Lightning owner here. I rarely use a charger other than the one at home. If Andre had charged at home, he would have paid only $8.34, rather than $31.00, for the Denver 100 Loop. This is 1/2 the cost of filling the V8. This is based on 17 cents/kW that Andre mentioned as his home electric cost. (edited to see that Andre did the math at the end, and had a more accurate $ than mine). Depending on your driving needs, you could save a ton of money driving a Lightning compared to a V8 F150. You also save a ton of time as one rarely needs to use an outside charger while the V8 F150 will have to visit a gas station frequently.

100% get what your saying. Yes with the 5.0L you will obviously have more time spent at the gas pump, (unless you’re a farmer, then you can full up at home). But the fact is when it comes to doing actual truck stuff, like hauling over a long distance, there is no comparison at this point. I’m sure that will get closer as the battery tech gets better tho. If you live in a city where you do a little bit of communing, and light towing for a few miles, then I’m sure the Lightning checks the box for a lot of people. In the end, I guess that’s the reason why Ford makes an electric truck, hybrid one, and a straight gas powered truck. Different strokes for different folks.🤷🏼♂️

If you own a truck, you likely have access to a garage. Charging an electric vehicle (EV) at home is about 10 times cheaper than filling up with gas. Plus, you avoid trips to the gas station and wake up with a "full tank" every day. For long road trips, the cost of charging can be comparable to gas, so if your job involves frequent cross-country driving, a gas or hybrid vehicle might be more practical. However, for most people who take maybe one road trip a year, that's not a strong argument for sticking with gas-powered vehicles. If saving money on fuel is your priority, EVs are the obvious choice.

The vast majority of the US population live in Apartments or some other form of multi housing and do not have a way to plug in at night, so they would have to use public charging. Then there are the rules you have to follow, like the Apartments next to my place, after an E-bike caught fire while charging at an outdoor plug near and burned the side of the building, they banned all E-bikes from the property and all EV's have to be at least 100 feet from any building on the property or be subject to tow at owners expense. Since there is no place to park that is 100 feet from any building, they have to park on the street. Not just on the street but across the street. They even installed signs at the edge of the sidewalk indicating that if you park an EV there it will be subject to tow per the rules of the complex.

The nice think about a gas vehicle is you can fill it in a minute or so with no planning. A electric vehicle is well I don't want to charge until the battery is under 25% and it's cheaper if I charge at home over night. And don't forget if you charge over 75% it is hard on the battery which takes that 400 mile range down to 300 miles. No thank I'll stick with my ICE truck.
@jghall00

Going over 80% isn't hard on the battery...it's just slower charge rate. The degradation from charging over 80% won't be noticeable to the average consumer for years. My Focus Electric lost around 7% in 80,000 miles and that battery was from 2017. New ones are even better. Manufacturers already leave a buffer on the top of the pack so 100% isn't really fully charged.
@kingbran923

The only reason you can drive around with no plan in a gas car is because of how common gas stations are. Give it 10 more years and that won't be an issue for EVs either. I'm not sure what you were trying to say in that second sentence but yes charging at home is cheaper. Charging over 80% is for Lithium Ion batteries and you can do that but it's not recommended for battery longevity. That being said, you don't need 400 miles for your daily commute. If you are driving 400 every day, you are going to destroy any car you do that to in one way or the other. You're more than welcome to keep your ICE truck, it's a free country and we don't care one bit what you drive but if you're interested in saving on fuel costs, EV's are the way to go, it's just a fact.

I have gotten used to this and now when I occasionally drive my pickup I forget that it doesn't start full and I glance at my gas gauge and see it's almost empty and remember that you have to take it to a gas station and put $100 in it. What most people don’t calculate into the cost of ownership is battery replacement in 10 years if you like to keep trucks longer than you financed it for. Let’s just say the battery was $30,000 to replace(likely a lot more for an f150). After 10 years you need to add that cost to your ownership bill and it would equal another $3000 per year on top of what you paid for electricity to your bill. V8’s and ICE engines MAY require work, but many do not. So, if you do the math, I doubt electric will work out to your advantage. Short term, it may seem cheaper. Long term, you will always either be buying a new truck, or end up with very expensive batteries, of which both likely negate any savings you had initially projected.

😂 we get it you’re against EV’s. I have family and friends with EV’s and most of them haven’t paid a cent for doing their commutes in years. 1 of them bought a Tesla because as a perk at their job they get free charging. 80 miles commute daily. 1 of them has a 9kw solar array at home, his monthly bill is 20 odd bucks including powering the house and his mini splits and charging the car. In the winter it jumps up to 70-80a month. 1- bought a Tesla and has a 16kw solar array at his business a car wash. EV’s will make you independent of fuels if you know what’s up. I do 25k a year, and average 6k a year in fuel in my 17’ 5.0. In my 24’ powerboost I average 3,500 a year. In a lightning I had for 2 weeks I charged for free at work 😂

Misleading title and a little disingenuous. EA is currently the most expensive network and it costs $0.64 per kW. There's literally a 7-11 Chargepoint station down the street that cost $0.49 per kW. This is like comparing the cost using Shell($4.14) vs King Scoopers($3.44), which is the gas station they used to fill up the ICE version. Charging at home is the cheapest option. It would cost him $8 to charge the Lightning compared to $31 Lightning- EA: $31 Chargepoint: $24 Charging at home: $8 Gas F-150- Shell: $23 King Scoopers: $17

What it boils down to is this: - >80% of the time for probably 95% or more of the population, you're getting your energy at home. For me personally as an ev driver, its like 90%. - for that 90% of your total fuel/energy consumption, the cost is 1/5 to 1/2 the cost of fueling a gas vehicle, and way more convenient to do so. For the 10%-20% of the energy use that you are charging on the road, thats where the cost savings reduce. Or in the case of USA drivers with the lowest fuel costs on the planet, could even be more. The math of saving time and money by a factor of 1/4 of the cost of fuel, for 80- 90% of the time, still heavily beats the 10-20% that you're using public charging and possibly even paying more.

Here in CT, the home electric rate is 35 cents / kWh. Your fill up will cost $17.05 if charged at home here. Pretty much the same cost per mile as gas. It simply is not worth it to me considering the initial cost, range and time to charge. A 30 amp /240 volt quick charger will cost hundreds of dollars to install in my garage. It costs me a dollar to drive the 120 miles to town and back, my power is all renewable made locally by Montana residents. When it's -40 the Bolt drives fine, but I wouldn't think of driving any of my ICE trucks. Plus the lack of maintenance is welcome with my fleet of other vehicles that need almost constant attention. EVs are better in almost every scenario as far as cost is concerned. When it comes to road tripping, EVs are still more cost effective however where they lack is time. If you are road tripping and need to get there fast, take a gas car. You'll pay more for driving a gas car long distances but you'll arrive faster. If fast road tripping is not an issue for you, an EV road trip is far more enjoyable and inexpensive, I've done two cross country road trips in my 2021 Model 3 and it cost slightly less than $300 each way.

I think a hybrid system should be the next step in the evolution. A small ICE driving an alternator which would drive electric motors. An Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) losses most of it energy through heat losses not motive power. There are ways to recoup that loss, and convert it to electricity, that concept should be explored. An ICE powered truck could get even better economy if it could capture some of the heat energy lost through coolant but mostly through the exhaust.

A gas station can refuel a tank in less than 5 minutes, with the cost around $200 depending on the size and model of the car. For an electric car, it takes about an hour to charge, and if the kWh rate is around $2, it costs about $100 to fully charge. Therefore, hypothetically, an electric car charger can generate a maximum of $100 in one hour, while a gas station can refuel 12 cars at $200 each. This highlights the difference in revenue. Additionally, the installation and maintenance costs for a gas station are lower, meaning that even though the profit margin for electricity is high, it doesn't yield the same returns (plus it's expensive to implement).
@pepofiorucci

Charging stations are not profitable. Its important to have modular batterys.
@davidbergerson
3 сағат бұрын
Your assumptions are incomplete. You have CapEx and OpEx. CapEx is the expense to build the energy dispenser. For a gas station this is the underground tanks plus the gas pumps. For a charger, it is the distribution system plus the charger. OpEx is the cost to operate the energy dispenser. The cost to build a gas station, just delivering gas is higher than it is to build chargers. It also takes a lot longer due to environmental permits. The cost to operate a gas station is higher than a charger. And yes, this is even if there is no convenience store attached to it. Those gas pumps don't run off of air, they take electricity to run! The net margins for gasoline are about 4 cents per gallon. The net margins for chargers is about 32%. To put that in perspective, gas at the pump, without all the taxes, being $3 per gallon, their cost would be under $2 per gallon. But, the reality is that their cost would be $2.96. Both 'dispensers' suffer from the same issues. They create bottlenecks because it can only dispense to one vehicle at a time. There will also be times that it is just sitting there, idle, waiting for vehicles. If we were to assume a 35% usage for gas stations, and that is probably not that far off because that pump probably sits idle from 9pm to 5am and it is not used non-stop in between those hours and of course there is the changing of the vehicle time. If that pump pushes out the standard 8 gallons per minute. It pushes out 4,032 gallons per day (24h*60min*35%usage*8gpm) That pump just earned the gas station owner $161.28 in revenue. If we look at a charger, unfortunately, we need to put a price per kWh as an assumption (.45) and we need a kWh transferred per minute assumption (1.5) The charger will earn $108 (24h*60min*.35usage*.45price*1.5 kWhPerMinute*.32Margin) per day. That makes that EV charger look bad doesn't it? It is really really really hard to steal from an EV Charger, to the point it is almost impossible. One person doing a gas and dash can take away ~1/2 the days profits. But wait, there is more. Part of the OpEx is the land cost! That is not free for a gas station. So if you rent the land, yes, that is an OpEx number and if you own the land, that is a CapEx number. But wait, there is even more. There is property taxes to be paid on that land. Is there for an EV Charger? :) This is why EV chargers are more profitable per day than a gas pump. Gas pumps have a serious benefit over ev chargers in that the flow rate is constant. If your gas tank is empty, 1/2 or 3/4 full, it still pumps at about 8 gallons a minute. EV chargers can't do that. They have a curve and it is a constant talk between the EV and the charger. This is why you see people who own EVs live in the 20-80% range when they use fast charging. Once you get past 80%, it slows down. The sort of rule of thumb is that it takes as long to go from 80 to 100 as it does from 10 to 80. This is why you are seeing for a push into even faster charging into EVs. But right now, the cost difference for a faster DC charger is too much. That will lower in time though like all electronics do :)

The ICE truck has a 36 gallon gas tank - the EV truck carries the equivalent of 4 gallons of gas (131 KWh usable capacity. The EV truck does not even come close to energy used for 300 miles compared to the gas truck at 70 miles per hour. The KWh rate varies greatly depending on where you charge. Home or destination charging is much less in cost compared to gas station cost for the same mileage driven. Only at DC fast charging like TFL shows gets expensive. Electric cars have been around since the 1930s-1950s and were popular in cities. Internal combustion became more popular because they could be operated in the country and didn't require any infrastructure. In the early days of internal combustion, the engines could run on almost anything combustible that could be purchased at a general store. Now in modern times the idiots in the government decided to put "the cart before the horse" and try to push Electric Vehicle adoption on the world without first building a reliable, convenient (easy to use), and affordable charging network worldwide.

Also, on a long road trip, you can often find hotels with free charging overnight. Way to provide the anti ev crowd with their bias confirmation
