in this video, I share why sustainability is important to me, and hopefully provide a comprehensive answer to why I believe our roles as consumers matter in sustainability. our personal impact may not look like much in comparison to the impact of large scale corporations- this video is my case for putting in the effort regardless!! I believe we need to have a more empathetic approach to sustainability. if we don't change, we are only reinforcing the unsustainable nature of our capitalist society, allowing corporations to continuously exploit the Earth, people, and animals- all because we are fortifying the demand for things we consume mindlessly. to me, sustainability goes much farther than just reducing the rate of climate change or preserving the Earth- it's about doing what we can to prevent disparities in health and overall quality of life for those that are disproportionally affected by the effects of climate change, pollution from animal agriculture, or work in unethical conditions so we can consume cheap goods. if you know, you know... (if not, omg, please watch this video!!) everything is connected!! the planet, it's inhabitants, public health, animal welfare, everything! in this video I also talk about systemic and multifaceted issues within the food and fashion industries. I would like to restate I do not know it all and I am continuously learning more. I just wanted to share because personal sustainability is something that is very important to me, and youtube played a large role in me getting into sustainability in the first place! my interest in fashion as a teen led me to watch the True Cost documentary, which led to an interest in slow fashion, minimalism, low-waste living, veganism, environmental racism, and other system-based issues. i've done a lot of research over the years and just wanted to share what I know. this has been a very gradual process, but education is key! I truly think if more people had access to or sought out this information, more people would care more and make more efforts! of course, everyone has limitations, but I will always advocate for doing what we can within our means. :) I hope this video can be an honest resource that can either inspire you to make more sustainable choices or help you make more informed decisions in the future. hope you are all staying safe and healthy, wishing you all the best!! love, Erika

I'm so happy that you made this video! I've started to get into the whole sustainability/low waste/slow fashion lifestyle back in 2016, but in the middle of transitioning into this lifestyle, I felt disenchanted because I felt like many of the low waste influencers I was following was constantly trying to get me to buy things that I simply could not afford. I started to feel this unnecessary pressure to buy new things, like buying new stainless steel containers, instead of reusing the plastic reusable containers that I had already have, and I felt guilty for making mistakes and not living out the "perfect" sustainable lifestyle. I also had a hard time dealing with the idea of eradicating plastic completely from my life because the tradeoff was that I couldn't support many of the local businesses and restaurants that I frequently go to in my local Chinatown - they still often pre-wrap their goods/foods in plastic. That is why, I really enjoy your take on sustainability - to simply try your best and to live more simply. I think sometimes when we're just living our day-to-day lives, and scrolling mindlessly through social media, we can forget why we care about living this lifestyle in the first place. I am not going to lie I still use many things made from plastic and purchase takeout, especially now, since many small businesses are struggling, but you remind me to keep trying to live more sustainably as much as I can. I also like how you're so kind to people who are just starting out and understanding to people who might not have access to information that they need or support from their friends and families, or any other factors that might inhibit them from starting out. Keep up the good work :-)

yes yes you bring up so many great points!! I think the zero-waste movement that was very trendy a few years back did wonders for making personal waste an issue we all felt like we had some control over, but it seriously demonized plastic, something that is so unavoidable for most people!! obviously it would be best to avoid it, but it inevitably will come into our lives at some point and in these cases it is much better to be reusing the resources you have instead of buying new sexy reusable containers. also love that you mentioned supporting your small, locally-owned businesses in a time where they may be struggling! this is so important! investing in your own community instead of national companies should also be a pillar of sustainability. thank you so much for watching and bringing up these important points!!

I think you did a great job in sharing your thoughts about sustainability respectfully, Erika! Sometimes it sets people off about sustainability is how pushy some people can be, as much as they had the best interest at heart it can be off putting.

Great video! I’m currently transitioning into a plant based diet but I thought it was very interesting when you mentioned prioritising food waste over eating meat/dairy products because that’s something that I’ve been thinking about too!

yay!! and i'm so glad this is something you've been thinking about bc honestly it wasn't something I thought of much until my friend asked me! it's so easy to get wrapped up in the statistic that veganism is the most sustainable diet. though overall it may be, I think they don't consider food waste in part of this equation! thanks for watching :)
