This phenomenon is known as a coalescence cascade. Here is an example of this fantastic effect that I spotted, which is exhibited by some fluids where surface tension and other factors can cause droplets to 'float' atop the surface of another liquid. It's rather mesmerising...
In this example the the fluids are the reactants and products of a chemical reaction, namely the oxidation of ethanol to ethanal w/ sodium dichromate. Both the dichromate and the products exhibit this effect on the surface of the products, which can be seen as the orange and green droplets floating around.
