Hi Guys and pooches ; Greetings from Nova Scotia . One of the sayings we have in Nova Scotia " Once you visit your Heart will never leave ". My mother's family ,my grandparents , left Ireland because of the famine from County Kerry , Tralee and they came to Canada .. I feel because of what you have discovered you can relate to what I'm about to relate . When I first visited Ireland I felt I had come Home . AS with Nova Scotia when I visited Ireland my Heart will never leave . Happy Trails

During the Famine, the Sultan of Turkey sent 5 ships full of food for the starving Irish. The powerful British navy blocked them from entering Dublin port so they secretly landed the aid in Drogheda port. Today the crest of Drogheda united football shows a star and crescent to remember the kind act of the Sultan.

Hi Chesca and Ben. Have absolutely loved your Ireland series, such an amazing country. Talking of family trees, my brother spent five years researching ours. Our paternal side started at 1576 and our maternal side 1127. Incredibly two of our ancestors were connected to royalty. One was Lady in Waiting to Queen Elizabeth 1 and the other Maid of Honour to Anne Boleyn! It's absolutely fascinating. I messaged you a while back to tell you about my husband, Nigel who had passed away in February and mentioned that we wanted to go travelling and had so many plans. Well I am going to Spain, Italy, Türkiye, Greece and Gibraltar next April to celebrate my 60th birthday. How brave am I!! Hope you are enjoying yourselves with Marianne and Chris on their finish line, looking forward to seeing their video of that. Hurry up and come to Wales please, I can show you some stunning locations :) Andrea xx

You're an inspiration with your travels. I live near Galway and you've reminded me that I must get out into the countryside more often. The famine story is unbelievably tragic. The population was decimated by hunger and poverty and families had to leave in a mass exodus abandoning their small fields. Fields made by picking stones from the harsh Connemara land over many generations. You see old stone houses dotted all over the place with their roofs missing and crumbling walls. The only guaranteed weather is "changeable". The day can start overcast and rainy here on the west coast of Ireland and end with beautiful sunsets. Come back soon.

Beautiful series, glad you enjoyed our well your country too , you really did it justice. Connemara is a stunning place and your right it’s totally unique, even to Ireland, I think your ancestry is the reason you found a deep connection with the area . Unlike most places Connemara won’t have changed much since your Ancestors time , you will have been sitting there looking at views that are still exactly the same as it would have looked through their eyes 170 years ago, that’s a pretty unique thing 💚☘️

All choked up, teary-eyed and homesick as hell. I have to go back soon, soon, soon. My 3x great-grandfather was an immigrant coalminer entering by way of Canada to Pennsylvania, a Molly Maguire and, I've been told, died in a jail cell for it. That's all I know of my Irish family.

@@jkbarber62 I'm sad that my grands left Ireland in hopes of leaving behind desperation only to find more of the same at the hands of the coal company here. I know at some point the family left the coal regions and moved to Union County. I have a vague memory of my great-uncle Mahlon, but our family history seems to have died with him. My great great grandparents on my dads side came from Belmullet in Co Mayo to Sunderland in early 1880s, I would think at that time it was for work as the North East was massively industrial, especially around the major rivers. I have known about my Irish heritage since I can remember but only recently have we delved into, and finding out where they had lived really makes you feel a strong connection to your heritage. I really need to visit soon, your latest journey is what has got me researching the family tree and making new discoveries. Anyone from Belmullet who might read this (not likely i know!), i'd love to learn more about life during that period they would have left.

Guys , if your coming back and starting your trip in Galway , I highly recommend Roundstone , In Connemara. It’s a bit special. And very often bypassed in favour of Clifden a larger town . And if your really organised try to time it for the weekend of the sailing regatta, when the Galway hookers ( that’s a type of boat , behave ) come into the village . I think it’s sometime in June normally .

Your family Great Famine experience is a shock to you. This is probably the first time you thought like this. You're absolutely right, it's not long ago. You're definitely Irish now with the emotions you're feeling. We've had time to deal with it and it's still very raw. That's why we are quick to respond to famines and catastrophes in other countries, and why we have a full appreciation of emigration and immigration.

It’s actually one of the things I love about the Irish, seeing the solidarity with Palestine as we drove through, the resistance to being oppressed. Doesn’t go unnoticed. I’ve read a lot about the famine, or genocide of the Irish. So much history that is ignored in school, similar to how the Irish war of independence is completely erased. One minute there’s no Republic, then there is! As if it popped up overnight!

Glad you got to find out a little about your own back story. There's a reason behind why so many Irish left Ireland, and that we Irish punch above our weight on the world stage. America, Australia and UK to name just a few. The population in Ireland, unlike every other country in the world, is still lower today, than it was in the 1800's There was plenty of food in Ireland. As you have seen, it's a green, lush and fertile land, but the food grown here at the time wasn't ours to eat, or indeed the rivers and lakes ours to fish. You need to go back about 1000 years to see how it all started. Just a word of caution, it's not pleasant reading. However, the sins of the fathers are their own. Peace.

Hey Guys.. first off this has been an awesome series.. hope you all had a good time with the tread the globe meet, anyway onto the usual jabbering.. - it’s brilliant to see Scout with that horse is so nice.. finding family trees is so fascinating.. all of my family are from Bristol and Cornwall. All those jellyfish 🪼 😮.. I’ve been guilty of planning things so now I don’t too much because of the weather. 🌦️ I absolutely love it when people are really nice and share information, what a nice guy Tom is! 🍷 .. you can find out so much on the ancestry site, I’m sorry it was a little emotional, I can’t imagine how tough it might of been. Thanks for the place mentions, I’ve saved them for my visit.. walking from the Fjord.. there’s Norway 🇳🇴 you can do that now.. 13th Ben is the best.. 👌.. I did a half marathon in the 80’s.. and then they called them snickers.. on a serious note, that’s quite a feat running that far. Wow, that’s looks like monsoon season out there.. ☔️.. ah River looks so upset about the rain. Don’t have battery anxiety Ben, it’s ok, Lithium batteries are amazing kit! Oh the drone views are epic! Haha.. I remember the sink.. 😮.. just loving the views! This was and adventure.. the last bit rivals lord of the rings.. yay the Map! 🗺️ so much to see and never enough time.. all the best love to you all x

Your videos of Ireland are so beautiful.. I live Mayo and have a friend who lives near Cleggan by the sky road.. the drive down there via Leenane is stunning.. but always tinged with it's historic sadness of those famine years, the deaths and the exodus.. the presence of their absence is still there in the land and one can't pass through its emptiness without part of your heart heavy for them. Ford btw is a common name in Mayo and there are genealogy research centres in Ballina and Foxford I think. The fact that you know your ancestor died in Swinford will be very helpful to you when you return. Local people will be able to help you in your search.. and very possibly you could find where they lived and where your family members are buried.. and even possibly some living distant cousins. The local churches have books recording deaths going far back too.. and a lot of work has been done on old graveyards mapping family gravesites. Looking forward to your return trip.. Spring would be a good time.. I hope you find your family connections in Swinford when you return..

Have read various travel chronicles - more than one narrating unrelenting, torrential rain for an entire 40 days, can't locate immediately but I recall maybe it was 80 days one traveller! A lovely sunny day in Ireland with a warm breeze - nothing compares! There should be a charge like Venice, Santorini...such days!

Watching your video made me remember being in Ireland 2 yrs ago. Stayed in Galway and Dublin and we rented a car to see the countryside and Cliffs of Moors. Luckily it was crystal clear weather (honestly) but makes me wonder how you liked driving your van in Ireland. The roads are so narrow with stone walls at the edge of the road on both sides. We also almost ran into a herd of cows that the farmer was guiding down the middle of the road. Hope you had fun and thanks for the memory!

It's very interesting discovering your roots. Scout you were so gentle with the horses❤. River you like rain as much as I do😂. We have had some much needed rain here in NS. Stay safe ❤

I have been watching you both through my husband's subscription. I just subscribed to you We recently bought a camper van. The rusty snail we named it. I have never been in one before. But loving it. Great to get away and see more of Ireland. We enjoy your vlogs and how real you both are. The family tree ancestry is so cool to find out. It is also hard to know all that they went through. Loved seeing the horse. Enjoy your vlogs. Krista and David

Loved your video and be careful, Ireland will get into your veins and charm you until you never want to leave. Yes it's emotional and I'm glad you discovered Irish blood in your veins. Everyone wants a part of this place. When you visit Donegal, my county and probably the most spectacular part also,be sure to go to Errigal mountain and the poison glenn. Also Glenveigh castle and up to the very north and see Malin head , five finger strand , Kinnego bay , Greencastle and Moville on your trip. When in Greencastle take the ferry over to Magilligan point and you can set up camp on the shores of the foyle which are spectacular. Big love from Ireland .

If you return to Connemara I'd highly recommend Omey Island, Inishlacken Island and Foher Famine village which has several original cottages from the Famine period.

Lovely video as usual. Fascinating hearing of your Irish roots, Chesca, but sad about them fleeing during the famine. Lucky they did or we wouldn't have our lovely Chesca! Take care Ben and Chesca and River and Scout. Question--do you guys think some day you'll be stopping van life and buying or building a home like so many other van life KZitemrs are doing?

Random suggestion of the day: future adventure planning... Ship the van to Rio de Janeiro then drive down to Ushiaia. Swim in the bay (that bit is for Chesca😂) and then drive north to Panama for a swim in the Caribbean! That suggestion is for you both. Ben would love swimming off Red Frog Beach!!!! Sooooo warm.
