I had a total hysterectomy at 37 due to severe endometriosis . I had organs stuck together. It was agony. Had to go privately as nhs didn’t want to help me for many years. Then the surgeon said it was the worst case he had ever seen. So glad it’s over with. The menopause feels like nothing compared to the agony I was in before

Very interesting and most helpful. I had a sub-hysterectomy for fibroids ( which had grown to about 22cm) in 2013 at the 46. I’ve had no support nor guidance regarding post operation and hormonal checks. I’ve opted for keeping my neck of the cervix as I didn’t feel I wanted to be butchered as you say they normally encourage you to have the whole lot out. I’ve had my ovaries too left as they were healthy and I insisted on that if that were the case that I did not want onset menopause post op. I have suffered from insomnia for so long now that it hard to remember when they had started. And night sweats usually if I had some alcohol or dairy. That said I’m now 55 and in the last 2 weeks have noticed a major increase of being woken up at night with night sweats despite no consumption of dairy and alcohol I feel my body now has come to the level of being in menopause - due to low oestrogen levels. Have to say I’ve always taken the natural path and not synthetic medication - have been on various complementary supplements to ease the symptoms. I’ve alway have taken care of my body in preventive terms and lean toward natural remedy - but now I feel that buying so many different types of herbs and vitamins - sleeping aids none of which are having the effect. It is so sad women in general are left to our own devices trying to work this minefield of our personal healthcare - with very little support. Thank you for your extraordinary knowledge and putting it for us to women to be more armed with the options - clearing the myth of the dangers of HRT which I have admit I was very reluctant I consider. But now since listening to you and through a friend who sent your KZitem link on the menopause that you did during the lockdown, I’ve printed your symptom questionnaire and made an appointment with my GP. Many many thanks 🙏🏻💕 I will say this though that my brain fog and what felt like chronic fatigue a few months ago has cleared after taking a good multivitamin for women. So I was deficient in other areas too, which we need to consider 🌟

Wow what an eye opener. I had everything removed at 30. Been on heart till august 2020. Obgyn said she would not give me more meds if I didn’t have a mammogram cause at 68 I had terrible risk of breast cancer. So I got it done came back fine. Then she said she wanted me off her because I am at risk of heart disease . So since august I’ve been miserable. Night sweats, days sweats, dry eyes, bad mood, foggy brain definitely not very sociable. Finally I convinced her to refill the prescription for a patch . I was on .025 mg of Estradiol with no hot flushes, however did have other symptoms, now that I listen to you. She really put the fear of God in me making me think that being on this med I’m going to die. As of this moment I’m putting those patches back on and looking for another doctor.

So I stated my HRT last night 2 pumps of estrogel - today has been HORRENDOUS with cramps and violent ‘runs’ to the loo all day. A wonderful lady on the balance app pointed me to this video and BINGO! I was one that post hysterectomy was told my endometriosis was the second worst case the surgeon had seen in her 25 years of practice - I am so incredibly frustrated that even after advising my endocrinologist this she STILL said I won’t need progesterone ….. I’ll be making a call to her rooms tomorrow to get a script Thank you and God bless you and your work 🙏🏻

Thanks for the vital information! I am literally at the end of my tether trying to get help. I had an oophorectomy, hysterectomy and vaginoplasty when l was 40 (now 54). I am currently taking vaginal HRT cream every 3 days but stopped taking the estradiol gel a few years back because I was told that after 51 there was increased risk of cancer. I am now experiencing a lot of symptoms due to low estrogen - vaginal dryness, pain during intercourse (particularly at the vaginal opening), increase waking to urinate at night, depression, anxiety, extreme irritability, headache, pelvic discomfort, and a slight increase in incidence in heart palpitations. The doctors l have seen are very hesitant to give me both the estradiol gel and the vaginal cream. From your talk, it seems the concern is not warranted. What is your recommendation for vaginal and systemic HRT dosage to start reducing symptoms related to low estrogen? Should l continue to insert the cream every 3 days and start the estradiol gel daily (1-2 pumps)? Do you recommend following a 21 days cycle (7 days without HRT) even if one does not have ovaries and uterus? Finally, have any of your patients complain of peripheral neuropathy (tingling and burning) in their arms and legs (and sometimes in my torso)? I have read that it may be related to low testosterone. Any guidance is sincerely appreciated!

I'm 47 and had my hysterectomy in Feb 2020 (due to large fibroids). I kept my ovaries at the time. But I had some aggressive abdominal adhesions, so in July 2020, they decided to go in and do an exploratory laproscopic surgery and possibly loosen them up. I was told there was a slight (but highly unlikely) possibility that they may need to take one ovary. I woke up with no ovaries. Apparently, the adhesions had strapped one ovary to my colon and the other to my bladder. They also (finally) found that I had endometriosis all over the place (including the ovaries) and a bunch of cysts in my ovaries. So, they removed them, then slapped an estrogen patch on my butt and sent me on my way. I took oral estradiol for a while, but I had a TIA, so no more of that. Now I'm on low dose asprin every day. They decided to put me on patches as instead of pills (0.05). Not once did anyone tell me about any supplements or additional HRT. I've felt awful for 4 years. I've been treated for everything, BUT hormone issues. Nobody ever tested them - not before when I'd had issues for years, and certainly not once in the past 4 years, until I decided to go to a functional medicine practice. People have their opinions on that, but they did the test and found out all my hormones were completely in the tank. I have extreme fatigue, constant depression, pain all over, hair thinning and falling out, unstoppable weight gain, chronic migraine, and cognitive decline, among other symptoms. I've (since surgical menopause) been treated for rhuematoid arthritis, Fibromyalgia, migraine, and on and on, and basically, I've just been told if I lose weight, I'll be fine. I'd love to, but I can't do anything. Too much pain, and too much fatigue. Nobody bothered to find out why, because no one believes you when you say you've tried lifting weights and changing your diet, all to still gain weight (fat, not muscle). I used to be an avid weightlifter - this version of me is not me. Fortunately, the functional medicine practice has prescribed multiple types of HRT to get me back in normal ranges. I'm starting it tomorrow. Here's to hoping!

Hello Dr Louise, can you offer some advice please. Im 50 yrs of age and in perimenopause. A year ago today I had an Mri and was told I had a 5cm cyst on my ovary and a 3cm cyst on the other ovary. I have fibriods on my uterus and endometriosis. This was a shock as I only have lower back ache and need to wee more than I used to. My first consultant said I'd need a total hysterectomy. I personally did not want this as I didn't want to go in surgical menopause and go through all the symptoms. My 2nd opinion consultant said I don't need a total hysterectomy, but a laparoscopic bilateral salpingo oophorectomy. However after doing my own extensive research, I feel as most women go into natural menopause at the average age of 51/52, I would rather wait and just completely change my diet. No white foods, no sugar, no dairy, no caffeine, no red meat and use supplements such as Omega 3, Calcium , Vit K2, Magnesium, Vit D & Vit C and iodine supplements. I currently only use a pea size amount of bioidentical progest cream of an evening, which has stopped perimenopause hot flushes at night and sleep well. My family are upset that I'm not choosing to go ahead with the oophorectomy on the 30th Jan 2023. I just feel that as my cysts are benign, if I just get private mri scans every 6mths to keep an eye on things till I'm in natural menopause, that's the best option for me. I would so appreciate advice. Sorry for the long message. X

Thank you for your very informative, detailed videos. I had total abdominal hysterectomy last year @59 postmenopausal since 51. Everything removed, due to borderline ovarian tumor. Fortunately no implants anywhere else. I never took hrt for my menopausal symptoms, after the surgery i had more intense hotflashes again it looks like i was suffering second menopause due to the surgery. I asked my doctor to prescribe something because i was not prepared to go through the hotflashes and night sweats again. So he gave me Livial, i take half a day and it helps a lot in my hot flashes greatly, but it does not seems to do anything in my brain fogs, joint pain hair loss problem. My question is could i take a low dose estrogen only hrt and would it be more beneficial for me than taking Livial? Excuse my english i am from Hungary. Thank you so much!

HRT would be conflicting with the medical menopause, as it is meant to give you back a small amount of the same hormones medical menopause is stopping. You'd want to ask your gynecologist.

I had my pap smear test today with my gynaecologist and decided to pay for an ultrasound (because why not, it's important). I'm 58 and started the menopause at around 51, but I've never had hot flushes so didn't take HRT. I was also a little bit afraid of stroke. The scan (had this today) showed that I have endometrial thickening (7cm) and there are some black spaces on the images. She's given me something called Chlormadinon 2mg (12 tablets) to take once a day and said to expect some bleeding. I asked about HRT, but she said it won't do anything now and that it's too late - I should have started much earlier. Anyway, I've been looking up and read a research paper from 2016, and now I'm worried that I've got endometrial cancer as I've also been have pains (like light uterus contractions after having a baby). In fact I'm a bit worried and won't see her again until mid April. What do you think? I'm guessing taking HRT with a 7cm-think uterus lining is going to increase the risk. I'd love your advice Dr Newson 😐

Is surgical menopause or hormonal suppression that accomplishes the same thing a last-resort option for women with pain so severe they are terrified to even become aroused due to past pelvic pain during arousal? I just watched a video about a woman who has to be celibate even though she is young and married and she and her husband are still attracted to one another. She has had surgery for lesions, which actually made it even more painful. She later developed vaginismus which if I read correctly, was attributed to her psychological reaction to having experienced severe vaginal pain during intimacy and after her surgery. It would be only the woman who knew which options might work for her, but this level of deprivation seems enough that if menopause usually MUCH improves endometriosis and sometimes ends it, it might be considered. (She has to avoid just intercourse, but just holding hands, sometimes, causes the pain.)
