How to install a #Surge_Protection_Device.
How #surge_protection devices work.
An #SPD is to be installed on to an electrical circuit, and is for the #Electrical_safety of the equipment, mainly from voltage spikes.
These are mainly designed to protect against transient voltage surges that appear and disappear in just a few microseconds.
Although the duration of these spikes are very short, large single surge events such as lightning strikes, can reach hundreds of thousands of volts and can cause immediate damage to the equipment.
However, #lightning strikes account only for around 20% of total transient surge activities.
Remaining 80% of surges occur internally, when a motor starts or some other supply line fault outside of human control.
Although these surges can be of smaller in magnitude, with a higher frequency of occurrence, and with continued exposure, they can degrade sensitive electronic equipment within the circuit.
Installation of an SPD on to an electrical panel board is explained here with simple but explanatory animation work.
Description of the internal parts of an SPD and how they work together to arrest transient surges quickly, are very well explained here in this video.
