You apologized at one point for the lack of exciting scenery and thanked us for sticking with the video, but that’s not necessary. Everything is an adventure on your channel! And in perspective, we get highlights from an amazing train journey in under 25 minutes on this episode. 😉 You’re the one who takes the hit, with the worn seats and little legroom. Travelling on the same train bdtween A and B, and It avoids you having to go through London and having to use 2 London terminal stations, and so not on the same train. People think that the Crosscountry train takes too long, but going through London takes even longer and it's a real drag.

A very interesting film of how things have changed over the years. In August 1983 as part of a 14-day Rail Rover, I arrived into Dundee off the Kings X - Aberdeen sleeper. After tea and bacon butty, I awaited the arrival of my train, ecs from Aberdeen, the 07.44 Dundee - Penzance HST, via ECML to Doncaster then Sheffield, Birmingham and Bristol. I enjoyed the comfort of MkIII coaching stock and the buffet car was adjacent and open all way to Penzance. Upon arrival I enjoyed fish & chips on promenade above the station, then caught the sleeper to Paddington!

You have made an excellent clip! Thank you. Many years ago, I forget exactly when but it was in the days of Virgin HSTs and before the internet, I had to travel from Penzance to Edinburgh and, a few days later from Dundee back to Penzance. In those days Virgin offered a first class ticket which included.breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea at a very good price. Furthermore, in those days all seats had tables so, wherever you sat, you could take in all the scenery. The journey was very comfortable and the service very good both ways. The buffet car staff worked the entire journey! I don't think they have to these days. For many years I frequently travelled from Padding-ton to Redruth so know the route extremely well, so I can tell you that your coverage from Taunton to Penzance is excellent. I lived on The Lizard for over 30 years hence my frequent rail journeys to and from London. Fortunately for me most of those journeys were in HSTs, often first class which had the WOW factor, unlike the present trains in which the first class is certainly not worth the huge premium. Only you lucky Scots can now experience that WOW first class factor. Enjoy it while you can! I follow all your videos, they are excellent. Many thanks and I am looking forward to more of them. I leave long distance travel to you these days as I am now 84 and stopped my train trips from Paddington to Redruth and vice versa three years ago. Very Best Wishes from Mike Sansom.

General rule of thumb for CrossCountry is that the closer you are to Birmingham, the more packed the train will be. I was on a 4-car Voyager between Birmingham and Exeter and the train was packed as far as Bristol (was lucky to get a seat), but then most people got off at Temple Meads so it was much quieter the rest of the way to Exeter.

It can be horrendously busy in parts, so much so on a few trips, there was standing in all carriages, you couldn't get to the toilets and people had to get off to let people leaving the train exit...but no one wanted to get off in case couldn't get back on! It was a safety hazard and many emails sent...no response (Virgin at the time). I now mostly travel to London and get the Rivera Sleeper from Paddington to Penzance...that's another story!
