I was 10 when she hit that night. That afternoon Mums ears popped like when u ascend in a plane. About 11 pm I watched our new sun louvers being ripped away one by one. It was like sitting behind a jet engine. We had to scream to be heard. Had a flagon of penfolds , rosary beads, a transistor radio. Well I suppose if your going to die may as well go on a healthy charge of red. I’ll never forget that shrieking sound of twisting metal as well as glass smashing. Mum piggybacked me downstairs during the eye (about 10 mins) I looked up at this round hole in the clouds… creepy…then 10 mins later on again. The next morning it was like trash and treasure, stuff everywhere. I went next door and helped the neighbours, dished out a few Christmas presents to their kids (wrapping paper a bit soggy). Soon after the hippies from Lameroo beach moved in next door…singing hippy songs banging their bongos around the campfire , I said “ hey mum these people aren’t wearing clothes”. Was quickly ushered inside …anyhow the cops all rocked up with a long line of paddy wagons and arrested them all. It was a great floor show. We sat around for a few days listening for our names to be called for evacuation. So…..sitting a quanta’s jet on a ladies lap it was like launch of a space shuttle, bit overloaded….arrived in Adelaide with nothing but the salvos were pretty good gave us a box for clothes…said fill er up… So it remains a ever present memory , even at 58. The warning siren at the start of this video still makes me cringe. A big shout out to Major General Stretton for mobilising the defence force massive clean up. Oh and of course…thanks to Gough Whitlam for interrupting his holiday , flying in to say a few well chosen words and off again to his holiday. Bloody politicians.

Casuarina, back when it was just Coles and K-Mart. Those Grollo homes make me think of Wulagi, that's where I grew up. Mum still lives in her Barclay house. The Darwin I grew up in was the rebuilt Darwin. I was born in 77. I'm *so* glad I wasn't here for Cyclone Tracy. Fuck that shit. 😱

Hi Michelle, just wondering, is that actual genuine audio of the night? I'm an admin of the CT survivors group, hence my question (and thanks for sharing your story, too).

Yes it is original recording. The ABC picked it up for a story years ago too.

Cyclones are unpredictable, my sister in law has experienced the eye of the Cyclone 3 times in Port Hedland but no loss of home.
