I saw Surface Music live in the 70’s before they recorded this song in suburban Walnut Creek ,Ca. Gary, the leader wore a dress and played a solo with a vacuum cleaner. It was a wild crazy conceptual show blowing my teenage mind…. but his guitar playing was the thing that really got to me though.

Yeah it really was. I'd hear it in 81 and it was still around in 90. Also the Lawn Chairs song.

Mike Green on the skins. I seem to recall Dan Magazin was on keys for the actual recording. Gary is and was a brilliant guitarist and his sense of humor was infectious.

Awesome indeed! I knew Gary back then, the live shows were always great. The world missed out on a great guitarist/songwriter with this band. The bass player for the band I managed back then subbed in for a show w/ him. Now we need to find vids/recordings of "Slim Jims" and "Aisles of Plenty".

Gary said that the songs he worked hard & long on were OK, but the popular favorites were the ones that wrote themselves in like 5 minutes; like "Janitor."

No Idea, that was Berkeley/East Bay early 80's - think Surface Music was from Concord? Great show, like DEVO and Captain Beefheart had a beautiful baby. Need to wiki this.

Hello Chris! I'm Gary's nephew. He still gigs occasionally but I don't think that he's particularly fond of this song anymore.

@@TylerKingNuReview Thanks Tyler, Gary and I played together way back when. I am so glad to hear that he is still playing. He is a monster talent. For some reason I worried that something bad had happened to him. When you see him give him my best. ( And haha: he evolved since “I am a Janitor”.
