I had a Russian mother-in-law. That's just dangerous on its own. At least with cute little nicknames like "Dragon," or in my case, "Cruella DeVille," or sometimes simply just "That Boney Psycho," you can retrieve a little of your sanity. I'm not still bitter at all. Nope. Just scarred (right behind the hairline). Possibly a little PTSD from the whole ordeal.

It was mentioned here before, but if I am going into the woods with my child we always carry a whistle around the neck. We are just now having heavy rain in Virginia, USA. I used to love camping in this weather if I had fairly secure shelter: I could really appreciate the minimal luxury of being dry and being out of the wind. Better quality modern tarps and cordage would be my choice for 'survival' needs in the forest these days. Just to follow your experience in this video: the rain was ready to fall before the shelter was anywhere near ready to serve a useful purpose. As a REAL survivalist, you had a tarp and total misery was averted (until you had to 'ride to the rescue' of the Pink Ninja and her guardian Dragon.

Lars, You have three upright arches. If you have an uneven number (3,5,7,9) then weaving horizontal green sticks through will give you the lateral strength. A process called Wattle. Whole shelters are woven like a basket using the Wattle method, then covered with a lime and ash mix called Daub. This is Wattle and Daub. There is loads of videos to see.
@SurvivalRussia

Yes, but as said, I wanted to do this as fast and simple as possible. Weaving shelters, fish traps and baskets are far from fast :)

@pauln2661
6 жыл бұрын
True, if you are doing the whole shelter at once. I would have woven a band of 5 or 7 high at the bottom and middle to give that front to rear strength you were looking for. Weaving the bottoms would allow you to fill in a dirt floor and not have a wet floor. This only means three saplings to xut down then split length wise for the lateral support (weaving splits is easier). Ten for a packed earth floor. Weaving is a lot of strength and does not use any cordage, wire, nails, screws, or pegs. Good luck! I like your hoop house. These are not made for shelter here, but are made as green houses for starting plants early in spring.

Lars, I'm finding it really difficult to believe that the pink ninja got lost in the forest. I think there may be a story here. Perhaps grandma dragon would not heed the advise of our ninja, thinking she was just a little girl who knows nothing. If I were lost in the woods, I would be happy to have the pink ninja there. I would say, ninja, get us out of here. And follow the lead of a little girl who knows a great deal about the forest.

Nice idea with the bark. Interesting to see, how it will hold out in the winter and so, how long time. A little detail notice from me too. The SSO SKVO combat jacket, you have on, I see, have lower pockets on the sides, like the SSO Palma camo jacket also, I noticed earlier. That is a cool feature, because it is the main reason, that these combat jackets are not so optimal as all round out doors jackets, the Western style ones, no lower pockets, but these Russian ones have them, on the sides. Maybe I should get one? :o) I like the Spectre camo. I will see. Nice day no matter what!!! PS. Good that you found them. Hopefully they had a Plash Palatka or so with them for the rain??
@SurvivalRussia
6 жыл бұрын
The shelter will suck during winter :) It will collapse if not cleaned very often from snow. However, if it was made for real survival I would be around to clean it :) A winter shelter I would make differently. Yes, the side mounted pockets are really nice. When full they do not get in the way. The SKWO is a great pattern. Works very well in almost all terrain. Great as winter camo too. They had absolutely nothing with them and they were soaked to the bone basically. They had a small mushroom knife :)
