Speaking as an EMT, the information that you shared for providing information for EMS was spot on. Some additional helpful information when making a list of medications is a brief description of what the medication is for. This way when you give the list to an EMT or paramedic, they can see what the medication is for if you are taking an uncommon medication. Glad to hear that Dexter is doing better and hope he has a full and speedy recovery.

Best wishes to Dex for a quick recovery. I recently went through something like this when my Daughter had an epileptic episode while camping. One other tip I might offer.... Right after 911, I was in contact with the campground host giving them a heads up that an ambulance was coming, and direct them please to site xyz... That might be another number to get at check in for your whiteboard, is the host or entrance shack phone number. In my case, Park Rangers monitor the dispatch for police and emergency, and were at my RV before the paramedics. Love the Hanks crew, good times are ahead.

Also, thank you for your clear directions for calling 911. My husband and I are former paramedics and I am a retired 911 dispatcher. You NAILED all of the issues that callers have when they call. Glad to hear Dexter is doing well. As a vet, I would recommend, especially fulltimers, ensure you always have a copy of your pet's medical records with you. During an an emergency, your regular vet clinic may not be open (to get previous records and hsitory) and having that info handy is very helpful in trying to help diagnose and manage your pet's condition. Need to make sure you have actual copied of the medical noted, not just the invoices from previous visits.

Great information as a retired police officer and former 911 operator we found once people got accustomed to using their cellphone and no longer used house phones they don’t realize the ability to locate where they’re calling from went away. Glad to hear Dexter is doing well. As a retired veterinarian who is also a former owner of a 24 hr Veterinary Emergency and Referral Center, I would agree with your excellent recommendations on being prepared for an emergency with your pets. Emergency centers see pets owned by travelers on a regular basis during the spring and summer months. Knowing what facilities are available in the area you are traveling or understanding when you will be a long distance from an emergency center are simple yet important details to research before you reach your destination when traveling. Also having an up to date copy of the medical record for each pet including the medical history, vaccination history, past medical diagnosis, and list of current medications is key. Most pet owners are a little foggy on the details of their pets past medical history and it is helpful to have that information on hand. Simple things such as an accurate previous weight can be key in helping a veterinarian start the process of seeking a diagnosis for your pet. For dog owners, most trips to the emergency hospital can be avoided simply by keeping a dog under the control of a leash whenever you are in a new location, especially when there are other animals (domesticated or wild) in the area. A leash can prevent quarreling with other animals, prevent running into a busy street filled with moving cars, can prevent a dog from eating something toxic or bad for their digestive tract, or protect your dog from things like poisonous snakes, foxtails, skunks, toxic mushrooms, etc., etc. A 6 foot leash can prevent most of the above listed problems and many more which are things seen on a regular basis at most veterinary emergency hospitals across the country. Good advice for cat owners is to be very in tune with how much your cat is eating, drinking urinating and defecating. Really pay attention to food/water bowls and keep track of what you are scooping from the cat litter. Cats are very discrete when they become ill and most owners are unaware of a problem until they are de-compensating from that problem. Being cognizant of any changes (increases or decreases) in their eating, drinking, and voiding habits is an early sign that could signal they are having a problem with their health. Last advice is do not try to self-diagnosis your pet and especially do not give your pet medications of any kind without having your pet evaluated by a veterinarian. There are many common over-the-counter medications available for people that are given to pets by their owners not knowing what is safe for their pets. Simple over-the-counter aspirin is toxic to cats. Foods like chocolate or grapes can be toxic for dogs when consumed in large volumes. Some medications for one breed or species can be completely toxic and lethal for another breed/species. Avoid the temptation of using your "University of Google Veterinary Degree" to diagnose and treat your pet but rather leave it to a licensed and educated professional. It is tempting to cut corners when you are on the road, but take it from me, there is nothing worse than telling a pet owner they have inadvertently caused permanent organ failure in their own pet over administering something they thought would be helpful and safe. Even human medical professionals have made this error with their pets! Thanks for covering an important topic for both humans and their pets traveling on the road. Your RV advice if fantastic and well appreciated. Plus you two are delightful!

Another option IF you have cannot get to your phone and you DO HAVE a Chevrolet/GMC vehicle....if you have ONStar, hit that emergency button and the OnStar representative can call 911 and also know your exact location. Keeping Dexter in our thoughts. Fur kids cannot tell you what is wrong so it is always hard. We know. I work in a hospital and am a former LEO (law enforcement officer), if you can put your ICE numbers on the lock screens on your phones for First Responders since there are times that you do not have the ability to give them the unlock code and they can then just see it when the phone lock screen is on.

We had a medical emergency while camping when my DW fell off her bike and broke her arm. I googled for prompt care and we headed out in the truck. Unfortunately, the GPS guidance took us miles off in the wrong direction and I wasted a lot of time getting back to the road. Long story short, I called the office and had them guide me to them. The moral of the story is, do not rely on GPS, and plot the route with a map before you have a crisis.

As a lifelong first responder I will say that this should be a mandatory video for all RV'ers, you absolutely never know when tragedy will strike. Emergencies can happen to both young and old and let's not forget that many of our preferred destinations are off the beaten path so the quicker you can give your information to 911 the faster the response. Thanks Hanks!

Thanks for making this video. This Battalion Chief/EMT endorses everything you said - especially about being prepared to give the 911 call taker useful information on what's going on, and the patient's medical history, allergies and medications. We have a state park (with camping area) in our fire & EMS coverage area and we have a pretty good idea of the layout of the campsites. Telling us that you're in a tan Class A with black and red paint on the sides doesn't do us much good because half the RVs in the park are painted that way. "Site 32" is a much more useful piece of information. Also, if you're in a State or National Park and you let the Park Rangers know that you're having an emergency, they will generally send a Ranger to the main gate to guide us and lead us right to you. Glad Dexter is doing better. Keep it up Carl & Ney Ney!

It’s scary when your fur babies get sick when you’re full timing. We have two feline fur babies ourselves and have had to use vets in different areas. Thanks Hanks for a great informative video. I definitely will be better prepared for an emergency in the future. Also, thank God Dexter is recuperating. He reminds us of our Siamese named, Thomas T. Tomcat that we had years ago. We never had children so our cats and dogs WERE our children. We give all our pets middle names and buy them birthday presents as if they are our children. They become such an integral part of your family. We lost our last dog named Coco in Jan of 2021. She was 16 and we still miss her so much. Since we've been full-time RV'ers we haven't gotten another dog yet and I can't wait to adopt another one. Again great video. Love y'all.

We are in our 1st year of rv life and have been to the vet 4 times already for unexpected emergencies for our fur babies (they are all ok now). Praying for a full recovery and hope you can get some rest as well because it's very stressful when your fur babies aren't feeling well

So sorry about Dexter. Hope he will be ok. It’s our biggest fear with our pup Milo. When we arrive I look up a vet for him and the nearest hospital or clinic for us.

Prayers for you guys and Dexter! We had a scare with our 19 yr old girl kitty a few months ago while we were temporarily living in our RV. Turns out, she was just sleeping REALLY hard!! I went from crying, to laughing, to crying hysterically in a span of about 15 seconds!! As a mom, it IS super difficult when your kids have an emergency, but it's also hard with our fur babies because they can't tell you what's wrong and they're harder to read! Stay safe, and give Dexter hugs and kissed from the Wests!! =^._.^=

So sorry to hear about Dexter. We lost our going on 13 year old Weimaraner about a month ago. It's been an upside down world without Gunner. He was our 24/7 companion. We actually bought our modest RV just so he could travel with us. We had some great times on the road with him. Y'all stay safe and we'll be praying for Dexter. Love y'all.

🙏🙏🙏 For you all. I hope Dexter is back to his regular kitty shenanigans soon. I know how hard it is to deal with these fur baby emergencies, but I'm not out there on the road yet. I'm usually prepared with all of that medical info when I travel, but I've gotten lax with it lately. Thanks for the reminder. Thanks for the tips about ways to leave the RV safer when you're away for the day, and your pets too. Remember, despite how miserable the challenges of life may be when one is in the throes of them, the outcome of the experience may well be a blessing in the future. 💜

Great advice. We need to do better at making sure we know where the hospitals are at in the areas we are at. Now that we're traveling most of the time, we have a tendency to forget about this. Glad Dexter is doing OK. They are our children. Lynn and Danny

Our fur babies are our family. A medical emergency for family affects all. As a nurse you’re advise is spot on. Hopefully more people will be prepared because of this. Lifting y’all up for Dexter’s healing. Praying no relapse.

Hopefully Dexter makes a full recovery and it doesn’t happen again. If his “issue” happened from crystals, just make sure he always eats the special diet and wet food, but I’m sure the vet went over all that with you. Sorry, I’ve been in the vet field for +23 years, I can’t help but try to give advice. 🤦♀️🤷♀️

So very sorry that the Dexman and you both are going through this! Glad to see that the situation is improving. I want to thank you both for your courage and compassion for your KZitem family that you’d make a video at this tough time…and a really great, helpful video at that! We’re sending prayers for you and adding extra thoughts of catnip, play toys, and warm, soft blankets for little Dex-Mole!

Two months into full time RV’ing this summer I hit my head on the metal corner of our bedroom slide while home alone, split it open, had to get staples, and I’ve been recovering from a concussion for the past 6-8 weeks. I learned the hard way that our nearest ER was 30 min away! Luckily we’re in a full time RV park right now and one of our neighbors drove me! I’m so glad there were other people around. It was very traumatizing, but I’m bouncing back. Wishing Dexter a speedy recovery 🤍

I was afraid something happened when the upload didn't come before bed time! 😞Thanks SO MUCH for all this information, especially the fur baby related stuff. I'll have a dog, sometimes 2 when I get back in the RV. I designed all the electronics myself (I'm an engineer) and a remote temp monitoring system is something I'm installing, but the one you pointed to would get around any problems wifi might encounter. Safety for the fur babies is paramount! I'm so glad you guys were there for Dexter and caught it in time. Glad he's on the mend, that bit with him laying in bed talking to Nay Nay was priceless. You and he are in my thoughts and prayers - May Hecate continue to bless Dexter with her protection. I could see how hard that wore on you two. Hugs and love to you. It's a million times worse with a kid, but that bond and that love is so worth it. I think you guys will make great parents. Not to diminish the significance of the non-human members of our families; I've lost pets and will lose more as time wears on despite most of the time it is utterly devastating. It's worth it to share the bond and unconditional love a wee quadraped gives us. Even though those moments may be fleeting and tinged with pain, they are windows of joy we are cheating ourselves if we miss out on. Much love to you guys!

Sending up Kitty Prayer's for Sweet Dexter!🙏🙏🙏🙏 We know exactly what you're going through. If they could only make a collar that can translate "kitty speak" for us so they could tell us they aren't feeling well. It's so hard knowing they're not feeling great and not knowing exactly what's going on. Great Suggestion's for "White Board" necessities incase of an emergency. Helpful hints and how to do it are Grately Appreciated! Regarding traveling or "appearing" at shows or rallies it's always "Family First". Again, many Prayer's for Dexter for a Quck and Full Recovery and for his kitty Mom & Dad. Know that you have our full support and complete understanding.

I'm so sorry about Dexter's illness. You 2 are wonderful parents of him and I am sure you will be to children in the future. It is so heart-rending when any family member gets sick. 😢 My husband and I are retired. We never thought about cancer. 😢 My husband has been going through 1 chemo treatment or something since July 2020. So after the initial lockdown, we had our own self-imposed lockdown . We don't have any family members close by either. It has been so hard. We had been thinking about getting an RV, but put it off. Now we are at a point that he gets chemo every 28 days. We want to visit family safely. So guess what? !!!! We got an RV. My husband was counting down the days until we got it. Just like Christmas. 😊😊😊❤❤❤ We are looking forward to going somewhere after these next 3 days of chemo. He wants to camp in our yard first. Good idea. You two and your videos have been so helpful. With my husband's condition, we will definitely have our meds list, etc, with us. God bless you both. I am looking forward to seeing more of Canada. Do you ever go to Michigan?
