Trooper's Summary:
Dispatch came across the air advised Ingham County was chasing a vehicle into Livingston County for UDAA, Aggravated Assault with a knife, B&E, and possibly intoxicated. The vehicle was a silver KIA with MI Reg DRE 8313 and was driven by an Andre Brown. I headed WB on I-96 to position myself to assist along with multiple Livingston County S.O. units. Ingham county advised they lost sight of the vehicle and were terminating their pursuit.
A few minutes later 4719 Sgt. Vorhies picked up the vehicle travelling EB on I-96 near Burkhart Rd. I was sitting in the turnaround just west of the rest area and I observed the vehicle travelling EB on I-96 and 4719 behind him. I pulled out activated my lights and started to slow roll on the shoulder EB. The vehicle then slammed on its brakes and cut through the turn around. I backed up and engaged the pursuit as the second patrol car behind 4719. We were Travelling WB on I-96 when the car suddenly ramped on exit 133 and 4719 was out of position to follow and missed the exit. I became primary in the pursuit and the vehicle headed SB on Burkhart Rd and got right back on EB-96. The pursuit continued EB on I-96 and the vehicle was making several moves as if he were going to exit on ramps and then swerving back onto I-96 EB. When the pursuit got to Grand River at the Brighton Exit the vehicle took the ramp down into the city of Brighton and I was not in position to follow him, and I continued EB on 96 and the Sheriff’s cars went with him down the ramp. The vehicle went through the Light and came back up onto EB I-96. I was now the second patrol car in the pursuit behind Deputy Boyer and I was calling the pursuit. We continued EB on 96 and we started to slow in the pursuit and slowly box the vehicle in and push it to the shoulder. The vehicle came to rest, and the driver bailed from the car and ran into the woods. Deputy Kletza and I chased the driver up into the woods hollering stop police. The driver was caught and arrested without incident.
The driver was walked out of the woods and placed into a Livingston County Patrol car with a cage. I read the driver his Miranda warning rights, and he advised he wanted to talk to a Lawyer. He was then given his PBT rights on scene due to the odor of intoxicants coming from him. He refused the PBT. The driver was transported to the Livingston County where he was read his chemical test rights and he refused at first then agreed to take the breath test. Results of the breath test were .04% & .04%. The driver was lodged in the Livingston County Jail for poss. of stolen vehicle, fleeing & eluding, R&O, and DWLS.
