FIRE RESPONSE: On Thursday afternoon, Spokane Valley Fire was dispatched to the 1300 block of S. Lakeside Rd. in Liberty Lake for a vehicle fire. When crews arrived they found a fully involved SUV fire spreading to the motorhome it was being pulled behind and nearby wooded area next to the road.
Thanks to the quick efforts by SVFD Firefighters in Engine 3, they were able to knock down the intense fire and keep it from running up the hillside.
Unfortunately both vehicles were lost, but thankfully there were no injuries reported.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) vehicle fires are actually 4.5 times more deadly than residential fires. In 2023 there, there were 3,593 vehicle fires reported, resulting in 13 fatalities and more than 167 million dollars in content and property loss.
Here are a few things you can do in case of a vehicle fire:
- Quickly and safely pull the vehicle to the side of the road.
- Turn off the engine.
- Have all passengers safely exit the vehicle.
- Find a safe location to regroup at least 100 feet away from the vehicle.
- Call 911.
- Do not return to the vehicle.
