This is the first filmed account of surfing the North Potato Patch, aka Four Fathom Bank. The infamous shoal and shipping hazard is located outside of the Golden Gate Bridge, off of Point Bonita. Dr. Mark Renneker is the first person to have surfed Potato Patch in 1983, having gotten out to the North Patch by boat and paddling into a forty footer. He has also surfed South Patch numerous times over the decades. The uneven, washboard bottom, makes the waves unpredictable. After this session Perry Miller stated, "The hold down was intense and really surprising for the wave's size. It's the devil's playground out there." The long ride out, after launching from Sausalito, makes surfing it even more challenging. Surfline.com wrote of Potato Patch, "Creepy - a minefield of shifting, throwing peaks, extending from a couple hundred yards offshore, all the way to the horizon. During a giant swell in the Potato Patch, you will stare at nature in all it's beautiful evil."
