A friend and I were catching Bluegills in a small pond one day and he yelled, "I've got something BIG!" There was litlle actual "Fight", but whatever it was, it was definitely far bigger than any Blugill! After about 10 minutes he finally dragged into sight a Snapping Turtle about 18 inches in length! Nice catch. I'm glad it wasn't what I thought it might be down there around those rocks. It reminded me of a time I was fishing at a place that looked a lot like this and when I stepped down on one of those rocks my foot was about 4 inches away from the biggest snake I'd ever seen. He was up underneath a big rock and I guess the only reason I didn't get bit was maybe because he thought I didn't see him. Just wanted to let you know they like places like that, be careful!

In the winter when my Father in Law and I go fishing at their local lake (ice fishing), We go after walleyes through the ice.....but we have this one spot where not only do we catch wall hanger sized walleyes......we consistently hook into some pretty big channel cats.....sometimes we can't get them up through a 6" hole in the ice, haha. It's fun watching them come in on the flasher, the cats usually come cruising in pretty fast and aggressively follow your lure. The walleyes come in slowly right at the bottom, then slowly rise up and nibble very timidly. Good times, can't wait to get back out there again tihs winter:-). I have family over in Smith Center.....they love hunting and fishing, I never get to see them enough:-)

Remember the time I was fishing for bass on an AFB (79-81) I was stationed at. Had some shiners and hoping for bass, when suddenly I had a HUGE strike. Man, this has gotta be at least a 5 lb., maybe even 10 lb. bass from the way it's fighting. Catfish about 2 pounds or so. Then another, then another. Got about 8-9 of 'em all basically running the same weight. Of course, NO ONE was around when I got back to the barracks and started cleaning 'em in the laundry room. Then pulled out the electric skillet that Mom gave me (which I still have) and once the aroma of catfish being cooked filled the hallway, suddenly I had all sorts of friends around me.

Guns&Cars has it right. I lived in a beach community as a youngster and in the Oregon woods between 11 and 16 before going away in the Marines. I learned about the awesomeness of fresh seafood and a bit about the tiny, but complex worlds in tidepools. Moving meant learning to garden, catch trout, steelhead and salmon and making smoked meats, firearm safety, hunting, hiking, backpacking and wilderness camping. I got my own dog, goats, chickens, rabbits, hogs, and learned to butcher them all. Got my very first job working in a country cafe, or greasy spoon as my dad called them, not for money, but for the day's leftover buckets of food the customers didn't eat. My hogs would freak out at the mere sight of a white plastic five gallon bucket knowing they brought random gourmet hog food. Spaghetti noodles will induce a major amount of excitement from a hog that likes to slowly chew and savor a fat nightcrawler. Summertime meant riding my bike to the corn fields nearby and making the big bucks moving irrigation pipe. Two dollars and fifty cents an hour under the table from the farmer. Plus breakfast before daylight and lunch, with cheap watery beer included. I had access to hunt deer in the fall, spotlight raccoons, skunks and possums at night and the bounty on crows was fifty cents per set of feet and a break, per crow in other words, to prevent them from damaging crops. Unfortunately, we all have to grow up sooner or later, which often means discovering the reality of real estate. I'm forced to live in town where I hate it because only people who inherit country property or those who are wealthy can get out there and enjoy life as it is meant to be. I'd much rather be poor, financially speaking, and live in the country than rich and stuck in some high rise penthouse suite in the city anytime.
