That light is the brightest thing I've ever seen in an Altoids tin.

i like the solar options in this kit ( different yeah but still useful) I m pretty sure this one of very few that can harness solar ignition, solar thermal energy and solar power :D paired with a metal bottle for example would be more effective as it's not always sunny or raining ... could be just cloudy out( no rain water and long time for solar UV disinfection to work) Left a like. all the best from C.R.

Creative Redundancy, thanks for your feedback. Definitely agree that there's better ways to do everything, but fitting that within the container was obviously the hardest part. They have those compact versions of life straws which are pretty cool, don't know how effective they are though. You'll still get some solar action if it's overcast (of course depending on the level of cloud thickness), as long as the panels can warm up, you should get some light. But alas, it's just to difficult to cover so many situations. Anyway, thanks again.

Your only way to light a fire is a shitty ferrocerium rod and a magnifying glass. Your only way to purify water is the sun. Surely some matches and water purification tabs would have fit in there

michael ashbrook, sure, how long would those matches and tablets last? Couple days, or a week maybe? The point was to be long term, not short term. And I think I pointed out that if you have to rely on a kit like this, then you're a fool anyway. I guess you skipped those parts of the video. Feel free to share the link to your altoids kit. Would love to see your improvements over my own.

Knowledge of the environment you're in, is what will truly make you able to survive in it. Short term survivability doesn't translate to long term, if your stuff runs out and you rely too heavily on that. Hunter gatherers never had Altoids tin, coffee filters or charred mesh. Knowledge is what made them able to live in the landscape. There are ways to boil water and clean it. Maybe doe some research into that? It sounds like that knowledge might be useful for your own kit? Ultimately the things in this kit is what I've decided would be good for me, to have long term survivability, with the knowledge I have. Could I love in the environment with this kit? Depends on the environment. There are just places that no kit can prepare you for. I've lived in central Africa, the middle East, Australia and the USA. And some places in there without specific knowledge on survivability for those areas, you'll be dead pretty quick. And no coffee filter or charred cloth would be able to save you

I like the idea with the light, which charging controller did you use?

Hi! I used the TP4056 charging chip for this. I'm sure there are better ones out there now, but this was recommended to me the few years ago when I did this. Thanks for the comment! Have a good one, and definitely let me know if you make your own kit!

I hope you don't mind me adding a suggestion. You might consider swapping some less important items for a guarenteed method of starting a fire. In many areas, it is one of the easiest things to carry to affect keeping you safe in those first couple cold nights. If it is cloudy or dark that magnifying glass might not work when you need itt most. Just something to consider. Thanks for letting me see your ideas.

Yep, you're right. also that fire starting rod I have in there, is also crap. I could probably add a couple matches to this, with a striker, without really having to take anything out. Especially those good storm matches that are easy to buy as well, and have a better guarantee of starting a fire. So yeah, good idea! Thanks for the comment! I'm honestly building a slightly larger version of this. The Altoids tin was a cool experiment, and I can see why people do it. But if you make the container just slightly bigger, you can put soooo much more in it. So that's my next project.

@@supernotfunnyman , good idea going with a bigger edc kit. I went with a slightly bigger tin and I am very comfortable with how it turned out. I have carried an altoids tin for years, but will probably use my bigger tin for now on. If you want to check it out, go to my channel and watch the pocket hiking kit and maybe look at my previous altoids tin by comparison. Let me know what you think, if so. Have a great day.

Search for credit card axe or credit card survival tools. The people that sell them change their name fifty times a day. Mine was a pack of three for like $15? But I can't find them.
