNote, it isn't updated with new features very often. Whatever works for you though!

All in all, I think that the average consumer will be convinced this machine is worse than it actually is because the testing simply did not contain the context necessary to understand why this device "failed" in the given scenarios. I have a laptop with a 7th gen Intel i7 processor with 24gb RAM running on a Samsung 960 EVO 500GB NVMe M2 SSD and I can make Photoshop choke on my system too. I just have to create a gigantic document and use a brush size that is way too large for my system to handle. That is how many of the tests here were conducted. Most of the tests were designed to see how the Go performed when pushed outside of what its hardware specs were designed to handle. Another example, in this video we watch a benchmark performed that leads to the conclusion that the Surface Go won't be any good at video editing, but in another video posted by a KZitemr named Hiker J we watch as he goes about his normal editing process in real time and comes away impressed by the Surface Go's speed in Adobe Premiere Pro. So which one do we put stock in: a benchmark or a real time demo? There are people out there that actually believe that all tasks done by a computer should be able to be done equally well on any computer. That is just not how computing works. This Surface Go was tested in a manner as if that statement were true.

Re upgrading to Windows 10 Pro to get Bitlocker. W10 Home does not have Bitlocker, in that it cannot encrypt a SD card. But.... If you use a Windows 10 Pro machine, your desktop machine, a friends etc you can encrypt a micro SD card and then put it into a Surface (or any Windows tablet running W10 Home) and it will ask for the password and open it. You can choose between asking for the password every time you use the machine or have it open the drive automatically. Everything you save to it will be safely encrypted as well. You don't need Pro to use Bitlocker, just to set up Bitlocker for the first time. If someone steals your machine they can take out the SD card but all your files will be safely encrypted.

More convinced now that I should get an Ipad... I had a surface pro, the larger one, with i5 and 256gb, and could never really get anything done. (I know, I didn't get the top model, but.... didn't have more than 1k to spend on a tablet). My older laptop was better at editing photos and video, thought it was getting really hot, which was the reason why I looked for a replacement. After all, I just got a new laptop, an Asus with i7, 2gb graphics card, and 128 gb - 1 t hard drives. It is super slim and I love it. With the money that I sold the surface, I bought the asus and still had some money left. Now, I'm just looking for a good tablet. Thought of giving the Go a chance, but who makes the same mistake twice right? Conclusion: get a good pc/laptop, get a good tablet. Use each for different tasks :D

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, (and I'm just too lazy right now to check), but a huge part of the performance/throttling issue is how Microsoft has the default power saving setup on the entire Surface line - they are all tuned for max battery life over raw performance for some reason, to get the maximum performance you need to make some simple adjustments to the power saving settings. My Surface Pro 6 had similar issues, keeping the CPU cores throttled well below full clock speed until I unlocked Max Performance mode with a registry tweak.

I think that would be a great device. It's more versatile than the iPad. You have the option of running more programs and it's a perfect backup device. If you had the dough I would suggest that you go with a bse line SP, the i5/4GB model. They are selling those for around $699 and that was the first SP I got and I used it everyday for work and it held up well. If you're already spending $600+ for the SG, you may as well buy the i5/4GB model. I loved my first SP so much that I upgraded to the i7/8GB/256Gb memory bc I wanted to get something a little faster and will last me a lot longer and it only costed me $1,299 and half of that was paid the day I sold my i5/4GB model. Now that's only bc if you really wanted a backup device. I don't think the SG would be a feasible option for you since you want to use it as a backup. If you're just goofing off on the device and not using it for normal daily use then stick with the iPad or buy an iPad Pro 10" with the Apple Pencil. I would not buy the SG. I think it'll be a waste of money bc you won't be happy with your purchase but I know you'll be happy buying the $699 SP i5/4GB version bc that was my first SP and I loved using it.

It may not be a big deal but my iPhone is still at 100% and I had it for 2 months now. And I did make sure to check the health of my Mac battery the official way: by holding down the option key, clicking on the apple logo at the top left of the screen, clicking system information, and then power. There it shows you the maximum capacity the battery is holding. Mine is holding 7232 mAh which is 99% capacity. Can you use the same method to see how much mAh your MacBook Pro 2017 is holding? Is this good as a tablet. I'm looking for a new tablet that can do a little more than just watching KZitem. I got a great price for the 8gb of RAM and 128gb of storage. And the keyboard is also included in the package. Is it good as a tablet ???

That depends on what I needed it for. If you were going to be typing more than drawing then go for the keyboard

how does the chep version (4Gb memory size, 64Gb hard disk drive) compare to the expensive version (8Gb memory size, 128 Gb hard disk drive)... I would be using it for school meaning, netflix during break, and libre office with firefox during lessons? in your video it handled it without a problem, but would the downcrease by hald on the memory size make a difference? because in theory what i will be using it for isnt a hard task?! so is 4 GB of ram enough for libre office and 1-3 tabs of firefox at the same time (firefox would be pages like wikipedia)

Hiya. Planning on getting the Surface Go in place of my old 2014 MacBook Air. Have heard of so-so performance (stuttering, janking and bad loading times) and average battery life for everyday tasks but would u agree? Would like your opinion please. Thanks.

They aren't really comparable. I would say get the Surface Pro if you plan to switch to Windows.

True it’s best to get what you can afford, but the MacBook Air is probably better. I personally like Surface products instead of dell or hp.

Currently, the MacBook is the replacement for the MacBook Air however there is rumors of a new one next month. I just think surface hardware is built a lot better than those other manufacturers. Also, if you have a Microsoft store in your area, they have fantastic customer service

@@superb7319 I'm kind of hoping they'll put the 10nm Ice Lake core i3 with Iris graphics on the upper end model, but that's probably too much to hope for. A Pentium Gold (what's in the current Surface Go) and a core i3 are basically the same processor so it's possible to put a full blown core i3 on the surface Go, especially the Ice Lake version which uses less power and generates less heat than the 14nm versions. But I doubt Microsoft would do that.
@superb7319
5 жыл бұрын
@@03chrisv That won't happen. The TDP of that i3 would be too high. They will move to an m3 processor. Look for news on "Surface go 2" some leaked benchmarks show that the new processor will be an m3. Definitely better than the Pentium gold for sure.
@superb7319
5 жыл бұрын
@@03chrisv Also an i3 is a 15W TDP chip, the Pentium Gold is a 6W TDP chip. An i3 is much better than the Pentium (and also more power hungry).
@03chrisv

@@superb7319 Well the 10th gen Y series i3 has a TDP of 9w so it's not impossible to get it to run on a small tablet, but the m3 might be the better option still.

Comparing the iPad to the Surface Pro or GO is like comparing Apples to Oranges. Windows can do so much more than iOS. I have both the iPad Pro 12.9" and the Surface Pro 2017 and I can use the SP for work bc it's got Windows and Internet Explorer but the iPad Pro doesn't have any apps that I could use for work. I currently have 2 external 23" monitors attached to the SP 2017 and I couldn't do that with the iPad Pro without having a whole bunch of dongles.

Bryan Yu you would struggle to use the GO for work and probably get sacked for doing your work twice as long as a laptop user. Of course an iPad is not sensible in an Enterprise environment and common sense says you would use something suitable. The GO is really only good for casual stuff like media and if that is the case an iPad Pro is a far better choice.

I agree to a certain extent bc I have the iPad Pro 10" and the 12.9" for my wife. All she ever does on her iPad Pro is watch video's and surf the web. The iPad Pros are awkward to hold in your hands. The 10" iPad Pro is probably the best size and if I were still only an Apple fanboy like I was for 10+ years I would say the iPad Pro is the best solution for you bc it's mid range and quite powerful. However, when I traveled a lot I would much rather take my MS Surface Go than an iPad Pro 10" or 12.9" bc they don't do what I would need it to do. Then again, the SP 2017 is compact enough that I can use it while on the go. I don't really see the point in getting the SG unless you only need to type up word docs, surf the web and watch video's. When I go on my business trips, I always take my SP 2017 rather than my iPad Pro bc they are more feasible and makes more since bc I can still get work done while I'm on the bus or in an airplane. SG was probably MS attempt to compete with iPad Pro 10" therefor it only comes with Windows S instead of Home. Even after upgrading to the Home edition on the SG, it lags like crazy and it is not a device I would use for work. I am a Mortgage Loan Processor, and when I am at my home office or working from home I need to have at least two external monitors so I can compare and contrast documents. When I'm on the road, I can still process loans but I'm limited to what I can do and can't do since the program we use to process mortgages uses Internet Explorer 11. That is the only reason why I am no longer just an Apple fanboy but I choose to go with the SP 2017 bc I wanted a compact, light, easy to carry but also powerful enough for me to have 6+ screens running in the background. I don't think that the SG would be able to handle the tasks I would throw at it since it can't even handle autocad-free edition. I would much rather just stick to my SP bc it's a 3-1 device, it's a tablet, laptop, and desktop PC when I am at home and I am using the Surface Dock. I know the SG has the same charger port but it's not fast enough for me to run all of my applications at the same time and not crash. I will not be buying a SG bc I just bought my SP 2017 2 months ago when I decided I wanted to work from home and I had to buy a Windows laptop bc our main program that we use can only run on IE11. So far everything works surprisingly well and I think I made a good choice when I choose to go with the SP. With the Surface Dock, I'm connected to two 23" external monitors and I have my SP as a third screen to use so I can be more productive at home than I can at work. I haven't had one issue with my SP but I also got the i7/8GB/256GB Memory with a 256GB SD Card and a 1TB of OneDrive storage which I use everyday to house customer docs and I'm able to access those docs on a whim if I have to. Bottom line is that no matter what, you can't compare the MS Surface products to the Apple iPad's bc they are two very different and unique devices. The only thing the 10" iPad Pro is better is when you are writing notes down instead of typing otherwise, the Surface Pro/Go would be a better device bc it's much more useful than the iPad. I used to only use iPad and I never ventured out of the Apple Eco system and before I started processing mortgages I was using the iPad Mini 4 with a Zagg Keyboard case. Even then, I was very limited as to the type of work I can do bc I could not run internet explorer on the iPad or the MBP. If I could run IE11 on my MBP 2012 I would not have upgraded but then I would've had to find a way to connect my two monitors to my MBP and from what I have experienced that doesn't work too well. It works well with just one external monitor but using two would require a splitter of some kind. I'm sure it's out there but I couldn't find it. The Surface Pro 2017 was the best decision that I have made. I can use it for personal use and for work. Before, I always had to drive 30 mins to get to work and process loans but now I can just plug the Surface dock into my SP 2017 and viola I can have 3 screens up and running at the same time. Overall, the SP is a better device than the iPad Pro 12.9" and I'll stand by that statement until Apple comes out with a device similar to the SP that can run IE11.

I'm a Mortgage Loan Processor and the company I work for uses a program called LendingQB, which I doubt you would know what it is and that requires that I have IE11 in order for me to use it. I find IE11 very handy but I also use Edge. If it weren't for me having to use IE11 to do my work I would have stayed with my 2012 MBP 13" Retina but it does not run IE11 and that's why I had to buy a computer with Windows 10 and IE11 so I can work from home some days out of the week. I bought the SP 2017 bc I used to love apple's iPad's and I got used to how small the iPad Mini 4 was and I wanted something as small and compact as the iPad's. I remembered that my brother in law had a SP and I asked him if he like his SP and he said "yes" and I asked if it works with IE11 and he said "yes" so I forked up the money to buy the i7/8gb/256gb model and I have never had any buyer's remorse.
