People who say this device is not powerful enough or too expensive really miss the point... This is a niche device with no real competitor (the acer easel is the closest thing but it's much bulkier). This is a device for people that want maximum versatility and can make use of all the poses of the device as well as the pen and touch. It is a perfect decide for designers, arquitects, photographers like me, artists, engineers, etc. The price is justified by the amazing engineering thst went into it and again, by the fact that it stands alone. BTW the version with the GTX 3050 ti is more than powerful enough for everything except 6 or 8 k editing.

Agreed, people aren't seeing the full picture for some reason. I was looking to get either of these two variants: 32GB RAM 1TB M1 Pro MB: $2900 32GB RAM 1TB RTX 3050 Ti SLS: $2700 MB Pro: -Way faster CPU -Better battery life -Slightly more compact -More ports and SD card reader -Speakers provide better low tones SLS: -Slightly cheaper -Slightly faster GPU (can be overclocked) -Touch screen & versatility with modes -Pen support for drawing and notes -Larger game and software library -SSD can be upgraded (not soldered) Did not mention the screen as an advantage for MB Pro because it suffers from motion blur brought by slow response times and severe bloom if you are not looking at the screen dead center. So it's not as clear cut as biased fanboys want to make it out to be, SLS has some major advantages that Macbook just doesn't have (namely touch and pen support). You could get iPad Pro to use as a drawing tablet, but then you are looking at $3900 vs $2700, which makes the choice quite obvious to someone who draws.

The exhaust on the side is a bit annoying for mouse user, however, it's great on the lap use, because there is no vents to block on the bottom. Even using it in bed or on top of a pillow is fine too, as long as the side is not obstructed. I'm impressed with how silent the machine as well. It's a great machine for programmer, designer and illustrator to be honest. Great keyboard and touchpad, and also comes with improved pen performance compared to previous generation (also most of MPP and AES devices). There is nothing like this in the market. I think the best buy if you want to go all out is with $2699 SKU. Double the RAM and also as usual, the bigger SSD is also much faster, the 1TB variant have around 3400MB read and 2800MB write. That's double the write performance.

I have a Surface Book and looking at an upgrade in the near future. As much as I loved the form factor of the Surface Book, over time I converged on only using it in 2 modes 90% of the time. I either had it as a laptop, or I had the screen flipped around and folded flat to draw/write. I very rarely used the tablet as a standalone device, so this new Studio form factor looks to be the product of Microsoft observing how people were using the Surface Book. I'll say exactly the same about this thing that I've always said about the Surface Book. These laptops are for inking. They're designed specifically for pen input. If you aren't going to use the pen then don't buy them for all the reasons you said. You can get a better regular laptop for this money if you aren't even using the Surface for what it's primarily designed for. The problem for Apple with business market is not longevity of Windows laptops but software - plain and simple. So many companies have to have fully functional Office suite, but MacOS, iPadOs are glorified Office files viewers pretty much. There is no point investing into Apple ecosystem when you receive complex .xlsx files and can't use them despite having the best hardware possible. Sure there is no 2in1 in Apple catalogue but having it will not make Apple jump to 25% business market share

CPU aside, the GPU is similar in performance to M1 Pro (even beating M1 Pro in some cases). Sure, it would be nice to have faster (and especially more efficient) CPU, but what do people really use ultra fast CPUs so much for anyways? To me, GPU performance is far more important; gaming and rendering use lots of GPU power, CPU not so much. I only need it to be able to do school stuff and maybe play the occasional TFT or something really low-spec. However, i draw as a hobby and in my classes like organic chemistry, having diagrams in your notes is the difference between a A and a B. The utility of being able to just flip something and draw a chem-chain is SO useful. This is a GREAT 2nd computer. This is not the best primary computer. If im being honest, i dont think any laptop makes a good 'only' computer. They are just clunkier than desktops are. They have a formfactor they need either for logistical or structural reasons. That form factor has nothing to do with how easy it is to use, thats more of an obstacle that needs to be overcome by the engineering team.

you don't understand one simple thing: literally no one makes laptops for illustrators/artists. I'm talking about a device that is actually a mobile workstation for freelance artists/illustrators. It means that the laptop must be at least somehow foldable in order to be able to draw on it. Everything you can buy is made for... well, for taking notes? On a laptop?!😂 For real professional work in photoshop and illustrator, a laptop with a video card is simply not on the market. Don't forget also that artists are not like office workers, they love beauty, they like to play games. There was only one gorgeous laptop for its time, the Dell precision 2in1, which came out many years ago and it's already outdated (although you can still run games and Photoshop on it). And Dell basically stopped giving a damn about the artists and did not update it (although they updated other precisions). And these ridiculous not foldable laptops with a touch screen and powerful at the same time, I don’t know for whom they are produced at all. All the freelance artist has to do now is carry around this huge and stupid Wacom “second display”. So the Surface in this context is by far the best in a long time. I that sense there are no competitors that you are talking about here.😂

I would pay top dollars for a MacBook with a pen and touch display that can become a killer graphic tablet when needed ( I know there’s iPad+MacBook for that and that’s what I use for work but man would it be awesome to have them merged in one portable machine)

@@MatthewMoniz yeah, “small” issues that make those machines quite unattractive despite all the pluses. Similar to what happened with the desktop Surface Studio, great machine but not upgradeable so another big miss for a workstation/desktop pro machine with that price tag. Or the Surface Pro X, otherwise great but the slow arm processor and bad OS made it a no-go for nearly everyone.

Microsoft is killing it and there is no "quite there". There is a reason, AMD is not in many laptops and Apple can't even make a computer-tablet or touchscreen laptop with pen support and basic 21st century features like 1080p webcam, 2-in-1 design, 180 degree screen, etc. Apple who is not even close to being there....

@Matthew Moniz. The Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio is Repairable, and the Hard-drive is upgradeable. I am not sure if anything else can be changed out internally. You do have two USB-C ports to add external devices. They seem to not want to really compete with their O.E.M. partners. Great video.

I would agree that the cpu should have at least 6 cours however, I often see that people are comparing this device to larger 15 inch laptops such as the xps 15 or laptops with different target groups such as the Macbook Pro 16. Obviously it's going to lose against a bigger laptop that has enough space for a better cpu and gpu. If you want performance definitely go for the Macbook Pro. Its only weakness is the lack of touchscreen and pen support which makes it an easy decision for me. If you are going to use all the SLS' features such as the 3 modes, touchscreen + pen usage and light gaming or video editing or rendering or drawing then I don't really see any competition. Tell me if you know about a device that can exceed the SLS in those categories tho :D

I7 11800H and i7 11370H use the same power, this should not be a power issue. The 11800H costs marginally more so it really should've been used. I do wish the 3060 max q was used instead of the 3050ti as well, the cooling solution should be more than enough to handle it.

That heat venting thing out the side was something I found very annoying with the Asus G14 as I always used a gaming mouse for gaming and that was constantly getting hit by a blast of heat on the side of my hand. However, I didn't buy the version of this with the GPU as I only wanted it for the more tablet-friendly experience and to see how it worked for drawing and light photo touching, so I'm hoping that is not an issue for me.

M1 pro is all hype, every time that chips been released pro to what ever it has insanely good bench numbers but it quickly falls off against other chips in the market. I do not trust anything apple, but i do try to keep an open mind and the form factor they've designed for the performance they get is incredibly good. However, the benchmarks always seem to drastically inflated so when its out it in the wild it drops a good 20 - 30 % from the initial numbers presented. Now this is normal intel and amd have the same drop range of around 10 - 20 %. But far far less hype O_o And too many apple fan boys automatically thinking that somethings better cause its apple. On the cores, realistically with 1 screen geared towards perhaps 1 or 2 processes at any one time you don't need more than 4 cores. Even for gaming 4 cores is enough for most games at mid range graphics.

I'm not sure how I feel about you basically shutting down both Intel and AMD for "power hungry" cpu's. Microsoft often claims they work with the OEM to get the most of the part without "compromising". M1 is ARM. You cannot equally compare ARM x64 which sips power, but relies heavily on good software to see the maximum potential. Apple has the capacity to design their own stuff because that is apart of their business model. Microsoft is primarily is software compant first, Cloud 2nd, Hardware 3rd.
