The power network is facing a huge change moving from centralized and large generation stations to smaller distributed energy resources plants (DER). The main challenge now is to keep the stability of the network, which can be monitored through the frequency and therefore it is a focus to test the frequency functions in compliance with the IEC 60255-181:2019.
The relay protection in DERs, like wind and PV plants, uses rather basic protection functions but there are other challenges to look out for when it comes to testing, i.e. self-powered relays and compliance with the frequency standard.
