There's a cathedral school right next to Canterbury Cathedral called The King's School. They seem to wear magenta gowns as part of their uniform. It is said to be the oldest continuously operating school in the world. Founded in 597. (Keith Richards is rumoured to have been the very first pupil there). 😂

Hi Dara happy new year I guess the church was locked because it was bell ringing practice night , it happens every week here where I live If you want to see different building materials, try Warwickshire it’s famous for its red brick work, each area of the UK will use whatever is available locally One of my favourite coastal towns is Tenby in south Wales , have you done Caernarfon and the Snowdon area of North Wales yet . Wales has loads of Castles it really is a beautiful country. Try the M50 from Tewksbury to Newport , you will drive through Monmouth another great place to visit also the Big Pit is not far from Monmouth , you can actually go down into the pit to see how miners worked and the conditions they had to endure 👍👍

Bell ringing practice is probably what was going on! Thanks for explaining that! I was wondering... I do want to go on a pit tour... we missed that at Beamish and I was SO disappointed! I know there are some good ones in Wales. I've been to Caernarfon back in 1985 (when I was at uni and had my first British trip... fell in love with Wales and the castles!). I went again with Ian and our sons when they were young. But I need to go back again now that I have this KZitem channel. We LOVE Tenby! It has special family connections for Ian. 22:00 the bells are stored in the Down position for safety. Before a full "peal" they need to be wound up into the Up position. Then the Peal involves ringing each bell in turn, swapping the order one by one, like weaving, until they return to the original order. It's a uniquely English thing.

On this trip, since it was July and quite warm, I decided we would mostly avoid coastal towns. Not sure how you can beat Arundel. Free car park? Well thats definitely how every video on KZitem should start in my opinion! Love the thatched houses and rooftops figurines. A lot of our properties have that tile work from the Church. I always presumed it was 1960s, could be Victorian given the age of the buildings but they were all converted to apartments in the 60s 🧐 maybe they retained the original tiles? Such care over the gardens. Only one tea room? Good job it’s great. Wow, another impressive looking castle. Stunning Chapel. Sussex has it all, this really is a super fast tour! Royal Albert cups and saucers no less! Nice looking scone. The birds are drawn to Ian, or is it his tasty scone? Nice win the badgers! Such a quaint place! A magenta otter place in Alfriston. At the end of Ypres is the Menin Gate and is a memorial to those lost in the battles whose graves were unknown, approximately 54,000. Every evening at 20:00 the citizens perform the Last Post. @@MagentaOtterTravelsin WWI, the British soldiers sent there to fight, found it hard to pronounce the town name of Ypres (said as Eep ers) and renamed it as Wipers 🙂. A battalion of soldiers found a bashed up abandoned printing press in a shelled part of the town of Ypres and a couple of the soldiers in charge got it working and set about printing a satirical and typically dark British humour newspaper, calling it the Wipers Times. It did bring a bit of light relief for those that were able to read it. If you are interested you can search for it using Google and see and read parts of the newspapers that were “saved” and are part of the War History museum. I also believe that a TV Film was produced, telling the story about The Wipers Times. When I was at senior school (a very long time ago now, sadly! 🥺😢) the “set book” as part of my O’ Level English Literature was Journey’s End by R C Sherriff - it is a character driven play set around the time of WWI and about the experiences of the soldiers and officers in the trenches etc. As a school pupil and Learning about what actually happened during WWI was an ‘education’ I have never truly forgotten and it was then that I was taught about “Wipers” myself.

I'm sure we missed loads of things! We seemed like we were going a million places... there are many more videos upcoming in this series... but still so many things we missed. Hopefully we can explore the area some more this summer!

Yet another great video Dara (as usual 😀) - you should get payment from Visit England for these recent videos! Oh, and congrats on 10,000 subscribers. That was pretty quick compared to the first 5k - onwards to 100k. Please like the videos people, it helps to get Dara's content out to more viewers.

Still can't believe you went to Alfriston - and didn't carry on through the village to the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs, one of the 'seven sisters' being Beachy Head! You mentioned the stone in Amberley looking very different to the Cotswolds: The stone of the buildings as you travel from, say, Southampton on a line through to Margate on the north east tip of Kent changes continually - get into Kent and you'll see a much lighter grey (or gray for our colonial chums!) called Kentish Rag Stone. Herstmonceaux - I photographed a wedding there about 30 years ago! It was open to the public and a wedding venue then - must have been just before it was gifted to the Canadian Uni. The observatory is there because it lays on the zero meridian (like Greenwich). Rye - I have many, many happy memories of Rye going back to before I started school (and that's a lonnnnnng time ago!) It's far more contemporary than when I was a kid (1960s/70s) and it's much more arty than I remember, but it's managed to keep it's heritage front and centre. Ypres - is pronounced 'Eeeprs' (with a very soft 'r') It's a town in Belgium which has a famous memorial arch to WW1. Actually, it's a pity you got to Rye so late in the day - it's surprisingly bustling for a small town tucked away at the end of the road on the coast. And I know what you mean about the church bells ringing at 8pm! We've experienced that a couple of times and it does kinda get on your nerves ... after the third day on the trot!

That is one thing I really love about the UK, the changes in architectural vernacular, often based on what's available, that you can see traveling a very short distance. Unfortunately, from the 20th century on that seems to have been lost. If you see a modern development in the UK, it's very unusual to see anything that distinguishes it from something in a different part of the country. Herstmonceaux - what an excellent place to take wedding photos. I walked through the woods on the grounds and it's such a peaceful and lovely setting. It would have been nice to make it to the Seven Sisters but I made a conscious choice on this trip to mostly avoid the coast because I figured it would be crowded at this time of year (July) and I knew we wouldn't have time to hit a lot of things. We will need to do a second trip that does take in the coast and all the other places we missed.

Sorry, we missed a lot even though we felt like we were seeing a million things! I did try to at least film the chalk cliffs as Ian was driving by them at quite a speed... but there were barricades in the way and I didn't get the shot! Ugh! I do love seeing how the stone changes in ALL the areas we travel to in the UK. Each area has it's own unique look... South Wales, Northumberland, I could go on and on... and like you say, the Weald. How fun that you photographed a wedding at Herstmonceaux! I was thinking it would be an AMAZING wedding venue! I was glad we were in Rye late in the day because I loved the quiet streets in golden hour ;-) And I LOVED that dinner! Thanks for coming along with us on our Kent and Sussex road trip! I really appreciated your comment. Cheers! XX Dara

I'll start with THE most important question. Did you buy the hat?? 👒 I would say Pecaan. Another name for gooseberry is goosegog. Who is there a Scottish saltire under the Alfriston sign and what happened on the 1sr of May 2000? I see the owners of the Star Inn support Newcastle United. Slates are natural. They came from Wales mostly. Tiles are baked in a kiln. Tiles reduced the demand for slates so the Welsh quarries closed. (Cheaper) The definition of Tye is '1. (in mining) a trough used to separate valuable material from dross.' Although in this case it seems to be the clergy house or perhaps the village green. The Oracle isn't clear about this. I read that Dennis Healy, former chancellor of the exchequer, is buried in St. Andrew's Church, Alfriston. I note that they've put the bell ropes far out of your reach Dara. A Smugglers Song. 🎵Five and twenty ponies, Trotting through the dark - Brandy for the Parson, 'Baccy for the Clerk. Them that asks no questions isn't told a lie - Watch the wall my darling while the Gentlemen go by ! (The 'Gentlemen' were NOT gentlemen). It's a real pain changing the sundials to account for British Summer Time. 😠 The Battle of Hasting wasn't fought in Hastings at all. It was fought in, you guessed it, Battle. There has been recent archelogy that has pinned down the exact spot. The railway to Hastings is called the 1066 Line. I see The Fig calls its letterbox a mailbox. Perhaps the owners are American or Mexican? The church bells ringing at that time of evening probably means England is being invaded (by tourists).

No of course I didn't buy the hat! I never buy anything! #minimalism I was curious about the Scottish flag on the Alfriston as well... no idea what happened 1 May 2000. I should research better! Seemed like the Tye was the village green? Yes, it was a good thing I couldn't reach those ropes! haha I suspect there are a lot of incorrect sundials for 6 months of the year. But maybe the sun doesn't shine much then so it's a non issue? That roundabout was in Battle... so I guess the sculpture was appropriate!

@@MagentaOtterTravels No it’s inland on the A27 I assumed you passed it driving from Lancing to Alfriston. It’s an old market town and county town of East Sussex, it’s where the massive bonfire parade is held each year. It’s architecturally unspoilt, a sort of much bigger Alfriston or Arundel. Some of the buildings are interesting, looking like brick but actually medieval timber framed that have had brick slips put on to make them look brick built. It was a cheap way for a Georgian owner to update their house style. Quite a quirky Town.

@@MagentaOtterTravels Go to Lewes. It's lovely (and hilly)! Apart from the famous Guy Fawkes Bonfire it's a centre for (classical) guitar making. Antique shops aplenty too. (Mind you, for some reason I tend to aim for the John Harvey Tavern when I'm there - it's essentially the tap room for Harvey's brewery)
