Can You Ride 250cc Motorcycle on the Freeway, Highway, OR Interstate?
As safe as any other motorcycle properly ridden on any highway. In the United States the Federal law limits minimum displacement on the national highways to 150 cc and a comment that the vehicle should be able to meet the posted speed limit.
Correspondingly, how many cc do you need to go on the highway?
So the general rule is: NO M/cycles 50 cc or less on ANY freeway. On some freeways, probably where there is a high density of traffic, there may be a further restriction on that stretch of the freeway that prohibits any M/cycles that have a higher engine capacity too like 125 cc.
Also, do you need a speedometer on a motorcycle in California? I've read through the CA vehicle code regarding motorcycles a couple of times. You do NOT need a speedometer. The vehicle code does not even contain the word speedometer anywhere in it.
In California, any scooter with 150cc of displacement or more is legally classified as a “motorcycle” and all motorcycles are freeway legal (see California vehicle code section 400).
